Biden Touts Northeast’s Climate Progress — They Now Face Energy Shortages Every Winter

  • President Biden boasted about replacing fossil fuel plants in New England with renewable energy sources in his speech on Wednesday, despite the fact that the region’s grid is becoming destabilized.
  • “Unfortunately, the stability of the grid will pay the ultimate price for these choices,” Meredith Angwin, author of Shorting the Grid: The Hidden Fragility of Our Electric Grid, said of Biden’s proposals.
  • “If people in New England want expensive and part-time energy they’ll love Biden’s new plans,” Institute For Energy Research Senior Vice President Dan Kish told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

President Joe Biden touted New England’s transition away from fossil fuel plants to renewable in his speech on Wednesday. However, the region routinely experiences energy shortages as renewable energy alternatives like offshore wind fail the grid during the region’s severe winters, experts told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The president praised New England as a new hub of “clean energy construction” while criticizing the pollution of fossil fuels during his speech at Brayton Point, a decommissioned coal plant in Somerset, Massachusetts.

” Today, Brayton is one of the frontiers — on the frontier of clean energy in America. On this site, they’ll manufacture 248 miles of high-tech, heavy-duty cables,” said Biden, referring to the specialized, subsea cables that tie offshore wind farms to electrical grids.

“The plant, like many others around the country, had another legacy: one of toxins, smog, greenhouse gas emissions, the kind of pollution that contributed to the climate emergency we now face today,” Biden said of the former coal plant.

However, New England’s grid is routinely taxed during the winter months when energy consumption is at its highest, thanks in large part to the region’s reliance on wind energy, experts told the DCNF. (RELATED: How Climate Alarmists are Screwing the World and Achieving Nothing)

“Biden did not acknowledge that wind turbines only work when the wind is blowing, and therefore, they do not supply the steady power that the coal plant supplies,” said Meredith Angwin, author of “Shorting the Grid: The Hidden Fragility of Our Electric Grid,” told the DCNF.

“The only sure thing is that more and more steadily operating plants are shut down, and more and more intermittent plants are built,” Angwin said.

Instead of relying on fossil fuels, Biden argued that New England should embrace green energy to electrify the region so as to not contribute to the “climate crisis.”

“Unfortunately, the stability of the grid will pay the ultimate price for these choices,” Angwin said of Biden’s policies.

“It annoys me that our President seems to think that the plants of ten years ago were just as polluting as they were sixty years ago,” she stated, pointing out that effective pollution control devices, costing more than $500 million, were added to the coal plant in the lengthy time between Biden’s childhood and today.

Although Angwin promoted nuclear power as an alternative to coal, nuclear power is declining in New England. The Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, a nuclear plant in Plymouth, was shut down in 2019, leaving the region with only two nuclear power facilities, according to information provided by the EIA.

“Unfortunately, the same people who hate coal also hate nuclear, even though nuclear makes steady power without greenhouse gases,” Angwin stated.

With an over-reliance on renewables combined with a lack of nuclear power, insufficient gas pipelines and only Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to make up the difference, New England is one severe winter away from an energy catastrophe, according to OilPrice.

“The Massachusetts LNG terminal is the only one that in recent years has been importing LNG from Russia,” IER Senior Vice President Dan Kish told theDCNF.

“If people in New England want expensive and part-time energy they’ll love Biden’s new plans,” Kish stated. “People should remember that Europe’s energy crisis began before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine when their offshore windmills ran out of wind.”

New England is only a few hundred miles from the Appalachian Basin, an area that would be the third-largest natural gas producer in the world in 2021 if it were independent, according to the EIA.

Environmental activist groups helped block natural gas infrastructure in New England, arguing that gas shortages are made irrelevant by “clean energy” sources from offshore wind farms that keep prices down and meet winter demand.

Natural gas and nuclear power generated roughly 78% of the 8,258-gigawatt hours of electricity generated within New England in December 2021, according to data from IER.

In the summer, when energy usage is low in comparison to winter, electricity forecasts from the EIA predict a 15% increase in electricity prices in New England this summer versus last summer as well as a 9% increase in residential electricity expenditures, according to EIA data.

ISO NE, New England’s grid operator, and the White House did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

  1. It’s beyond believable that Biden is still pushing a “climate emergency” after Germany’s (and Europe’s) “Green New Deal” is not only responsible for their crashing economy but, along with U.S. policy, responsible for the Ukraine war. After decades of shutting down their nuclear and coal fired plants Germany (and most of Europe) gets at least 40% of its gas and oil from Russia and can’t survive without it. Nord Stream 1 ran from Russia through Ukraine to supply Germany (and all of Europe) with Russian gas and oil. It was problematic for Putin because he had to pay huge tariffs to Ukraine and more problematic as the U.S. kept pushing Ukraine to join NATO; a “red line” for Putin as it could have threatened the oil supply line and Russia’s main source of revenue. So then he built Nord Stream 2 which runs directly to Germany from Russia. Trump opposed it and Biden approved it. Trump even warned Germany about their dependence on Russian oil and they ignored him. Putin “owned” Europe with its gas and oil dependence, he saw Biden’s debacle in Afghanistan, witnessed his foreign policy ineptness and fecklessness; so it’s really no surprise he decided to attack.

So while Biden says his sanctions will bankrupt Putin, the truth is that Germany and all of Europe are still buying Russian gas and oil, the Russian ruble is rising, the dollar is crashing and Putin (with Biden’s help) has castrated NATO. Gas prices and inflation will continue to rise and because of the lack of Russian fertilizer, worldwide food shortages are possible. Not to mention that Ukraine and Russia are major world grain suppliers. There is also a new refugee crisis in Europe, hundreds of thousands will die, western economies are crashing and we are in a proxy war with Russia that we didn’t vote on, can’t afford, and can’t win. Had enough yet America??
