Democrat Lockdown and Crash the Economy Strategy Could Backfire

We all know the game the political Democrats are playing. If we (Democrats) can get Trump’s record-breaking economy to crash, we can defeat Trump. This was exemplified by Bill Mahr‘s now-famous remarks on his TV show “Real Time with Bill Maher,” where he wished this very event on the American people. Why anyone would wish this is rather despicable – but this is another issue.

Then the Coronavirus “pandemic” hits. The Coronavirus has been a godsend for Democrats. It has done exactly what Bill Mahr was hoping for – it has crashed the economy. Not surprising when you consider that everyone is/was on lockdown for several months. Most honest debaters understand that the Coronavirus is not Trump’s fault. Rather, the focus of Democratic attacks is on Trump’s response to it. Democrats know that many people will have short memories and forget this point – focusing on their pocketbook on the day they enter the voting booth.

Let’s not even get into whether the numbers are correct or whether media have been honest reporters on the Trump Coronvirus response. In the vein of “never letting a good crisis go to waste,” made famous by Rahm Emanuel, the Democrats have seized upon the politics of Coronavirus. Let’s be honest about the politics that go something like this:

  • Democrats – want the pandemic lockdowns to continue as long as possible to extract as much economic pain as possible on the electorate. They argue for safety, disregarding any balanced, rational risk management approaches. To achieve this, Democrats are trying to put as many roadblocks up as possible to reopen America and extract as much pain as possible via draconian Coronavirus lockdown measures.
  • Republicans – want the economy back as soon as possible to restore Trump’s good economic record. They cite the overblown hysteria of Democrats and media. Primarily trying to achieve this, Republicans do deep-dive analysis to show this Coronavirus hysteria and with lockdown protests to reopen America.

This sets up an epic battle for the upcoming elections this fall. Will this Democratic lockdown the economy strategy work? Or will it backfire?

Democrats are jumping for joy about the Coronavirus economic malaise. Nasty Democratic strategist and MSNBC contributor James Carville predicted that President Donald Trump “will get his fat ass beat” in the 2020 election to the presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden, he said to John Melendez on The Stuttering John Podcast. The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll still has Trump in a good position – same as Obama at this time in the election time cycle. Though national polls may favor Biden, key battleground Electoral College states polls show Trump and Biden within the margin of error of a tie – assuming you believe polls. They can often be fickle, as seen in the 2016 presidential election.

Democrats may be overplaying their hand – something they often do. If the electorate believes that Democrats have unduly applied a heavy hand in the lockdown, voters may extract a heavy penalty against the Democrats and vote “the bums” out. Voters may rightly feel that if you vote in Democrats, you may find that they may continue this lockdown mentality even after the election. This may include rolling lockdowns for the next flu season, even more draconian lockdown measures, leading to an even worse economic situation.

Anecdotally we could be seeing the start of a trend. Democrats of the Staunton, Virginia, city council were ousted by Republicans on Tuesday despite receiving more votes than they did four years ago. Republican candidates Mark Robertson, Amy Darby, and Steve Claffey all joined incumbent Andrea Oakes in a four-seat GOP sweep, WHSV reported. The three incoming council members replaced Democratic incumbents Erik Curren, Ophie Kier, and James Harrington all almost doubled their vote totals from 2016, yet still lost. Graham cited gun control legislation in the state as well as COVID-19 lockdowns as key turnout drivers for Republicans. Local outlet Augusta Free Press reporter Chris Graham called the results “stunning almost beyond words.

Another example of Republicans ousting Democrats was in California. Republican Mike Garcia flipped the congressional seat in California’s 25th district – defeating Democrat Christy Smith. This is the first time in more than 20 years that the GOP has flipped a California district from blue to red. Still another was in Wisconsin. In Wisconsin, Republican Tom Tiffany easily beat Democrat Tricia Zunker by 15 points for the seat vacated by Rep. Sean Duffy (R-WI). “Tom Tiffany beat his Democrat rival BIG in Wisconsin,” Trump wrote. “Two great Congressional WINS!”

In short, many of these Democratic lockdowns are backfiring. Republicans are now energized and must keep the pressure on and support organizations to fight back against Democrats. There are many organizations (here is one, check them out – Open The States) all across the nation doing just this, protesting to reopen America.
