Thanks, Reilly

In this time of partisan politics and societal narcissism, we, as a people – both individually and as a society – often forget the underlying idea behind e pluribus unum, “out of many, one,” our national motto. It is based in a notion that many individuals can come together to form a society – a free, civilized society, where each individual not only executes self-reliance and individual responsibility, but a level of benevolence and compassion that produces the feeling of a unique identity; of national “family.” But these modern times betray our roots, in action, thought and deed, making us (or many of us anyway) unworthy of the motto itself.

From the Baby Boomer “Me Generation” to the “Gen X-ers,” “Millenials” and “New Silent Generation,” each has been instilled with not only a unearned and falsely elevated sense of self-worth, but an entitled and self-centered sense of being that has led us away from e pluribus unum; away from the benevolence of brotherhood; away from the compassion that creates a truly civilized society. This has come to pass through the manipulation of our people by political opportunists and the elitism of the Progressive Movement.

I could delve into the minutia of the groups that have foisted this malady upon our nation, but that is not the focus of this article. Identifying these culprits as the source of the cancer does not serve to cure the cancer. But it does allow us to see how the cancer spreads. It spreads through the vicious concept of “divide and conquer.” Those who thirst for power instead of righteous service to the nation serve their lust by dividing our people to stand against ourselves. They pit labeled group against labeled group, fomenting resentment, envy, fear and even hated for our fellow man, simply so create a larger sub-group than their competitors, and simply to attain power and the ill-gotten riches that tearing apart a peoples affords.

Truth be told, the overwhelming number of Americans want and strive for the same things: a house (so it can become a home), comfort (so they can achieve safety), a meaningful and un-manipulated education for our children (so they can embrace the opportunities before them) and freedom to associate (family and friends). Yes, there are other aspects of agreement amongst the great majority of Americans, but these serve to make my point. We as Americans have more in common that we do in difference. It is the power seekers and the special interest Progressives who seek to pit us against one another; who quest to divide us to crisis so that they can provide the next “final solution.”

We, as a people, have lost our way. We have forgotten what it is to be truly benevolent, to be truly kind and caring. We have been conditioned to seek victimhood over a call to sacrifice; conditioned to put ourselves and our personal desires ahead of our brothers and sisters’ basic needs; to abdicate loyalty to others should the task of loyalty become burdensome. We have forgotten one of the greatest “rules” of all time, “So in everything, do unto others what you would have them do to you…” I would add to that, to be so bold, that an overwhelming majority of Americans have also become conditioned to believe that government is the only answer; the only solution; the only entity capable of helping the victim, the needy, the destitute, those without hope. Perhaps this last notion – that government is the only answer – is the most evil lie of all, society’s cancer, the destroyer of our Republic.

You may ask what brought me to these thoughts. It wasn’t a political event or discussion. It wasn’t a book or a film. It was, simply, painfully, the passing of my dog; loyal, caring, steadfast, true and loving without condition.

At 3:13am, June 25, 2014, my good friend of 11 years and 11 days, Reilly, slipped the captive bonds of this world to escape the pain that the ravages of age inflict upon all living things.

He was a confidant and a companion; the gentlest being I have ever encountered. Never encumbered by the trappings of humanity’s flaws, the love he exuded was palpable by even the harshest cynic.

Even as I grieve his loss – a sadness more crippling than I ever imagined it would be, I can’t help but feel his loyalty; his gentleness; his unconditional love touching my heart from beyond, as if to feel him lick my face and lay his head on my lap, looking up to me with those compassionate, true and soulful eyes to say, “It’s okay, Daddy. We’ll get through this.”

True, honest, loyal, giving and loving: benevolent. From the moment I held him as a puppy to his last seconds being held in my hands, he executed what we as a nation have taken for granted. He, my wife Nancy and I became a “family,” we became “one,” without condition or caveat. The addition of his sister, Coulter, completed our little family. E pluribus unum, if only for our small part of the world.

Last night, as Nancy and I lay for the first moments of a life without Reilly, I said, “Well, he’s God’s dog now.” To which, Nancy replied, “He was always God’s dog. He just let you play with him awhile.” Truer words, I have come to accept, I don’t think have ever been spoken.

I am thankful for each minute, each second I shared with Reilly, and I will always remember him with the greatest of affection – in unconditional love – and with a heartfelt gratitude for that special relationship; that special time that passed much too quickly. I miss him, and I will miss him – Reilly, my trusted friend – terribly.

