Trump’s Lasting Impression on the Republican Party and Its Future

Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said Wednesday that it would be a grave error to try to “erase” former President Donald Trump from the Republican Party because of the support he still enjoys within it.

Admittedly, there are a lot of figures on the Right, especially within Congress and the talking heads on TV, who are desperate to be rid of Trump’s reach and influence on the party. These individuals or those better known as having Trump Derangement Syndrome, view him as a pariah and a hindrance as they want to return to business as usual. Their logic is the country got that out of their system and look where it got us?! You saw a lot of this on the airwaves yesterday in the positively giddy proclamations about Joe Biden’s inauguration speech.

Even Fox News’ Chris Wallace began fawning over his speech immediately saying after that, “I’ve been listening to these inaugural addresses since 1961, John F. Kennedy…I thought this was the best inaugural address I ever heard.”

Wallace went on to say that, “Joe Biden was saying that democracy prevailed, we were able to get through that, and he was talking about how we need to get through that in the future if we are going to be a united country.” These people always value flowery language over actual action.

However, this is a knee-jerk reaction to a shortsighted analysis considering Biden has been President for all of 5 minutes. You can’t just erase Trump going forward because that ignores the very real party transformation that happened in his presidential term. Lindsey Graham seems to understand this in his own way.

Lindsey Graham: ‘If You’re Wanting To Erase Donald Trump From The [Republican] Party, You’re Going To Get Erased’ https://t.co/rXd5osgXLA

“I hope people in our party understand the party itself. If you’re wanting to erase Donald Trump from the party, you’re going to get erased,” Graham told Fox News just hours after the inauguration Wednesday of President Joe Biden.

“Most Republicans like his policies. A lot of Republicans like his style,” Graham continued. “A lot of people are disappointed with him personally at times but appreciate the outcomes he’s achieved for our country.”

The senior senator from South Carolina ushers the listener to an inconvenient truth for the Never-Trumpers. It’s not just that voters like Trump’s policies, but they also like his style! It is worth noting that President Donald Trump actually grew the Republican party!

Donald Trump has increased his share of the minority vote four years after defeating Hillary Clinton at the 2016 presidential election, exit poll data shows. According to surveys conducted by Edison Research and published by The New York Times, Trump has boosted his share of the Black vote by 4 percentage points since 2016, when just 8 percent of Black voters supported him.

Moreover, he saw his backing among Hispanic and Latino voters jump by 4 points over his first term, with 32 percent telling exit pollsters they backed Trump on Tuesday compared to the 28 percent who said so in 2016.

Admittedly, there are ways to modify and make that combative style more effective and useful. That’s always been true and had Trump listened to just a little advice on that front, he may have won by a large enough margin to ensure he got a second term. There’s always room for improvement with any politician.

But the overall truth remains. GOP voters do not want a return to the status quo. That is a given! They don’t want floating approvals of Joe Biden from Mitt Romney, and they most definitely don’t want Liz Cheney voting for impeachment based on the ridiculous notion that supposition stands in for evidence of actual wrongdoing. What Trump voters what is a party that will fight for their values, policies desires, and doesn’t give when it’s time to push back and actually have a backbone.

The reason Trump exploded onto the scene in the first place was that Republicans simply failed on that front and the 8 years under Barack Obama were absolutely horrible.

Graham went on to lament the idea of Trump and his supporters starting a new party. Many would likely agree with that. Some go as far as to say that it would be self-defeating and ensure Democratic control into eternity. However, Jared will be sharing more on the benefits of a third party tomorrow.

What Republicans need to understand is the ball is actually in our court. You don’t want a Trump-esque party being started? Then Congress needs to actually do what the voters sent them to Washington to do! Full stop! These elected officials must stop being so enamored with the beltway lifestyle and remember the people in their states and districts. If they don’t go to work every day remembering how they got there and who put them there then they immediately deserve to be primaried!

Does Trump still exist? You betcha! Just because he’s not starting his second term doesn’t mean he has been expelled into oblivion never to be heard from again. Trump? Not be heard? Riiiight.

Republicans can handle that situation well, or they can burn their party to the ground out of their own stubbornness. The choice is theirs.

The Legacy of President Trump

The memory of President Trump is something that our country will be debating for quite some time. To the Left, he will always be the worst President ever. To many on the Right, he is their new hero and a true warrior for freedom.
