Trump cancels meeting with Putin, cites Russia’s seizure of Ukrainian vessels

President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he had decided to cancel a one-on-one meeting with Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin because Russia had not yet returned ships and sailors that it illegally seized earlier this week.

“Based on the fact that the ships and sailors have not been returned to Ukraine from Russia, I have decided it would be best for all parties concerned to cancel my previously scheduled meeting in Argentina with President Vladimir Putin,” Trump tweeted. “I look forward to a meaningful Summit again as soon as this situation is resolved!”

The cancellation comes after Russia seized three Ukrainian naval ships in the Black Sea Sunday after opening fire on them wounding several sailers.

“Weapons were used with the aim of forcibly stopping the Ukrainian warships,” the FSB said in a statement circulated to Russian state media. “As a result, all three Ukrainian naval vessels were seized in the Russian Federation’s territorial waters in the Black Sea.”

The seized ships consist of two small gunboats and a tugboat.

Ukraine denied any wrongdoing, accused Russia of military aggression, and asked for the international community to punish Russia.

The meeting was to take place at the G20 Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina this weekend.
