What is the Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” policy on immigration

The Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” policy on illegal immigration is being blamed by American media outlets for the separation of children from adults, but is it the policy or the willingness of foreign nationals to ignore U.S. law?

The policy states unequivocally that if someone enters the United States illegally they will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Once charged, those persons will be incarcerated while awaiting trial. That’s exactly the same way we handle citizens who break the law so why would it be different for foreign nationals?

The media focuses on the fact that children cannot be placed in the same area as suspected criminals. Why would anyone want to put any kid in that situation? If an American decides to break a law that requires jail time, their kids are going to be separated from them. That’s how it works. That’s how it has always worked.

The media also incorrectly labels those crossing the border illegally as “asylum-seekers”. But if I wanted asylum in a foreign country, I wouldn’t first sneak into the country then, only if caught, apply for it. I would go to an embassy in a neutral country or claim asylum at a legal port of entry into that nation. That’s how it’s done and it’s the same for those seeking asylum in the United States. Go to any port of entry and declare that you are seeking asylum. Your family will not be broken up and you won’t be charged with anything because you haven’t broken any laws. If your asylum claim is good and true, a judge will award you and your children that status. If not, you will be sent home – together.

If instead, someone wishes to enter the U.S. for temporary work, there’s a visa for that. 165,741 H2-A guestworker visas were issued in 2016, a number that has increased steadily since 2011. As enforcement efforts stem the tide of illegal aliens taking these jobs, the number of H2-A visas allowing legal visitation to the United States for the purpose of work will likely increase. If they want to become U.S. citizens, there’s a process for that too.

Immigrants who want to enter the U.S. lawfully, and protect any minors with them, will enter at a port of entry. Those who choose to skirt U.S. law risk arrest, trial, incarceration and separation from any minors that travelled with them. Children will not be allowed to stay with them as other criminals are also incarcerated in the adult facility. They will be housed in a separate area specifically for children with personnel and facilities to meet children’s needs.

The lack of honest reporting on the child separation issue shows the activist nature of American media. They almost all have a globalist, open borders agenda and seek to negate U.S. law where it fits their ideological bent.
