Kevin McCarthy Says We Must ‘Finish the Job’ on Border Wall Funding

The House of Representatives must “finish the job” when it comes to getting the funding for President Donald Trump’s wall along the U.S. border with Mexico House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA.) said Saturday.

During an exclusive interview with Breitbart News on SiriusXM, McCarthy reported news that the House has successfully secured an additional $5 billion for a border wall.

“I have worked very closely with the president on this,” McCarthy says. “We are already building part of the wall now in California. We’ve got to continue that and finish the job. And we’ve gotten, when they requested, about $1.2 or $1.6 billion already appropriated for that. And then the next appropriation process we’re going right now we just put in $5 billion. The president was very excited about that—I talked to him [on Wednesday]. So we’re going to bring that to the floor and get that moving and get the funding going.”

The Administration is strongly in favor of the inclusion of $5 billion for border wall construction and which includes associated technology. This is all apart of the Homeland Security appropriations bill that has been recently introduced in the House of Representatives.

Rep. Charles Fleischmann (R-TN.), a member of the House Appropriations subcommittee on homeland security, said he anticipated $5 billion that would be allocated for “wall plus” — meaning physical barriers in some spots, as well as other security mechanisms in places along the 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border where a wall might not be practical reports The Washington Post.

The post further reports that Rep. Nita M. Lowey (D-N.Y.), the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, said the $5 billion figure was a non-starter given numerous other needs in areas such as education and healthcare.“That number is unacceptable. It’s unacceptable,” Lowey said. The House Appropriations Committee has scheduled a vote for Wednesday.
