Betsy DeVos Confirmed as Education Secretary
BY ALEX PAUL
Earlier today, Betsy DeVos was confirmed by the Senate to be Trump’s Education Secretary in an incredibly close vote; 50-50, to be exact, with Vice President Pence providing the tie-breaking vote that approved her.
For the most part, Mrs. DeVos is an optimal pick for Education Secretary, given her history in groups such as the Foundation for Excellence in Education, the Alliance for School Choice and Action Institute and the All Children Matter PAC. However, the one portion of her beliefs that can cause some skepticism is her support for Common Core standards, which have been known to lower the quality of education children receive.
Like most other things occurring in this presidential cycle, we have no choice but to wait and see how things play out before praising or denouncing her, considering her mildly-questionable ideals.
Fun fact: I’ve graded Mrs. DeVos in the past, alongside 13 other nominees picked by the Trump administration–the article can be found here.
