California Democrats introduced a reparations package on Wednesday, becoming the first state in the nation to do so following a task force’s recommendations, according to Politico.
Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom created the California Reparations Task Force in 2020 to look into whether those who experienced alleged harms of racism should receive compensation. After the task force submitted a lengthy report to state lawmakers, the California Legislative Black Caucus introduced 14 measures related to civil rights, education and criminal justice reform aimed at “dismantling the legacy of slavery and systemic racism,” according to Politico.
“While many only associate direct cash payments with reparations, the true meaning of the word, to repair, involves much more,” state Rep. Lori Wilson, chair of the Legislative Black Caucus, told Politico. “We need a comprehensive approach to dismantling the legacy of slavery and systemic racism.”
Notably not in the slate of legislation is direct payments to descendants of slaves, according to the outlet. However, one proposal seeks to “restore property taken during raced-based uses of eminent domain to its original owners or provide another effective remedy where appropriate, such as restitution or compensation.”
One measure would seek a constitutional amendment to enable state funding for “increasing the life expectancy of, improving educational outcomes for, or lifting out of poverty specific groups based on race, color, ethnicity, national origin, or marginalized genders, sexes, or sexual orientations.”
This proposal could face a challenge in court following the Supreme Court’s June ruling that ended race-based admissions, according to Politico.
Another proposal sought to safeguard hairstyles that are “natural and protective” in competitive sports, according to Politico. The governor and state legislature would be required to issue an apology for any role California played in alleged crimes or human rights violations against slaves or their descendants.
Other blue states have created similar reparations task forces, including New York, Colorado and Massachusetts, but none have introduced subsequent legislation, according to Politico.
Wilson did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

The lie of “systemic racism” is insidious because there is no racism embedded in our institutions. In fact, all the opposite with dozens of Federal laws dating back sixty years making it illegal to discriminate against anyone on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. But yet the term abounds in the media, in politics and in all our colleges and institutions of higher learning as if it were fact.
Because of this and other constant propaganda, blacks believe that Republicans are racist and the police are killing blacks when, in fact, there are more whites than blacks killed by police every year. It doesn’t help that (because of 60 years of Democratic welfare monetizing single parent families) the number of black children born out of wedlock is now over 75%! That coupled with an increasingly barely literate (because of Democratic controlled Teachers unions) failing schools in most of our major cities equals a largely under educated, morally deprived population that is easily manipulated. And don’t bother to call me a racist because every single psychological and sociological study ever done says that children from single parent homes are more likely to drop out of school, do drugs, join gangs, commit crimes and end up in prison. That is by far the biggest threat for blacks in America and only a few like Jason and Candice Owens and Tim Scott dare to discuss it. There is no “systemic racism” but there is a systemic plan by Democrats to keep blacks in the “Democratic Plantation”. The idiotic idea of “reparations” is just another Democrat pandering scheme that will never happen but certainly garners votes for the ignorant part of the populace that always wants more “free stuff”.
When will all other races start wanting to receive reparations (freebies plus dollars) for the biases against them because of the color of their skin? What a crazy way to make a living. It’ll be easier to find a job and make themselves useful.