In his passing I have found my renewed desire to execute benevolence and to guard against those who would affect division amongst we Americans; affect transgression against e pluribus unum. I hope that whatever your catalyst is for your rededication to this principle does not come complete with the anguish mine did.

To my friend Reilly, God bless you my good boy. Daddy loves you…he always will. Time for sleeping.

Is Too Much Freedom Bringing America Down?

America is the greatest nation in the world. I hate to think what this world would be like without America. Just look back in history. If America wasn’t around, the whole world might be speaking German right now. And that’s only one example. America has come to the aid of many countries over the years. We have given aid to so many people around the world. This country has done so much for freedom around the world that I truly believe that the world would be in bloody chaos if it were not for the good old U.S. Of A. Our  people have fought and died all over the world so that other people can enjoy just some of the many freedoms we enjoy ourselves. Throughout history, America has been a beacon to people all around the world. We have come through the Revolutionary war, our Civil War, two world wars, and are now in what many people think is our biggest fight of all. The war on terrorism is what many people think is world war III, and I have to agree. Terrorism is definitely a world threat, and must be fought wherever the terrorists are hiding. Like all other wars, we are fighting so we can be free. If anything is worth fighting for, it is definitely freedom.

FREEDOM:     (Merriam-Webster on line)

The quality or state of being free.

a) The absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action

b) Liberation from slavery or restraint or from the power of another

c) The quality or state of being exempt or released, usually from something onerous.

d) The quality of being frank, open or outspoken.

e) Boldness of conception

f) Unrestricted use.

g) Total absence of restraint, to merely a sense of not being unduly hampered or frustrated.

Those definitions of freedom are what Americans have fought and died for, for so manyyears. It seems ironic that the very thing we have fought and died for over the years, is the very thing  that is destroying our society today.

My father once told me that too much of anything is not good for you. Moreover, I believe this also applies to freedom. It seems that we have so much freedom in this country, that we are headed into an ‘anything goes’ society.  And when you have an anything goes society, chaos and anarchy is sure to follow.

Over the years the rules of society have just gotten more lax.  And once you get to where we are as a people, it’s hard to take back what you already have given. Remember the old saying, “give them an inch, and they’ll take a mile”.   Each time society gets a little more liberal, there is always another window to go through. When are we as a people going to say, enough is enough, and put our foot down?  And say ‘that’s it’.  I, as an individual, have already come to that point. I cannot believe this is the same country that I grew up in. I was born in 1952. I am a baby boomer. And I feel now like I think the cowboys of the old west must have felt when civilization moved west. Men that lived in the late 1800’s that moved into the new century, and found themselves in a different new world that they didn’t understand. Like the Margret Mitchell novel, their whole way of life was gone with the wind.   However, I guess that’s what progress is all about.

A society has to have parameters, certain rules that keep us a strong society, a moral society and a just society. Over the years, I have watched as our society started to crumble because those same parameters have been crumbling. We have had a Constitution in this country since 1776, why in all that time did no one think to walk around naked in public, now around the country in the name of freedom, they walk around naked. God was once our cornerstone as a society, now in the name of freedom he is mocked, ridiculed and defaced. Parents used to raise and protect their kids the way they thought was right, Now in the name of freedom, a school can give a girl birth control pills without telling the parents. Right or wrong, it does not matter what people do anymore, because it is their right.

It appears to me, as we have broken down those parameters, we have lost our country, freedom without parameters and common sense is crumbling our society and we sit and ignore it all in the name of freedom.

Socialism Destroys Society

1014982_socialismThe socialist left purports to promote universal acceptance, the provision of basic human needs, and the freeing of spontaneous creative impulses. But due to several fundamental misunderstandings about humanity, which play directly into the hands of totalitarian politicians, socialists actually destroy human rationality, content families, harmonious societies, productive economies, and any semblance of government based on true justice.

The implementation of the value of equality is the cover the left runs under to destroy capitalism, hierarchical political and social structures, and reason as a prelude to human reinvention. Since equality is not an ethic grounded in reality or reflected by nature, this moral imperative wars against nature, and by extension, human nature itself.

Why are those on the left so dismissive of human nature in their worldview? Why do they not account for economic limitations whatsoever? The answer is that they share a deeply totalitarian desire to create values in absolute freedom and to remake humanity as they see fit. This necessarily entails giving the state unlimited power.

