House With a Clock, Simple Favor and Nun take top spots at U.S. box office

This weekend’s box office winners feature a dark comedy, mystery thriller and a supernatural horror flick, according to comScore’s estimates.

“Warner Bros.’ horror hit ‘The Nun’ scares up another $45.65 million at the global box office for a worldwide total to date of nearly $300 million,” comScore’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian said. “Notably, Jack Black in Universal’s ‘The House With A Clock In Its Walls’ opened this weekend at number one in North America with $26.85 million and in just 22 territories for a global total of $35.58 million.”

Clock did well at the box office despite a mediocre critics rating and not so great audience score. Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer rang in at 68% as 86 of their critics found it “fresh” while 41 found it “rotten. Movie-goers gave it an average rating of 3.3 out of a possible 5 points.

A Simple Favor wowed at the box office. Fans and critics alike loved this mystery thriller as the movie received an 84% on the Tomatometer of critics scores and a 4 out 5 rating by fans.

The Nun was not received well by critics or moviegoers but managed third place this weekend.
