The funding request adds that the whistleblower “took a great personal risk” and urges Americans to “have the whistleblower’s back.” The complaint has sparked the House of Representatives to launch a formal impeachment inquiry into Trump, and there is controversy over whether the whistleblower should be allowed to testify in front of the committee anonymously. Trump has said he wants the identity of the whistleblower.
“Let’s be clear–what’s happening is outrageous. The law is clear–whistleblowers must be permitted to speak to Members of Congress anonymously. Lawful disclosures are a basic element of oversight and republican governance,” it reads.
A letter from the whistleblower’s attorneys, available online, conveys “serious concerns” that their client’s personal safety is in danger. It requests that leaders in both political parties “speak out in favor of whistleblower protection.”
The whistleblower has raised around $183,000 at the time of publication. The goal, according to the page, is to raise $250,000. Additional money will go to “other brave whistleblowers” that “stand up to executive overreach.”
