Lawsuits Against President Donald Trump Begin

Lawsuits against former President Donald Trump have begun. A Democrat in Congress has sued Trump for inciting riots at the US Capitol and names Trump and Rudy Giuliani along with groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. This is just the first of many lawsuits that are expected against the former President in the coming days.

According to The Associated Press, the federal lawsuit was filed by Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson (MI), who is the chairman of the Homeland Security Committee. The lawsuit is seeking punitive and compensatory damages.

The New York Times reports that the NAACP is the filing organization on behalf of Bennie Thompson. The lawsuit alleges that those named violated the 1871 Ku Klux Klan Act.

The case filed against Trump is a civil case, which means there is no criminal liability and no requirement for proof of a criminal act. The case is simply one to argue that Trump harmed Thompson in some way through his actions and the court could order Trump to pay the damages.

Some congressional Republicans openly promoted this approach, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. He said that Trump could be held liable in civil court for his actions on January 6.

As has been previously reported, Trump made comments that many other Democrats, including Joe Biden, have said in their past. The Democrats argue that Trump incited a riot while their comments did not. Trump asked multiple times for peace in Washington DC, but those comments have been largely ignored and silenced by the mainstream media after social media outlets banned Trump from their platforms.

It is expected that Trump will respond to the lawsuits at some point, most likely with countersuits of his own. Trump has never been one to shy away from a lawsuit.
