TARGETED? Gun Owner Robbed After Newspaper Publishes Address

Journal News mapIn late December 2012, the Journal News published names and addresses of legal gun owners in 2 New York counties. The paper obtained the list via a Freedom of Information request (FOIA), compiled the data and published an article entitled, ‘The Gun Owner Next Door’ complete with interactive maps in the online version of the piece. Gun owners immediately voiced their concerns saying that publishing such a list unfairly infringes on their privacy and gives criminals a literal road map of homes to attack and which to avoid.

The gun owners may have been correct.

Police are investigating a burglary in White Plains, NY in which the victim’s legally owned weapons may have been the target. The home was on the Journal News gun map.

One lawmaker is outraged by the event and is blaming the paper for the burglary.

State Senator Greg Ball released a harshly worded statement as news of the crime surfaced over the weekend.

“The Journal News has placed the lives of these folks at risk by creating a virtual shopping list for criminals and nut jobs. If the connection is proven, this is further proof that these maps are not only an invasion of privacy, but they present a clear and present danger to law-abiding, private citizens. Former convicts have already testified to the usefulness of the asinine Journal News ‘gun maps’ yet the reckless editors are evidently willing to roll the dice, gambling with the lives of innocent local homeowners.”

The 72 year old victim of the burglary was not home at the time of the robbery and the accused were unable to open the gun safe. One person is in custody.

  1. So … how do we know that these were going for the guns? How we we know that they went “straight for” the safe? Does the house have video cameras? Are we do believe that they didn’t look ANYWHERE else in the house? That’s odd – the map didn’t say who had safes and who didn’t, or where to look for them.

Basically, all we know is that a house that was mentioned in a story was later robbed.

They have taken one person into custody, but so far it’s still speculation – here’s betting it’s unrelated.

    1. Hey Techno,
Anytime some idiot puts your address in a newspaper and basically spells out that there are guns or no guns at that address, some opportunist is gonna take advantage of the situation.
That paper needs to be taken to court by every one who’s address was listed and make them pay for their indiscretion.

    2. HEY CAN WE LIST YOUR ADDRESS AND YOU BELOGING IN THE NEWSPAPER? BET YOU WOULDN’T APPROVE OF THAT. SOME PEOPLE JUST DON’T GET IT. I HAVE A GUN AND HAVE FOR MANY YEARS, AND IT HASN’T KILLED A SINGLE PERSON. NOW I’VE MISPELLED QUITE A FEW WORDS WHEN I WOULD BE WRITING. IS THAT THE PENS FAULT? JUST SAYING/.

    3. Those are both quite fair points. I don’t think anyone wants to have that sort of attention focused on them.

But that doesn’t mean it had anything to do with the burglary. Look around and you’ll find that the pro-gun reporting of this incident has also been quite slanted, leaving out some details that would tend to suggest that this was just another burglary with no particular interest in guns.

  2. What’s the problem? I thought these were the safest homes in these counties.

They must not be Homes of the Brave.
