This Thanksgiving Brought to You By — Capitalism

Mmm, capitalism tastes great. Love the wonderful aromatics glazing the crispy turkey skin on this fist-sized drumstick, dipping that bad boy in spicy turkey gravy, and then a glob of silky smooth mashed potatoes, and then maybe a dollop of stuffing, and then a hint of cranberry sauce, and then — gulp, scene.

Oh, I’m sorry, was that uncompassionate of me? Children are going hungry somewhere in the world where there is no food and we shouldn’t be so greedy? Well, once upon a time in America, everyone was going hungry, and it wasn’t because of corporate fat cats stealing their turkeys.

That’s not the narrative you’re likely to get at one of the socialist think tanks masquerading as colleges nowadays. PETA (People for the Eating of Tasty Animals) is comparing the plight of turkeys to those of gays and blacks (if you’d like to call them from “reality,” you’re going to have to leave a voicemail). Left-wing bloggers are showing solidarity with Native American students protesting the holiday, due to the ugly history surrounding the European immigrants settling the pristine wilderness and fighting off savages.

Of course, no land should ever be settled on our ever-so-gentle Mother Earth, which displayed its loving side by wiping out half of the Eastern seaboard a few weeks back. Not to mention that most “imperialist” powers like a few handfuls of religious dissidents in rickety sailboats wouldn’t be so kind as to offer free government everything and tax-free casinos to the conquered.

Let’s not pretend that certain Native American tribes didn’t declare war on each other (despite intense efforts to “white-wash” history); some of them even scalping their victims and trading their skullcaps for wacky weed. The idealized version where the Indians were just a bunch of brown-skinned, peace-loving hippies who sat around stringing wampum, skinning buffaloes, and smoking peace pipes is a nasty fiction, invented solely to make Americans feel guilty for being prosperous.

It wasn’t always that way. Oh no. Once upon a time, Americans were — shhhh — progressives.

Back in the day, “the day” meaning 1623, people fled to the New World to get away from the kind of nanny-statism our awesome left-wingers champion today. But our patriotic kindred who washed up upon former Taxachusetts’ shore were, one way to put it, a bit on the naive, utopian side. Another way to put it — they were socialist jackasses.

But we’ll forgive our Puritan brethren, because they were able to pull off a feat of such unparalleled brilliance that no modern left-winger has yet been able to achieve it. It’s called “learning from your mistakes.”

So there was this guy named William Bradford, Billy to his friends, and he was a bit of an overeducated nerd. See, he’d been reading this guy named “Plato,” and this ancient Greek dude said that all people should have things in common. Never mind that the smarter ancient Greek dude named Aristotle, who was nonetheless the pupil of Plato, said that was a bunch of bunk, and people should own their own property, but should generally be generous to others. He wasn’t real hardcore about property rights; but still, the guy was already about 2,500 years ahead of today’s Prius-driving radical professors.

Well, Bradford decided everyone would sing kumbaya and throw in lot together and that would make life good for the folks at Plymouth Plantation. One small problem: the system didn’t work. And it wasn’t because of greedy banksters’ ATM fees or even currency devaluation or anything wonky like that. It’s just that people had a tendency to “free ride” off of others in a situation known as the “tragedy of the commons.”

The stupid white man starved the entire winter and it really was a miserable experience. The Native Americans nearby, “Indians” in Old World speak (America’s forefathers didn’t have GPS), did help them a bit, and that was cool. But the main reason the people didn’t starve during the second winter was by implementing a primitive form of capitalism: private property and personal responsibility. The first “get off my lawn” signs went up. If you’re a hipster who has never read this story before, then study up, butter-cup.