Leftists argue that conservatism is obsolete because its assumptions about human beings’ rational nature are ill-founded. Many on the left believe that the Enlightenment’s emphasis on reason portrays a half-human view of people. They claim that they desire to integrate man’s rational and emotional sides in order to restore human relations and a government based on compassion, empathy, and love, rather than rational self-interest.

But primarily because they tend to live in a state of material comfort, leftists are led to believe that civilization is an artificial state of affairs where man is insulated from the demands of nature; and therefore, natural law. Human nature and history do not apply. In other words, man can be reinvented and re-engineered by a socialist vanguard. This endeavor would supposedly save man and eliminate war, poverty, and misery.

Human experience does not support the left’s point of view. The main source of the leftist’s misunderstanding of human nature is that he assumes that man is a product of society. He also directly and irrationally wars against the chief factor that led to human civilization: rationality.

Rationality to the left is a grave enemy. It is a state of mind appearing to the left as rigid, blunt, and alien. The leftist adopts this view of rationality because he fears the regimentation of human life and thought, the formalization of human relations in a market (what Marxists might call “commodifying” human relations), and the withering of emotions such as compassion and empathy. Ironically, it is the pursuit of a society rooted in emotion and not reason that leads straight to the collectivist mob mentality so characteristic of totalitarian regimes.

The left’s emotion-based outlook creates what has been called “repressive tolerance,” or an irrational lashing out against human judgment and all forms of traditional morality. The cultural marxist left cannot accept “civil society” as a place of free-ranging emotions and spontaneous value creation, competition, and destruction in the industrial-capitalist context; to him, society must be co-opted and managed towards the obliteration of value judgment as a necessary step towards domination of the economic system.

Mankind must be economically dominated so that social engineering can proceed from a material basis. In the capitalist hierarchical context the left’s destructive plan is carried out by rewarding conformist behavior or non-critical thought; by suppressing those who succeed relative to others and who refuse to bend to leftist dictates; and by incentivizing failure. This system insulates the entrenched elites from challengers from below and embeds the elites’ fiats in all human relations.

Thus, there is an important flaw in the left’s reasoning (if we may distinguish it for sake of argument from rationalization), one encapsulated well by Michels’ “Iron Law of Oligarchy” or the idea that in every political system, oligarchs have a tendency to rule — the left exculpates itself from its own moral system, which is supposedly based on equality.

So we return to our original problem of man: Is he naturally a rational animal or an irrational emotional animal? The answer is that he is “naturally” neither.

Man has the capacity to reason; and as Ayn Rand shows in The Virtue of Selfishness, this faculty must be actively engaged and exercised or it decays and shrivels. Man has emotional instincts as well, and these are the most fundamental of needs to satisfy for healthy humans. But emotion must be put in the service of reason in order for civilization to flourish. Why is this?

Because a society that operates purely on emotion is not a society at all. It is animalistic in orientation at its very core. Justice itself is a concept that implies the application of uniform standards of behavior in society as a whole. This aspect of civilization proper requires reason, and not empathy or emotion removed from logic.

Without justice, the strong are free to oppress the weak, the clever to swindle the dull, and ruthless megalomaniacs to manipulate and rule the masses. There must be a set of codified morality to guide society, or else arbitrary or pure emotion will cause fluctuations in social relations, occasionally spilling into mob violence.

Only individual rationality can prevent the exploitation of man by man. Emotional manipulation, primarily employing fear, can only be countered with critical reason. The opposite of fear that is blind hope has been the preferred tool of demagogues since the dawn of civilization.

Yet emotion, and the display of it, has an important role to play in human relations. There is no actual dispute on this point here. There is the matter, however, of the role emotion plays in politics. For this matter, we should refer again to the importance of values.

Socialism fails because of its inability to acknowledge human nature and motivation. To quote Ludwig von Mises’ Human Action:

We call contentment or satisfaction that state of a human being which does not and cannot result in any action. Acting man is eager to substitute a more satisfactory state of affairs for a less satisfactory. His mind imagines conditions which suit him better, and his action aims at bringing about this desired state. The incentive that impels a man to act is always some uneasiness. A man perfectly content with the state of his affairs would have no incentive to change things. He would have neither wishes nor desires; he would be perfectly happy. (13)

Socialism sets out to fulfill human happiness through the provision of base material needs, but incentivizes idleness by removing the necessity to produce what satisfies those material needs. Socialism therefore leads ultimately to economic implosion. The system also debases people by destroying virtue, since loyalty to the party trumps all else. It demoralizes society by crushing the human spirit, thereby leading to precisely the kind of widespread alienation it proclaims to cure.

