I wrote recently about the high-profile interviews conducted by George Stephanopoulos of ABC News. Two things may be overstatements in that sentence. That they are interviews and that ABC has a news division. Stephanopoulos recently spent time with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Again, these two sessions were not interviews as there were no questions asked that were meant to uncover information. These sessions were staged and choreographed campaign ads to recover any favorable impressions of the Executive Team. They did not work.
This week, Stephanopoulos and ABC turned their efforts into another recovery effort. George sat down with Alec Baldwin to delve into the shooting incident on the set of the movie Rust, which resulted in the cinema producer’s death. The event was surreal, with dark lighting, haunting music, and Baldwin’s command performance. There was no such performance from Stephanopoulos. He asked no difficult questions, and the whole charade was scripted
An example of questions that were not asked was when Baldwin claimed he did not pull the trigger, which resulted in the fatal shot. The apparent follow-up was, “well Alec, you were holding the gun when it was fired. If you did not pull the trigger, who did?”. Not asked, not answered. I cannot assume why Stephanopoulos is taking part in these events other than he has been a Democrat operative since his days in the Clinton White House. He works as a journalist for one of the Big 3 networks but has never hidden his bias. The shame is that ABC has been complicit with him.
Alec Baldwin has gone from PTSD a few weeks ago to an absence of guilt today. He held the gun that shot the round that killed one and injured another, but he has absolved himself. He acknowledges that someone is guilty of taking a life, but it was not him. This statement must be just as his lawyers told him to say it. If you believe Baldwin, the gun will be charged and on trial soon for the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. It will be quite a made for tv event watching the prosecutor question a revolver sitting on the stand.
At one point in the conversation, I cannot call it an interview, Baldwin explained how he could never hold a gun pointing at someone, let alone have his finger on the trigger. He said that was not how he was trained. Apparently, his training stopped just before the class where you are taught to check whether the gun is loaded. He said he did point the gun because he was directed to by Hutchins. He did as directed, the gun went off, and she was dead.
Which Alec Baldwin are we to believe? The one who was seen doubled over after the incident and told us he had PTSD from the trauma of shooting and killing Hutchins? Or the one who now says he has no feelings of guilt and hopes we can discover the person responsible? Neither is believable. We need to rely on the facts and the testimony of those who witnessed the tragic shooting. Their reaction to his one-act play on ABC has not been favorable to Baldwin, and I don’t think the jury will be either.
As for ABC and Stephanopoulos, they have to stop this series of dramatic one-person performances unless they plan on a weekly series. They can call it the Biden Team and Friends Redevelopment Project. It will be a short-lived series if they keep failing as they did with the first three episodes.
