MSNBC Guest Blames ‘Assault Weapons’ For Law Enforcement’s Failures In Uvalde

A guest on MSNBC claimed on Sunday that the failure to pass a ban on certain semi-automatic firearms explains why police in Uvalde, Texas failed to immediately stop the mass shooting.

“We shouldn’t be surprised at what we saw in Uvalde, because we do not have an assault weapons ban in this country, and we need one,” Rina Shah, a senior advisor for Republican Women for Progress told MSNBC host Al Sharpton on “PoliticsNation.”

“The very fact that these weapons are out there, I think has scared law enforcement, because they have to deal in such a way that is demanding of them in the way that they are not trained for, and they are personally and mentally not ready for it,” Shah said.

Sharpton also decried the failure to pass a ban on certain semi-automatic firearms.

The mass shooter killed 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School before Border Patrol agents stormed the classroom and fatally shot him.

President Joe Biden signed bipartisan legislation that provided funding for “red flag” laws, enhanced background checks for young adults and closed what gun-control advocates call the “boyfriend loophole,’ which previously allowed people convicted of domestic abuse to own firearms, last month.

A report issued by an investigative committee of the Texas House of Representatives highlighted “systemic failures and egregiously poor decision making” by the Uvalde school district and law enforcement agencies.