Men, being ultimately demoralized, do not cooperate with their enslavers under socialism, but are rather ambivalent. After society’s values are obliterated, wanton corruption and shameless inhumanity ensue. The result is an unproductive, impoverished, irrational, and vulgar society that collapses according to its own internal contradictions.

The task for the American patriot who seeks to preserve his society intact is to engage in rational discourse and value transmission with his fellow citizens. Individualist ethics, shared humanity, and truth are the weapons to prevent our demoralization and economic destruction.

Most importantly, it is our behavior in our community, our little kindnesses, our kindred observations, our understanding of the point of view of others and our friendly challenges to erroneous thinking that make the difference in the long-run. As Vaclav Havel put it, we must “live in truth” in order to defeat socialism.

How “progressives” Roll

When the institutionalized “progressive” left’s ancestors invaded from London and Frankfurt they made a conscious decision to re-engineer America’s culture, “to remold it nearer to the heart’s desire”.  Since they began that process American society has steadily decayed.

In post WWII America, before “progressives” changed immigration laws to reduce immigration from Europe and accelerate immigration from third world countries, people were able to leave their home’s doors unlocked at night.  Keys could be left in the ignition with the doors unlocked and nobody would steal the car parked in front of the house. Getting divorced, having children out of wedlock, being dependent on welfare or food stamps, committing crimes, all brought shame to the individual and to the family.  The nation shared values based on a common heritage of European Christian beliefs.

At school, following a morning prayer children began each day by saying the pledge of allegiance.  Nobody was offended by saying either the prayer or the pledge.  Since their ancestors came to America because they loved America and wanted to be Americans, the children saw themselves as Americans, not Irish-Americans, or Polish-Americans or Belgian-Americans.

Kids knew that if they didn’t study they might fail, and if they failed they wouldn’t graduate.  When they played sports they kept score.  The better team won and only the best team earned the trophy.  They were familiar with concepts like good and evil, right and wrong, truth and lies, honor and dishonor, fairness and cheating, winners and losers.  They were expected to meet societal standards of performance and behavior.  They learned the difference between achievement and failure.  If they failed, they were encouraged to pick themselves up and try again.  Failure was not a disgrace.  It was simply a part of life people faced when they took risks and dared to achieve.

When they got home from school, Mom was waiting for them.  Her job was to run the home and play a big role in raising the kids.  She didn’t need to work outside the home.  Dad made enough money to support the family financially.  Both parents contributed to raising the kids and passing along the family values they once learned.  Latch key kids were the exception, not the rule.

Piece by piece, “progressives” began chipping away at this foundation of American society.

They eroded family values through Women’s Lib.  According to the “progressive” doctrine, if you were a stay at home Mom you were not “good enough”.  In order to be “equal” to a man, a woman must behave like a man and compete with men outside the home.  Once Mom left to compete for Dad’s job, when the kids got home from school nobody was there.

Great Society “progressive” programs further eroded the family and family values.  The more out of wedlock children they had, the more welfare paid unmarried mothers.  Instead of being a source of shame, having children out of wedlock became a source of money.  Failure to perpetuate the traditional two parent family and family values was rewarded by big government “progressive” spending.  Eventually, with help from Hollywood “progressive” propaganda, single motherhood became a cause for celebration, a badge of honor.  Fathers became unknown commodities to their own children.  Many kids were left to grow up instead of being raised.  The single mothers who did work hard to raise their kids were outnumbered and incapable of teaching their children the male perspective.  A mother cannot teach a boy how to be a man any more than a father can teach a girl how to be a woman.  The value of raising children in a two parent home is incalculable.

Thanks to “progressive” social engineering, flash mobs now feel entitled to invade a Wal-Mart in Jacksonville FL and take what they want:

http://jacksonville.com/news/crime/2012-07-17/story/saturday-night-flash-mob-takes-over-jacksonville-wal-mart

Or in Troutdale OR:

http://www.kgw.com/news/Flash-mob-targets-Troutdale-Albertsons-store-159463245.html

What happened to the concepts of right and wrong, good and evil?  They are lost when there is no family to teach those values.  Yet “progressives” continue to cling to the idea that “it takes a village” to raise a child.  It looks like the village is doing a poor job.  Much as when a friend’s cold is brought home from school and introduced into the family, the “progressive” infection has spread through the family into society.