“Right-wing” bloggers didn’t invent this story, it comes right out of Billy Bradford’s dream journal. Fleeing religious persecution in Europe, the members of various Christian sects set off to the New World to found their utopian societies. One of them was Plymouth Plantation, and its head honcho was Bradford. After successive winters of near starvation (aided in the first by the Native Americans), the HCIC (Head Calvinist-in-Charge) relates the experiences of the settlement (1623). Much apologies for not being able to translate this long passage into modern eight-grade level English:

“The experience that was had in this common course and condition, tried sundry years and that amongst godly and sober men, may well evince the vanity of that conceit of Plato’s and other ancients applauded by some of later times; and that the taking away of property and bringing in community into a commonwealth would make them happy and flourishing; as if they were wiser than God. For this community (so far as it was) was found to breed much confusion and discontent and retard much employment that would have been to their benefit and comfort. For the young men, that were most able and fit for labor and service, did repine that they should spend their time and strength to work for other men’s wives and children without any recompense. The strong, or man of parts, had no more in division of victuals and clothes than he that was weak and not able to do a quarter the other could; this was thought injustice. The aged and graver men to be ranked and equalized in labors and victuals, clothes etc., with the meaner and younger sort, thought it some indignity and disrespect unto them. And for men’s wives to be commanded to do service for other men, as dressing their meat, washing their clothes, etc., they deemed it a kind of slavery, neither could many husbands well brook it. Upon the point all being to have alike, and all to do alike, they thought themselves in the like condition, and one as good as another; and so, if it did not cut off those relations that God hath set amongst men, yet it did at least much diminish and take off the mutual respects that should be preserved amongst them. And would have been worse if they had been men of another condition. Let none object this is men’s corruption, and nothing to the course itself. I answer, seeing all men have this corruption in them, God in His wisdom saw another course fitter for them.”

The experience of Plymouth Plantation is that of other utopian societies in world history, that freedom from oppression by the state does not lead to absolute freedom. The revolution of private property did not merely provide the means for individuals to meet their own needs, but rather to flourish spectacularly. Those who thirsted for individual freedom risked their lives and fortunes to found a new nation on the pillars of liberty and property. These ideals gave birth to dreams of a world where all can strive for personal excellence, uninhibited by a tyranny of morally inferior men.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving! Even you lefty whiners.

One Amazing Story

As a Twitter user I love reading and getting personal comments from the ‘celebrities’ I follow. But there aren’t any that can compare to this story. Charles Payne is a market analyst and CEO of his own company. He frequently is seen on the Fox Business Channel. You can read his financial columns Townhall.com. Charles has a very interesting personal story growing up with a mom who worked hard so he could have a chance for a better life and then taking those opportunities and becoming successful. But this story is not about him. Instead it’s about his wife. Fortunately, I happened to catch this very personal tale  on Twitter from its beginning, through all the ups and downs. Sure I could paste the tweets but Twitter just can’t capture the emotion of Charles in his own words. This is one family who will have a very thankful Thanksgiving.

Giving Thanks for…. 4%

This is Thanksgiving Day in the United States of America. By proclamations of pioneers, framers and Presidents long since past, we have consecrated this final Thursday of November to be a day that we give thanks for all of the persons and things we hold dear to our hearts.

Of course, this started out – and for most Americans continues to be, a time of giving thanks to GOD. From the first Thanksgiving of famous lore to the ones we will have today, we have been grateful for many things.

Topping the list for most is family, friends and the like. Others, who share the mental depth with a standard kiddie pool, may think of toys, big and small. But for me, other than for my relationship with the Lord Almighty (shhhh! That’s protected speech….) I am grateful the most for one thing – 4%.

Four percent, you say? Of what? Is that what you made off your munies last year? I wish… Maybe 4% body fat? HA! One of my cheeks has 4% body fat (not telling which one either…). Four percent APR on your home re-fi? Much better than the ‘70’s for sure, but no…

I GOT IT! Four percent unemployment! Uhhh nope. Haven’t even been in the vicinity of that since the year 3 B.O. (that would be Before Obama. 2005 on the old calendar).

No, the 4% I am talking about is the statistically minuscule chance that I would be born in the greatest country the world has even seen – America! Now, I know how cheesy that sounded, but think about it. If you are a natural born American, there was a 96% chance that you would have been born in another country. Not that being born in countries like England, Canada, France (…well) are necessarily bad, but what of the billions born into true and abject poverty? And I am not talking about American poverty either. Someone square in the middle of the American poverty class (about 10k) would qualify to be in the top 13% of wage earners around the world! Our poverty line – at about $20,000 for a family of 4 – would vault you into the 90th percentile. In some countries, you would be royalty!

