Political Correctness Wins as Cleveland Indians Do Away With Chief Wahoo

Last summer’s Supreme Court ruling which decided that “offensive” trademarks were protected free speech would have seemed to lead to an end to the madness of the left’s war on team mascots and nicknames.

While the Washington Redskins were victorious against the cultural cleansers who had brought in the feds to force the team to change its name, fascism never sleeps and the left’s crusade to erase all that offends their delicate sensitivities rages on.

On Monday, the latest scalp was peeled off and will hang on the left’s trophy wall as the Cleveland Indians announced that they were doing away with the iconic Chief Wahoo insignia on their uniforms beginning in 2019.

Let’s hear a big war whoop for intolerance!

According to the Associated Press “Indians removing Chief Wahoo logo from game uniforms in 2019”:

Divisive and hotly debated, the Chief Wahoo logo is being removed from the Cleveland Indians’ uniform next year.

The polarizing mascot is coming off the team’s jersey sleeves and caps starting in the 2019 season, a move that will end Chief Wahoo’s presence on the field but may not completely silence those who deem it racist.

The Associated Press was informed of the decision before an official announcement was planned for Monday by Major League Baseball.

After lengthy discussions between team owner Paul Dolan and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, the Indians are taking the extraordinary step of shelving the big-toothed, smiling, red-faced caricature, which has been used in used in various expressions by the team since 1947.

However, the American League team will continue to wear the Wahoo logo on its uniform sleeves and caps in 2018, and the club will still sell merchandise featuring the mascot in Northeast Ohio. The team must maintain a retail presence so that MLB and the Indians can keep ownership of the trademark.

“Major League Baseball is committed to building a culture of diversity and inclusion throughout the game,” Manfred said in a statement. “Over the past year, we encouraged dialogue with the Indians organization about the club’s use of the Chief Wahoo logo. During our constructive conversations, Paul Dolan made clear that there are fans who have a longstanding attachment to the logo and its place in the history of the team.

“Nonetheless, the club ultimately agreed with my position that the logo is no longer appropriate for on-field use in Major League Baseball, and I appreciate Mr. Dolan’s acknowledgement that removing it from the on-field uniform by the start of the 2019 season is the right course.”

The beloved mascot has adorned team uniforms and merchandise for 70 years but like the Confederate statues has only become the focus of intensified cultural bullying in recent years.

Chief Wahoo has always had detractors and critics but hadn’t fallen into the category of items to be erased from history prior to the rise of the totalitarian left which is a force that all Americans who value their liberty had better pay attention to while there is still time.

Cleveland is scheduled to host the MLB All-Star game in 2019 so there was probably a good amount of extortion and arm-twisting going on behind the scenes.

And you thought that baseball was actually immune to the sort of racial grievance politics that have ruined the NFL.

Better get your Chief Wahoo merchandise while you still can before it ends up being banned as a hate symbol.
