Formula 1 Cancels Russian Grand Prix over War in Ukraine

Formula 1 announced Friday that it would not be holding the Russian Grand Prix this year.

“It is impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances,” the organization said in a statement. “We are watching the developments in Ukraine with sadness and shock.”

The race was scheduled to take place on September 25, 2022 in Sochi and the 2023 race was set to happen outside of St. Petersburg, where Putin was born.

Several racers, including world champion Sebastian Vettel, had said that they would boycott the race in protest against Russia if the race were not canceled.

F1 decided to cancel the race after meeting with FIA and the race teams. The decision comes just hours after UEFA, the European football organization, confirmed that has moved this season’s Champions League final from St. Petersburg, Russia, to Paris, France.