And while the basic, and most worthwhile things to be thankful for – life, family, friends – are a universal blessing to most, being in this 4% offers opportunities to add descriptors to the afore mention gifts. The 4% provides us with not only life, but a chance for a good life; not just a family, but a happy, prosperous family; and not just friends, but trustworthy friends. Plus one thing the most of the world still lacks – LIBERTY!!

America is not all wine and roses, far from it, but despite press coverage that might suggest otherwise, it is still the United States that the world turns to for help. It is still America and her Constitution that other counties try to emulate. It is this 4%, that many in the other 96% will move heaven and earth, leave everything they know behind to travel to a land that still holds the promise of prosperity.

So I am grateful to be a part of this 4%, for because of this, I have many more things to be grateful for!

Thankful for what really matters

I’ve given my thanks to those close to me, but there are more Americans not so near that deserve some contemplation, consideration and admiration.

I’m thankful for the farmer who goes to bed weary, but awakes before dawn to tend to the fields. He who has God riding shotgun on that tractor, runs it till it won’t then fixes it so it will. Thank you farmer, producer of food.

I’m thankful for the soldier who’s standing guard upon that wall. To their families that say their Thanksgiving prayers with an empty chair at the table. Thank you protectors of freedom.

I’m thankful for business owners, the tireless engine that keeps America going – worker of 20 hour days, taker of incredible risks, creator of jobs and wealth and the real creators of jobs. Thank you makers and sellers of goods.

I’m thankful for Conservatives, especially those “with a conscience”. Defending the right of all to say their piece, defend themselves, pursue property, and live freely. Thank you defenders of the Constitution.

At it’s core, I suppose I am actually saying that I am thankful for something simpler – The Constitution itself and those that show a determined resolve to hold our founding document true. For without that document, the blessings of liberty mentioned above will be lost to those less-thankful and blissfully unaware of the damage they do.

Happy Thanksgiving from CDN and George Washington

It is very easy to get caught up in the travesties of justice, mocking of our nation and insults to her people emanating from our own centers of government and the leaders within. It would not take long consideration to find many reasons for which we could ask the question, “what the heck do we have to be thankful for?”

It also takes very little time to answer that question. Most of all, I am thankful that I have the opportunities and freedoms present simply because I live in America – the greatest nation on Earth.

I am eternally grateful to have a wonderful, loving and supportive wife and family. Without whom all things would be much more difficult and of much less consequence.

I am incredibly thankful for the wealth of talent that has coalesced around the cause of freedom  to bring CDNews to where it is today and the fantastic possibilities presented for its continued success. The leadership team of Michelle Ray, Cindi Appleberry and A.F. Branco make CDN possible. Kira Davis, AiPolitics, Nicole Pearce are the staff members that help get it done. The 40+ contributors that think about, investigate and opine on CDN are the foundation. Without each and every one of them – CDN would still be a lonely personal blog with a few hundred visits a day (you can see them all HERE).

I am, without reservation, thankful for you – our readers, twitter followers, facebook fans, and google+ encircled people (really google.. circles?). You challenge us with your replies, comments and those sometimes #headdesk-causing letters to the editor. I value even those I disagree with in the hopes of beneficial discussion and debate.

Please accept a humble Thank You from all of the staff, contributors and myself. We wish you and your families a warm, festive, family-filled Thanksgiving day.

In closing, Michelle reminded me of the proclamation that gave us this day of thanks. I find it a great proof of the foundation from which all great things in this nation have come from.

By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor– and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be– That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks–for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation–for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war–for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed–for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted–for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions– to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually–to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed–to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord–To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and us–and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

A Personal Thanksgiving

I wanted to take a moment to relay my state of being this morning in relation to Thanksgiving, and to express my gratitude to some deserving people in my life. If you know me, you know that I am an avid proponent of expressing gratitude on a daily basis, but this Thanksgiving presents me with a unique opportunity to examine why being grateful, as a way of life, is so important to me.

