Congress Considered To Have Lowest Ethics Of All Professions

Members of Congress are considered the least honest and ethical of professions including telemarketers and car salespeople, according to a Gallup survey released Thursday.

Fifty-eight percent of people said they had low or very low faith in the honesty and ethics of members of Congress, according to the survey. Only 44 percent of people surveyed said the same about car salespeople, and 56 percent said the same about telemarketers.

Nurses came out on top of the survey, with 84 percent of people saying they would rate the honesty and ethical standards of nurses as high or very high. Nurses’ high ratings were followed by physicians, pharmacists and high school teachers.

Members’ of Congress poor honesty and ethics ratings have hovered around 60 percent disapproval since 2016. But that’s better than in 2013, when 66 percent of respondents gave them poor ratings.

Only 8 percent of people said they would rate members of Congress as having high or very high honesty and ethical standards in 2018. Thirty-three percent of respondents ranked members of Congress as having “average” honesty and ethical standards.

Several scandals may have contributed to the poor reputation of members of Congress in 2018. They include Republican New York Rep. Chris Collins, who was indicted on insider trading charges in August, and Republican California Rep. Duncan Hunter, who says he’s not guilty of allegations he misused roughly $250,000 in campaign funds.

Both Collins and Hunter won re-election in the 2018 midterm elections. Hunter will face trial in September 2019 after he and his wife Margaret Hunter were indicted in August, according to Roll Call.

Other professions examined by the Gallup survey include journalists, law enforcement officers and clergy.

Respondents were evenly split about whether they trusted journalists more or less than the average profession — 33 percent said they had high honesty, 31 percent rated them as average and 34 percent said they had low honesty.

Police officers were in the top five highest-rated professions, earning confidence from 54 percent of people.

Fifteen percent of people surveyed rated clergy as having low honesty and ethics, and their positive ratings have been falling since 2012 after taking dips in certain years because of scandals.

  1. Profession? That says it all. Congress was never meant to be a profession!!! So that’s the problem. Who was it – Franklin? – who said never let lawyers control politics!

I am opposed to term limits because; A) we already have term limits at the ballot box and; B) term limits won’t fix Voter Fraud and rigged elections!. This also requires a Constitutional Amendment and we already have over a dozen BAD amendments that have CONTRIBUTED to the problem in the FRST place!

It will be much better with less risk to take back our voting system, return it to a PAPER PROCESS with more assured accountability and educate the voters than to put more loopholes into our Constitution. You may think term limits will be a faster solution but I guarantee you that would be no fix at all!

Term limits create a lame-duck legislator EVERY TIME!

The reason we have bad legislators is because We the People are STUPID!! We have been taught crap instead of truth for generations. We have been content and LAZY! We have been materialistic and self absorbed! Now we get what we deserve!
