The White House Flip Side, March 3, 2018

While we catch the most important stories coming from the White House as they happen, some minor stories and small details fall through the cracks on busy news days. When they do, we pick them up … on the flip side.

Presidential Itinerary – the details

The president’s summarized daily schedules can be found HERE.

Golf

The president went to the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach Saturday morning wearing a white golf shirt and his iconic red ball cap. White House Press Office staff did not answer questions as to who he was with or if he played golf, although the 3 hours that Trump spent at the course is enough time for a capable group familiar with the course to finish 18 holes. The trip from Mar-a-Lago to the course was less than 15 minutes and neither supporters nor protestors were spotted along the route.

The weather at the golf club was a sunny 70 degrees with a 14 mph wind from the north.

On the return trip to Mar-a-Lago small groups of Trump supporters were seen along the route. No protesters were visible.

Suicide at the White House

Just after President Trump returned to Mar-a-Lago, U.S. Secret Service personnel responded to reports of a person who suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound near the White House. The president is aware of the incident and has been briefed, according to White House Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gridley.

Getting out of Dodge

The ride from Mar-a-Lago back to Palm Beach International Airport was uneventful. The usual gatherings of supporters and protesters carrying signs including “Best President in U.S. History.”

The president and first lady boarded Air Force One through the normal mid-deck entrance. The president was wearing a navy blue suit.

Home again

The winds were still blowing at Joint Base Andrews, but not so heavy as to force a Dulles landing. After Air Force One taxied, then president and first lady exited the plane from the lower deck built-in staircase due to high winds. The first couple walked the 50-yard distance to Marine One for their short trip back to the White House.

After landing on the South Lawn of the White House, the president spent a few minutes talking with the pilot of Marine One. He and the first lady then walked towards the residence but did not respond to shouted questions from the press about the tariffs, Hope Hicks’ departure, or anything else.

Going to the Gridiron

In the evening, the president will attend the Gridiron dinner, an event where politicians and the press roast each other with parodies, satire and song. The event is closed press except for print media so video is likely not to happen, but we may get some press accounts of the zingers, singers and stingers from the event.

According to the Gridiron event program, the president’s table (from left to right) includes White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the Chief of the National Guard Bureau,  the Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, Kristin Roberts,  the Secretary of the Air Force, Ivanka Trump, the Secretary of Transportation, the Secretary of HHS, Cheryl Landrieu, Secretary of the Treasury, Sen. Tom Cotton, Kevin McClatchy, First Lady Melania Trump, President Donald Trump, Gridiron Club and Foundation Pres. David Lightman, Mrs. Robin Lightman, Vice President Mike Pence, Mrs. Pence, Craig Forman, Mayor Mitch Landrieu, The Attorney General, Mrs. Anna Cotton, The Secretary of Commerce, The Secretary of Labor, The Secretary of Veterans Affairs, The Secretary of Homeland Security, Jared Kushner, The Chief of Staff of the United States Army, and the Administrator of the EPA.

The press room, out of view of the president, initially had a full bar but someone, wisely, decided to remove the alcohol … darnit.

The president spoke for about 34 minutes at the Gridiron event in which he made self-effacing jokes that referenced his family/advisors, the recent White House departures, North Korea and the potential for his own impeachment.

The president quipped that he was late to the event because “Jared couldn’t get through security” and that V.P. Mike Pence begins every day asking him if he’s been impeached yet. He also said that CNN recently lost it’s best reporter – Steve Bannon.

Trump also said that the tariffs he recently announced are meant to help dying industries, but that he felt it was probably too late to save the media.