I found myself among the ranks of the unemployed as of yesterday. While it was not entirely unexpected, being suddenly without a steady source of income is stressful, to say the least. Yet, despite what lies ahead for me in facing a job search in this economy, I remain completely grateful for my life. When I relayed the news to my friends and family, I was instantly reminded how much of a support system that I have in them. There were minimal condolences, and much asking about prospects and affirmations of my ability to overcome. There were reminders that these people would do all that they could to help and that I would never want for the basics in life. When I posted about it on Twitter, I was flooded by empathy, sympathy and offers to assist. For the most part, the people taking the time to express their support are total strangers to me. They are people that I have never met, never talked to beyond political discussion or the random light hearted conversation in 140 characters. I am beyond grateful, and not at all surprised. My followers on Twitter and my friends on Facebook are, without a doubt, the shining example of true compassion that many like to say doesn’t exist in the Conservative realm of political activists. Deniers be damned; I see it every.single.day.

I was raised, like so many of my Twitter and Facebook friends, to depend on myself and to turn to family and friends if the need should arise. I was not raised to seek a handout or to give up responsibility during the more difficult moments in life. I have grown up knowing that I am the only one who controls my actions and reactions to the trials in life. I am thankful to have been so empowered and to have chosen to live my days keeping that responsibilty and its impact in the forefront of my mind at all times.

In particular, I am eternally grateful for my parents for instilling that sense of responsibility and sense of security that comes with a family that loves one another across great distances. I am grateful to my ex-husband for continuing to be a real friend and a source of daily encouragement and support. The Conservative Daily News staff is daily inspiration to me! These amazing people are dedicated to their lives, their families, their careers.. and to you, our readers. They are passion for freedom and propserity, embodied and exhibited in the extra time they take and effort they make to write for YOU!

I am ever mindful, and very often reminded, of the support I have from my online friends. I am taking this space to say a very warm “THANK YOU!” to Loren Heal (@lheal on twitter) for not only being a daily source of inspiration to me and many in #tcot, but for thinking of me so specifically yesterday. Loren and I have never met, and yet he has gone out of his way to encourage and offer his assistance in helping me in my job search. I am overwhelmed at his generosity!

Happy Thanksgiving, friends and strangers. May each and every one of you find yourself as blessed and as empowered in your every day as I am! #OccupyGrateful

Lets Give the Liberals the Tax Hikes They Demand: Thanksgiving Edition

As the sweet aroma of Mom’s pumpkin pie fills the home this Thanksgiving morning, and with the turkey all set to go into the oven, I decided to take the time out to give thanks to Rich Mitchell and the CDN staff for giving me the platform to share my conservative news and opinion articles today. The following is my contribution to the CDN mission by producing some out-of-the-box ideas on the most important issue facing Americans in the coming year: How to reduce our massive national debt, and how to unlock the current Congressional stalemate by giving the Democrats the tax hikes they so fiercely demand. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at CDN. Enjoy your day.

It is once again time to call the Liberal Democrat’s bluff. Let’s give them the tax increases they so heartily demand, but on their own stated ideological terms. Liberals have certain planks in their ideology that must be used in the tax increase debate up in Congress. This proposed tax increase leglislation has to include such lovely-sounding Liberal catch-phrases of wealth redistribution, social justice, equal justice, and President Obama’s personal favorite, community service. (while keeping in mind the Democrat’s past history of reneging on promised cuts in federal spending.)

Let’s start out by taking Wolf Blitzer’s often-asked question of whether GOP Presidential candidates would accept a 10 to 1 ratio of budget cuts to tax increase dollars. The GOP must call the Liberal media’s bluff and accept that scenario… in an intelligent, yet very simple way. Draw up the bill in the House of Representatives immediately that says yes, the GOP will accept $10 dollars in budget cuts for every single dollar in increases taxes. That is straight forward and simple enough, even for the mathematically challenged Democrats and President Obama to understand.  Now that we have agreed to Wolf Blitzer’s leftist-parroted demands for those tax increases during the current recession, let’s take it one step further in appeasing the Liberals. Let’s add the Liberal/OWS ideological planks of equal justice, social justice, wealth redistribution and community service into the new tax increase bill shall we?