Now, “progressivism” has reached the highest levels of American government and threatens to destroy America’s exceptional ability to safeguard the individual’s God given Rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  Abortion runs rampant; big brother government flies spy drones over private property and frisks innocent airline passengers while “progressive” taxation and draconian regulations impede the pursuit of happiness.

It has reached the point where the current Oval Office occupant is telling business owners they owe their business success to government built infrastructure.  If two individuals start competing businesses across the street from each another and one succeeds while one fails, it is impossible for the government built infrastructure to have been a contributing variable, much less the deciding factor.  The business that fails doesn’t pay higher tax rates, but the one that succeeds does.  To Americans taught common sense family values, that is what’s known as punishing success.

Since the failure of his policies preclude showcasing them as a reason to choose him for a second term, the “progressive” Democratic candidate for president of the United States has pinned his re-election chances to defining his GOP opponent as an out of touch with the middle class rich guy.   His campaign blames former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney for the 2001 closure of GST Steel.   The truth is, Romney left Bain Capital in 1999 to save the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games and Jonathan Lavine was in charge of Bain during those GST layoffs.  Jonathan Lavine is bundling between $100,000 and $200,000 in contributions for the 2012 Obama Victory Fund.

It seems that the latch key kid from Hawaii by way of Chicago is unfamiliar with the concepts of good and evil, right and wrong, truth and lies, honor and dishonor, fairness and cheating.  It is obvious that the concept of winners and losers is not lost on someone willing to lie, cheat, steal and kill someone’s good reputation for the sake of winning.

This sort of winning through character assassination is more important than doing the job for which he obviously lusts.  Despite spending $878 billion to “stimulate” the economy, and unemployment remaining stuck at over 8% since he took office, his jobs council has not met in six months.

Not only has his Energy Department squandered billions of taxpayer dollars on failed “green” energy companies run by his political cronies, they are now unable to locate $500,000 in equipment that was paid for by some of that “stimulus” money.

While bludgeoning Romney with unproven allegations of “outsourcing” jobs overseas and championing his own “insourcing” by “saving GM” (note: George W. Bush loaned the money to GM in 2008), it somehow never gets mentioned that the heralded Chevy Volt makes no money, and that manufacturing it costs American taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars per car.

And what of the once great city of Detroit, home of GM and onetime center of the automotive world?  Plans to raze empty homes in Detroit are in their final stage.  After decades of “progressive” Democratic rule, Detroit, once a booming crown jewel of American industrial might is bulldozing itself to the ground.

This is how “progressives” roll.  Following their path leads to decay and destruction.  It matters not whether the damage inflicted is on decrepit homes or the cornerstone of civilization, the nuclear family.  It is still a dead end.

Wanna See A Breakdown In Society? Look No Further Than Your Nearest Grocery Store

While CDN is primarily considered to be a political website, I contend that mundane aspects of our culture can sometimes be a part of the equation that get overlooked.  One of the issue that’s been on my mind lately is how we treat each other publicly.  If the last couple of decades were known for being overly “P.C.”, then I fear this next decade could be the decade of “naked aggression” towards one another.

An act as simple as going grocery shopping has become stressful and unpleasant for many over the last few years.  Our fellow motorists on the road have long been a topic of discussion in our country, but now I see hostilities and conflict extending beyond the pavement and the stoplights.  Now the grocery store and even the parking lot itself seem to be unsafe havens in our world today.

Last Saturday, I began my (weekly) show, Married to the Game, with observations on what it’s like to go shopping in Southern California.  Below, I’ve combined some of that commentary with pictures and video that I took from a Walmart parking lot, both out of frustration and in an attempt to share with other people what I’ve been witnessing.  Ultimately, I’d love to get a conversation started in this country about how we can go back to better conducting ourselves and being “better citizens” in public.  But until then, you can find entertainment in my pain in this video below.

So what are your thoughts?  Am I just crying over misplaced shopping carts?  Are there bigger problems in the world?  Or is this video indicative of our “EBT” and “OWS” culture?

Also… In the video, I discuss how this has encouraged me to do more shopping online, thus costing local stores my business.  As more and more people seem to shop online, what effect do you think this has on our communities?

Let us know in the comments below. (or on Facebook)  This is a topic I believe we should all think more about.
