The Final Republican Debate of 2015

Republican debatein Colorado

The final Republican debate was held in Las Vegas. This time the debaters were John Kasich, Rand Paul, Carly Fiorina, Jeb Bush, Donald Trump, Marco Rubio, Ben Carson and New Jersey governor Chris Christie.

I thought this debate was the best of the last few debates as everyone came across very substantive and in great detail of their plans which, made it harder to choose a candidate. There was less nit picking and attacking of other candidates and all seemed to stick to the issues.

Moderated by Hugh Hewitt and Dana Bash they asked the candidates direct and fair questions which centered around  ISIS, national security and immigration. Most of the candidates agreed that Obama was a failure and his policies have weakened America and that Hilary must be defeated.

A good deal of the debate seemed to center around Rand Paul and a disagreement on immigration and what to do about ISIS between Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz. Both made solid points and both canceled the other out. Cruz and Rubio both agreed that radical Islam is the most deadliest enemy we are facing today and that ISIS must be destroyed. Cruz was for a mass carpet bombing of ISIS sights while Rubio was for boots on the ground, but they should be Arab boots while we give them air support. Cruz said right now Obama is only doing about 50 sorties a day and we should be doing 1100 a day.

Another rift came between Trump and Bush. Bush called Trump unhinged and a chaos candidate and not a serious candidate to which Trump replied, ”That’s why I’m at 34% and you’re only at 3. If you keep talking the way you are you’ll be off the board.” 😀

One thing I like about Trump is he is no push over like so many politicians. You say something negative to him and he pushes back.

At one time the moderators asked Trump to comment on his shutting down the internet for ISIS members. Trump explained you can do it by cutting off their access to the internet. “Right now ISIS is recruiting young people here and in other countries through the internet and you have to shut it down.”

“As far as the internet is concerned: I’m not talking about closing the internet,” Trump responded.

“I’m talking about parts of Syria, parts of Iraq, where ISIS is. Spotting it. Now, you could close it,” he continued. “What I like even better than that is getting our smartest and getting our best to infiltrate their internet. So that we know exactly where they’re going, exactly where they’re going to be. I like that better!”

The audience then erupted into cheers and applause with some loud booing mixed in. Trump was puzzled.

He then lectured his hecklers.

“I just can’t imagine somebody booing,” Trump reflected. “These are people that want to kill us, folks. And you’re objecting to us infiltrating their conversations? I don’t think so. I don’t think so.”

That was followed by a resounding applause.

A highlight of the debate was when Hugh Hewitt asked Donald if he still planned to run as a third party  candidate if not elected thus paving the way for a Hillary presidency. Trump responded that he is not and is a firm republican now. He also reiterated that comment with Chris Cuomo after the debate saying he’s met a lot of people and is sticking with the republican party and not going third party.

Carly Fiorina made some good comments about technology has moved on and so have the terrorists with it which makes us have to be more vigilant. She stated that Hilary and Obama were responsible for the growth of ISIS. She is absolutely right there. Obama created ISIS as a tool to fight Assad in Syria and it grew out of that plan to become the No.1 terror force in the world. Chris Christy called Obama a feckless weakling and said a Hillary presidency would follow Obama’s policies and we need to take back the surveillance tools Obama took away from us, ”Everyone is scared today,” Christie said.

Rand Paul was against increased surveillance and called Rubio weak on immigration saying he was for open borders.

Ben Carson was for more surveillance and was for monitoring the mosques. “We need to get rid of this PC stuff,” Carson said. Carson cited ISIS and the Muslim Brotherhood is taking advantage of our PC attitude.

Overall this was a great and fund debate but as we’ve seen in all past debates especially with Obama, what they say now is one thing and what they do after they get in office is quite another.
