Russian President Vladimir Putin is apparently not too thrilled that Finland has applied for NATO membership and that Sweden is expected to do so soon.
Just after Finland announced its application to NATO, Russia sent seven nuclear-capable Iskander (SS-26) ballistic missile systems within 26 miles of the Finnish border. The missiles have a range of 300 miles and can carry either conventional or nuclear warheads.
The Kremlin issued a chilling warning that plans for both Finland and Sweden to sign up to the Atlantic alliance were a ‘grave mistake with far reaching consequences’.
Russian deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov, said: ‘They should have no illusions that we will simply put up with it,’ and insisted ‘the general level of military tension will rise’.
