A big-time Republican donor is giving the party new lifeblood heading into the November midterm elections, cutting a $30 million check to the  Congressional Leadership Fund.

Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson made the donation earlier in May when Speaker of the House Paul Ryan hopped on a plan to meet with him in Las Vegas, Politico reports.

Ryan is unable to request such a large donation, so former Minnesota Gov. Norm Coleman, asked Adelson for a large contribution once Ryan left the room. The donation is not yet on the books, but will become public later in the month.

Republicans are in serious need of help if they are going to maintain the majority in the House.

Forty-seven House Republicans are either resigning, retiring or seeking other offices in 2018. Roughly 22 House members retire each election cycle, so to say the party is going through a seismic shift is not a misnomer.

It has been nearly 25 years — since 1994 — that a majority party incurred as many losses as Republicans have in 2018. Democrats controlled the House, leading up the to the 1994 midterms. The party had 28 members announce retirement, and Republicans subsequently took them to the cleaners, picking up 54 seats and outright claiming the majority in what is now known as the “Republican Revolution.”
