Watch: Trump signs Interdict Act to halt the flow of deadly drugs into the country

President Donald Trump signed the Interdict Act into law Wednesday evening which will aid law enforcement in efforts to stop the flow of opioids into the United States.

“This law directs the Department of Homeland Security to provide additional tools and resources to detect and intercept the supply of illicit Fentanyl,” the president told reporters. “In 2016, nearly 20,000 Americans died as a result of using synthetic opioids such as Fentanyl.”

Trump shared stories of wrecked families and lost loved ones due to the flood of opioids into the country. The drugs are primarily sourced from China, but other countries export the dangerous drugs to American ports.

Vice President Mike Pence thanked the president and members of Congress for their leadership and quick action in the fight against the opioid epidemic.

“Last year you declared a public health emergency regarding opioid abuse and addiction,” the vice president said. “I just want to take the opportunity to, along with you [Trump], to commend these members of Congress for acting swiftly, and in a bi-partisan way to provide new resources to interdict the flow of Fentanyl into the country.”

The president issued one comment just before signing the bill that left pundits and analysts alike wondering just what it meant.

“It feels like a giant step but, unfortunately, it’s not going to be a giant step. ” Trump said of the new law. “There is an answer. I think I actually know the answer. But, I’m not sure the country’s ready for it yet.”

What exactly the country isn’t ready for is … a mystery. The answer couldn’t be simply making opioids completely illegal – cocaine, heroin, meth and other narcotics are already completely illegal and that hasn’t been “the answer.”

The White House did not clarify the president’s comments in time for the publication of this article, but the story will be updated if the press office offers any guidance.