Introducing HR-2011-The Liberal Tax Increase Bill of 2011- (NOT an actual bill in congress)

Bill Sponsored by DJ Redman  No Co-sponsors to date.

Section 1-A: Equal Justice for all in the form of tax increases.

Equal justice means just what the title says. Equal treatment for all Americans, regardless of race, national origin, income status, or political affiliation. Therefore, in keeping with the Liberal ideology of “equal justice for all” the tax increases will be applied to every adult of working age in America.( whether they actually work or not) Section 1-A of the Liberal tax increase bill of 2011,may also be referred to as, “Equal justice in paying your fair share in America.” In this section there will be a means tested chart for how much new taxes will be levied on every person in the USA, illegals included, regardless of private sector income. Welfare checks, rent subsidies, WIC coupons, utility bill payments, food stamps and every other hidden government pay- for- not- working entitlement program will be taxed before checks/payments will be sent out. Equal justice, as in everyone paying their fair share as outlined in this section should really have the support of every debt-spending Liberal in Congress, hands down. If the workers of America have to pay more taxes on their hard-earned wealth, making the non-workers pay taxes on their government handouts should also make the Unions quite happy. Millionaire Union Chiefs could say they are working hard to protect the workers in America by supporting tax increases on the freeloaders and non-producers of our society who unfairly burden their working class Union members. This section will do wonders for the entitlement class in America as they will be able to now stand up and be counted as actual taxpayers, instead of a 100% parasitic drain on society.

Section 1-B of the Liberal Tax Increase Bill of 2011 will include several measures of the Liberals beloved “Social Justice” plank.

Section 1-B will include mandatory work for welfare reforms built upon the 1994 GOP Welfare reform plan that reduced the number of people on welfare by 50% by the year 1998. Social justice demands that the welfare class do their part in society to reduce our national debt and rebuild America. Work for welfare will also have the added benefit of restoring some self-respect into the welfare class, so that when they scurry to their mailbox for their government entitlement ”paychecks” as they like to call them, they will have the added pleasure of knowing that they have actually earned that money. Social Justice will be well-served in this action, by evening out the class warfare of today that is being caused by 50% of the population demanding that the working class support them. True Social Justice demands that the working class be represented equally, not just the racial politics-driven minorities, the poor, or the illegal aliens in America.

Section 1–C of the Liberal Tax Increase Bill of 2011 will also include a healthy dose of the wealth redistribution that President Obama has pushed his Democrats to achieve for 3 straight years. As in any “Social Justice, and Equal Justice” driven wealth redistributive policies, there has to be fairness across the economic spectrum. This has to start with sections 1-A and 1-B, where everyone not only shares in the wealth created by the citizenry, but also must include the sharing of the debt that the very government they have elected has created. There is no justice of any form inherent in the Liberal ideology of sharing in the wealth while refusing to share in the debt at the same time, period. Every single adult in America will share in our debt, one way or the other. This is a true form of Social Justice, so it should receive 100% Democratic support. In order to not infuriate the welfare class, we will use a long standing Democratic budgetary trick in not calling it a welfare tax. Let’s instead label it “Processing Fees to Improve America” on all unearned entitlement check stubs. That way, Democrats can stand up in Congress and tell their voting base that they did not, in fact raise taxes on them. (wink) Section 1-C simply states that every adult in America will now share in our national debt, not just the working class and job-creating business class.

Section 2 of the Liberal Tax Increase Bill of 2011 will contain  penalties  provisions that simply states that any elected official found to be in violation of the 10 to 1 budget cuts to tax increases ratio in this bill, (as Democrats did when they increased spending by $480 billion after promising President Reagan $280 billion in cuts) will face an immediate Bernie Madoff-style trial after being suspended from Congress. For every dollar they are found to be increasing in spending instead of cutting, they will forfeit $10 dollars of their personal wealth, most of which they have acquired through illegal insider trading and ripping off the taxpayers to begin with. Every elected official who’s signature is found to be on any spending bill breaking the 10 to 1 budget cuts to tax increases provisions in this bill will share equally in paying off the illegal increased spending. How;s that for “Equal Justice” Congress ? We the people will now be able to hold elected officials responsible for their debt-spending thanks to the Liberal tax Increase bill of 2011. In the case of elected members of Congress found guilty of  increasing spending under this new law, and who can not afford to repay the citizenry the full amount, see section 3.

