Charlotte, NC — On Monday, Democrats will look to introduce articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. The House could vote as early as Tuesday to impeach the President according to sources. It would be the second time that the House has taken such action against President Donald Trump.
The Democrats in the House would have no issue passing the articles of impeachment. They hold the majority and there are many Republicans that have indicated that they may support such measures. It would make President Donald Trump the only President in history to be impeached by the House twice.
The interesting part is that the House may delay sending those articles to the Senate until after the first 100 days of Joe Biden’s presidency. Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has shared procedures for a potential second impeachment trial in the Senate. He shared that the trial would not begin before Joe Biden takes office, meaning that President Donald Trump would no longer be at risk of being kicked out of office.
Democrats still insist that they want to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate for a trial and conviction. The reason? To prevent a future President Donald Trump.
Article I Section 3 of the Constitution outlines that if a President is impeached, there are two possible punishments by the Senate. The Senate can vote to remove that person from office or to prevent them from holding any future office. In other words, Congress is taking action to prevent President Donald Trump from running for President in 2024, an idea that many have said he is considering.
Democrats will have control of the Senate when the measure is taken up, which they believe will help support their cause. There are also several Republicans in the Senate that have said they support the impeachment measures against President Donald Trump.
Democrats would need two-thirds support for the impeachment measure to pass, or 67 votes. This vote will not need the tiebreaking vote of Kamala Harris, so it fully depends on Republican Senators and what they will do against President Donald Trump.
Republican Sens. Ben Sasse (NE), Lisa Murkowski (AK), and Pat Toomey (PA) have indicated that they support impeachment measures. Others that may vote for conviction would be Sens. Susan Collins (ME), Mitt Romney (UT), Richard Burr (NC), Thom Tillis (NC), and Mitch McConnell (KY). Joni Ernst (IA), Lindsey Graham (SC), and Rob Portman (OH) are also worth watching given some of their recent statements.
It could be an uphill battle for Democrats to get enough votes to convict President Donald Trump in the Senate. Convincing 17 Republicans to go against President Donald Trump and his supporters would be a feat. Especially given that several of these Senators are considered 2024 candidates and would want to have the support of Trump supporters in their bid.
If the Democrats fail in their bid to convict Trump in the Senate, it sets the stage for another run for President Donald Trump if he so desired. Many Republicans are already calling on Trump not to run in 2024, blaming him for the chaos around the Capitol and for losses in Georgia.
