College Rescinds Invitation For Border Patrol Because They Can ‘Cause Undue Distress’
A California college with a large immigration population rescinded U.S. Custom and Border Protection’s (CBP) invite to a Monday job fair because the organization can “cause undue distress.”
San Jose City College (SJCC) made the move following protests from the city’s Dump Trump activist organization, NBC News reported Tuesday. The group encouraged others to demand the college to ban Border Patrol from appearing at the career fair and other events.
“We serve a very diverse student population, a large percentage of whom have immigrated to the US from other nations and an even larger percentage of our students have family members who are immigrants,” Acting SJCC President Elizabeth Pratt said to the campus community over email Monday. “For many in this population, the presence of US Customs and Border Protection representatives on campus—regardless of their intentions or reasons for being there—can cause undue distress and concern.”
Pratt added she was confident with her decision, according to the email given to The Daily Caller News Foundation said.
CBP respects the college’s decision, but added that the purpose of the appearance was “to inform about the excellent, well-paid rewarding career opportunities CBP has to offer, not to conduct any law enforcement activities,” NBC reported.
“SJCC is not discouraging students from becoming border patrol agents,” the school’s Public Information Officer Ryan Brown said to TheDCNF over email Wednesday.