Section -2-A of the Liberal Tax Increase Bill of 2011 will include a very healthy dose of Barack Obama’s ideological roots that propelled him into politics in the first place: Community service. Any elected official found to be in violation of section 2, and can not repay the citizenry  for the illegal spending increases outlines in this bill will be mandated to perform community service to pay off their debt to society at a rate of 1 hour for every dollar they owe the American public. With the massive increases of manpower derived from this penalty phase,  politicians caught lying to the American people and not making the agreed upon budget cuts,  will be mandated to do everything Barack Obama says his fake jobs bill would do:  We will rebuild all of our bridges, roadways, and schools with this new-found free labor. We will send our convicted politicians into the downtrodden slums and ghettos to clean them up, giving Barack Obama and his Democrats the “urban renewal” they so desire, and it won’t cost the taxpayers one thin dime in labor. We can also have criminal politicians save the Post Office from the government and labor-union caused bankruptcy crisis they are currently under, by having them sort and deliver mail as part of their community service. Democrats have always been the champions of imprisoned felons rights groups, so we shall also mandate that all prisoners do extensive community service as part of the new social justice programs in HR 2011, thereby supplying America with an estimated annual 500 million free man-hours of labor to rebuild America.  Felonious members of Congress will be working side by side with the convicted murderers, rapists, Occupy Wall Street vermin, welfare class, and convicted illegal drug cartel members in the ultimate form of their beloved Social Justice.

*HR-2011 is reported to have national bi-partisan support, according to several ex-members of Congress, unnamed sources, and distant friends of ex-Congressional aides, all of whom who wish to remain anonymous for personal and national security reasons.

*HR-2011 is estimated to cut our national debt by over $4 trillion dollars a year by the newly formed *Common Sense Home Budgetarians/Working Taxpayers of America Foundation.

*Yes these statements are made in humor, using fictitious group’s names to make the point of how our government uses their government-funded non-profit puppet organizations statistics and unnamed sources to claim bi-partisan support, budgetary savings etc.

Turn Away from Ungratefulness Toward Prosperity

An ungrateful heart leads to bitterness and failure. Our Founding Fathers understood this.  They also understood that America and the hope she offers were no accident.  They believed that Divine Providence was responsible for the formation of a country where freedom and individual responsibility were valued and rewarded above all else.  In the very first Presidential Thanksgiving Proclamation, President George Washington declared Americans must give thanks “That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks – for his kind care and protection of the People of this country” and also “that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions”

In his Thanksgiving Proclamation of 1863, the first of a now unbroken string of Presidential Proclamations, Abraham Lincoln said: “And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged.”

Both of these great men understood the importance of a grateful heart.  It is gratefulness that allows us to acknowledge the blessings around us.  It is gratefulness that encourages us to stop for a moment and take account of the grace and blessings that have been bestowed upon us by our Almighty Creator.  It is gratefulness that prevents our hearts from turning to stone and rendering us incapable of compassion and progress.  Our ancestors felt so strongly about this that they saw fit to declare a national day of thanks, when we as citizens would join in one voice and sentiment to express gratefulness. However, these great men did not believe giving thanks as a nation was enough in and of itself. They felt  along with thanksgiving should come repentance.  Both Lincoln and Washington recognized that thanksgiving without self-examination was useless.  They called for national repentance as well. For those of you who don’t quite understand what repentance is, Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines it as “repent” as “to turn from sin and dedicate oneself to the amendment of one’s life; to feel regret or contrition; to change one’s mind”.  Lincoln and Washington had both just led the nation through revolutionary and civil war.  They understood the importance of being grateful for the fine nation that resulted in both wars, but they also knew that much pain had been wrought upon the American people throughout.  They knew that in order to move forward not only did Americans need to thank, they also needed to forgive.

