Fruits and Veggies

Apples are ideal for older dogs or dogs that have a slower metabolism. They are a great source of vitamin C, vitamin A, and fiber. Cut them up into small cubes or pieces. Be sure to remove seeds and the core of the apple as these can be dangerous for your dog to consume.

If you are looking for something that helps support heart health and kidney functions, bananas are the way to go. Bananas as you know, contain high potassium. They also have fiber, folate, and vitamins. The only downside to this delicious snack is that it is higher in sugar content. Sugar in large amounts can be harmful to your dog, never feed them the peel or more than half of a banana. Small slices in moderation are the advised method of serving.

Another tasty treat your dog can consume is blueberries. This small fruit has a large number of antioxidants. This fruit has anti-inflammatory properties, and they also help to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Watermelon is the ideal treat for any sunny day. Not only is it hydrating, but there are also traces of vitamin B-6 and potassium. Careful when feeding watermelon to your dog, make sure there are no seeds in the pieces you give them. Also, under no circumstances can dogs eat the watermelon rind and skin, this can make them very sick.

Strawberries are nutritious fruit that is also safe in moderation for your dogs. Strawberries are the only fruit to carry and wear their seeds on their outer skin. Like blueberries, strawberries contain antioxidants. They also have fiber and vitamin C used to strengthen the immune system. Believe it or not, carrots are a food that is good in moderation as well. Like humans, carrots are beneficial to the eyes and improve vision. Carrots can substitute as a temporary toothbrush by removing built-up plaque and freshening breath.

Green beans have high fiber, calcium, and vitamin K, they are on the lower end of the calorie scale. Fresh green beans are the better option, but your pup can enjoy them in any form. Green beans are beneficial in promoting healthy and strong growing bones.

Proteins

Everyone loves bread, so it’s not surprising that our dogs would too. Bread in moderation is okay for dogs. Only give your dog plain bread, not any with seeds, raisins, or spices of any kind. However, too much bread can lead to obesity due to a large number of carbohydrates. Homemade bread is better than store-bought.

Yogurt is also okay as long as it is plain. Added flavors mean added sugars, which is an unhealthy option for dogs. However, some dogs may have a difficult time digesting dairies, making them dairy intolerant. If you notice that your dog starts to become constipated or gassy after eating yogurt or another dairy product, it is best to not give any at all.

Sweet like honey, we bet your dog is too! Honey is higher in sugar so a little goes a long way. It contains vitamins A, B, C, D, E, and K. Along with nutrients like magnesium, copper, calcium, potassium, and antioxidants. You can see why it would be a pleasant treat for them.

Cashews make a quick and easy snack as long as they are unsalted. This nut contains calcium, protein, magnesium, and different antioxidants. Cashews are high in fat, so it’s best to only give your dogs a few at a time.

Peanut butter is famously known as a treat for your dog. It contains healthy fats, niacin, and vitamins B and E. If you are going to give them peanut butter, check the label to make sure it doesn’t contain xylitol. Xylitol is toxic to dogs. Now if dogs can have peanut butter, can dogs eat almond butter? While regular peanuts and cashews are safe for dogs to eat, almonds themselves are not. Almonds can cause a struggle in the digestive system. However, almond butter is safe to give in small quantities.
