“Go F*** Yourself”: Ukrainian Soldiers’ Courageous But Fatal Refusal to Surrender
Facing certain death, thirteen soldiers in Ukraine’s border guard took a defiant stand against an incoming Russian warship in the Black Sea during the initial Russian attacks Thursday. Rather than surrender a crucial outpost in the highly trafficked and strategically important body of water, one radio operator declined to oblige the Russians and told them off in no uncertain terms.
In an unverified video first released by a Ukrainian media outlet and later allegedly substantiated by the Interior Minister, both visual and audio show and describe the interaction between the two sides.

Breitbart transcribed the conversation:
“I am a Russian warship. I offer to lay down our arms and surrender to avoid bloodshed and unjustified casualties. Otherwise, you will be bombed,” the Russian warship reportedly said twice in the audio.
The radio operator then allegedly replied: “Russian warship, go fuck yourself!”
It was later reported that the thirteen soldiers were among over 100 army deaths on the first day of fighting against the Russian invasion. Again as reported by Breitbart:
“On the first day of fighting amid the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin’s Russia, 13 Ukrainian border guards died after being shelled by a Russian warship as they attempted to defend the island in the Black Sea. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that all 13 border guards lost their lives defending the island after the Russian warship fired upon them.”
These thirteen specifically were quickly posthumously awarded Heroes of Ukraine, the nation’s highest honor by President Volodymyr Zelensky. In a speech, he said:
“Defending it to the last, all the border guards died heroically. But did not give up. All of them will be awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine posthumously. Eternal memory to those who gave their lives for Ukraine.”
Now, it’s certainly possible that this is war-time propaganda, but it’s also quite believable that Ukrainians are ready to stand up to the outsized influence of their eastern bully. These, and the hundreds of other soldiers, are willing to put their lives on the line.
Notably, Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko, whose name might be more recognizable as the former world heavyweight boxing champion, announced he would be ready to fight and that he would take up arms to withstand the Russian assault. He said that what is occurring might be a senseless war, but he didn’t have another choice other than to defend his country.
Likewise, President Zelensky has adorned military attire, complete with a vest and helmet, as he engages on the front lines with his soldiers.

And, seen as dictatorial by some, President Zelensky has announced that males between the ages of 18-60 must remain in Ukraine. He has also distributed automatic rifles to thousands of regular citizens in a show of force against invading Russian forces.
It all seems to be working. As of this writing, Zelensky declared that most Russian advances had been stopped. Additionally, Breitbart reported:
“Despite the heavy losses, the Ukrainians have touted that they successfully pushed back against the invasion by Russia, claiming over 1,000 Russian soldiers killed. Russia has not made specific casualty claims in return, but a spokesman discussing the battle to claim Antonov airport asserted “There is no loss in the Russian Armed Forces.”