As we approach another Thanksgiving in this great country I wonder if we have forgotten how to be thankful as a nation.  Our cities are currently being overrun by the most ungrateful of citizens.  Unlike the tea party protests, Occupiers across the nation have not publicly declared one second of gratefulness or appreciation for all America has offered and continues to offer by way of comfort and security.  Their ungratefulness has exposed the hardest of hearts among these protesters. We have seen violent deaths, sexual assaults, batteries, cursing, yelling, vandalism, throwing of bodily fluids and a complete disregard for the welfare of average, working Americans and their property.  We have managed to raise an entire generation of ungrateful children and our nation is paying dearly for that.  Our children are throwing a temper tantrum.  Their ungrateful hearts (and many of ours) have turned to stone and the rest of us are witnessing the results, not only in their protests, but in the economy and general welfare of the country.  Perhaps its time to step back on this most uniquely American holiday and reflect on our hearts.  We have our troubles but we sill have so much to be thankful for when we look at the rest of the world.   We are free, and despite our many problems that is a special gift.  But we cannot end there.  Alongside our thankfulness this season let us remember the divisions that have always plagued us, and let us repent.  Let us recognize that we are all sinners; we have all hurt someone at some point.  We have wandered from our founding principles and God-given mandates.  We have come to believe we deserve all of our blessings.  We must turn away from that sense of entitlement, recognize it for the sin that it is, and move forward with grateful hearts.

I am no fool.  I know that there are many (far too many) Americans who see nothing wrong with wanting more while giving nothing.  There are many reading this right now who scoff at the idea that they need to apologize or ask forgiveness for anything.  But for those of us who see value in the idea of thankful repentance, our Founding Fathers saw fit to establish a national day of Thanksgiving.  They saw fit to give us the choice to be heard as a nation, to stand together, if only for one day.  Lets not waste that day and what it represents.  This Thanksgiving lets make the choice, as a nation, to turn  and say thank you; turn to our neighbors and say forgive me; turn to our God and say we repent – we turn away from ungratefulness of the past and toward the bounty of a thankful America.

DHS Takes Action Against.. Exploding Turkeys

DHS Chief Janet Napolitano wants America to know they are on the job keeping everyone safe this holiday season. Watch the following video on how the geniuses at the Department of Homeland Security are going out of their way to protect (by spending taxpayer dollars on ridiculous common sense issues) people who apparently are too lazy to read the directions on every turkey fryer sold in America today.

Let’s try to figure out how these people set up this “demonstration on an exploding turkey” shall we?

1 – Make sure you have the fryer over 3/4 full of hot oil so it spills over the edge and catches fire. Check.

2 – Make sure the turkey is completely frozen beforehand, as we all have had the experience of seeing what happens when frozen foods meet hot oil, such as french fries, chicken wings, fish etc. Ka-Whoosh! Big fire!

3 – Let’s make sure we have a fireman in a fire-suit covered from head to toe, with an oxygen mask, boots, gloves, the whole nine yards to show the public how responsible our government is in protecting their actor’s well-being. This also makes for very dramatic theater to get the dummies attention, because they must be dummies refusing to read the instructions and tossing frozen turkeys into a 375 degree fryer loaded with hot oil.

4 – This excellent usage of taxpayer dollars will allow Napolitano and company at the DHS to demand a few billion more tax dollars for next year’s big government expansion of turkey fryer police and federal regulators protecting America from exploding turkeys, and dummies houses being burned down by ignorant morons too stupid or lazy to read the instructions that come with every turkey fryer sold in the U.S.A.

Has America become such a dumbed-down nanny-state that we now need Janet Napolitano and the Department of Homeland Security teaching us how to deep fry a turkey on Thanksgiving? Maybe this all came about because they do not have enough work to do today, seeing as to how they just declared that ICE and Border agents will no longer be permitted to search for and detain for deportation, illegal immigrants in America, therefore freeing them up to make commercials about the dangers of exploding turkeys? This is what you get when a government goes wild, asking for 250,000 more employees, and then makes up rules that prevents them from doing the jobs they were hired to do in the first place! Here is a hat tip for Ms. Napolitano, free of charge: Either do your job and detain and deport illegal immigrants who are breaking the law when entering America, or get out of our government! Clear enough?

2012 just can’t get here fast enough!
