Krauthammer Again: ‘Obama’s Speech Was Flat With No Real Content’

For the third time this week, National Syndicated Columnist and Fox News contributor, had more than harsh words about President Barack Obama’s DNC acceptance speech given Thursday evening. He called it. “one of the emptiest speeches” ever given by a presidential nominee for a major party.

Charles Krauthammer on Special Report with Bret Baier

“I was stunned,” he said. “This is a man who gave one of the greatest speeches of our time in 2004, and he gave one of the emptiest speeches I have ever heard on a national stage.”

Krauthammer continued to say that, as in normal Obama fashion, the speech itself was good,  but there was no substance to it, concerning the actual content of the speech, which was given to thousands of delegates, politicians, and reporters at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C. We must note, that the skies were clear at the time of the Obama’s acceptance speech.

“Yes, it had cadence. And yes there were deceptions in it. That‘s not what’s striking about it,” he said. “There was nothing in it.”

He continued: “This is a man who believes that government can and should do a lot. There’s nothing in here that tells us how he is going to go from today to tomorrow. And what government is going to do, what’s he going to enact? At least Romney had a five-point plan.”

Krauthammer continued to drill Obama about how the president continues to present his personal agenda to the American people, but never has offered any real plan on how to get there.

“I have a vision of America where there is no disease and everyone has a private airplane, but unless I tell you how to get there, I’ve said nothing,” he added. “I am simply amazed — this is a guy who is the A student in the class who turns in a paper that is clearly a C.

Also, Vice President Joe Biden delivered his speech and Krauthammer commented that Biden’s speech was “infinitely better” than the president’s. “The Obama speech I thought was flat and had no content in it. Otherwise, I loved it really.”

30% Chance Of Rain Brings President’s Speech Indoors

Politico reports this morning:

“Democratic officials confirm to POLITICO that President Obama’s prime time address will be moved indoors to the Time Warner Center. The Thursday address was scheduled to be at Bank of America stadium — an outdoor venue with more than 70,000 seats. But forecasts are predicting thunderstorms, forcing a last minute change in venue.”

However, per the National Weather Service, Charlotte only has a 30% chance of thunderstorms tomorrow evening. This is weird considering the outdoor speech would be made “rain or shine”, but a 30% chance of scattered thunderstorms is enough to bring the event indoors.

Biden, Clinton Lunches Dismissed as ‘Routine’

With reports swirling around Washington that president Obama might put Secretary of State Clinton on the Democratic ticket in November instead of Joe Biden, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney dismissed those reports, and addressed the lunch meetings as ‘routine’. But is there anything really routine about this schedule?

The Real Question For Matt Damon, Jon Lovitz , and Ariana Huffington

Oh, how the mighty have fallen!

In the 2008, America elected “the biggest celebrity in the world“, Barack Obama. Oh yes, America, we got “one cool president!” However, that “cool” seems to be wearing off- even in Hollywood!

First, one of Obama’s strongest supporters in 2008 has now retracted his support of President Cool!  Matt Damon is quite disappointed in Obama, and, in a very strange turn of events, even complimented President George W. Bush for his progress on various AIDS initiatives. He went so far as to say he could kiss Dubya!

Then there’s the now famous rant from comedian Jon Lovitz, for which he is now being accused of threatening Obama. In a report from The Blaze, Jon Lovitz made an appearance on the Dr. Drew Pinsky show, Mr. Lovitz said of Obama:

“…he’s creating a class warfare in a country where there is no class structure. Anybody can go from being broke to being wealthy.”

In Mr. Lovitiz original tirade that sets the stage for the accusation from Dr. Pinsky, the comedian said:

“…I voted for the guy and I’m a Democrat.”

Finally, there is Ariana Huffington, co-founder of The Huffington Post. On Monday, Ms. Huffington made an appearance on CBS “This Morning”, where she said the “spiking the football” ad put out by the Obama campaign, which politicizes Osama bin Laden’s death, “is one of the most despicable things you can do.”

Many Americans who voted for Obama in the 2008 election have said they will not vote for him again. Now, celebrities are disappointed in President Cool.

So now the real question for Mr. Damon, Mr. Lovitz and Ms. Huffington is this:

Will you vote for Barack Obama in 2012? Or will you dare to cross over the “political line” and vote for Mitt Romney? Or will you simply stay home and not vote?

Obama's Energy Plan: Wind, Water & Algae for America's Future

President Obama unveiled his bold new energy strategy today before christening a Fulton steam barge in Flatbrush, Missouri upon the Mississippi River. The president stood atop a soap box and delivered an address while reading from a hand-cranked teleprompter especially designed to save energy.

Thousands of locals gathered to celebrate the carnival-like atmosphere, complete with waterwheel-driven Ferris wheels, windmill-powered carousels, and one-way roller coasters. The futuristic setting looked like a scene from the 1814 World’s Fair, if one had taken place.

Underneath a giant banner reading “Welcome to America’s Future!” throngs of men, women, and children noshed on funnel cakes and old-fashioned hot dogs.

“Today we usher in a bright new era,” the president began with an echo that trembled the mighty waters of the Mississippi, “one where Americans will no longer be beholden to big oil, scary nuclear, and king coal. We look forward with clear vision to a future where America is powered by steam, water and wind power.”

“Hoorah!” yelled the American people, who were warming towards the proposal.

“The heart of my Progressive Energy Plan is the switchover of our gasoline engines, coal-fired plants, and nuclear power facilities to steam engines, windmills, and waterwheels by 2046. Such a strategy will place America clearly at the forefront of technological change in the green energy field, far ahead of the gas-rich Russians and oil-heavy Saudis,” said President Obama.

The crowd burst into uncontrollable applause before the president was able to calm the people down through a casual flap of the arms.

“Now, some have called this plan foolish. They call steam power an impossibility, hydropower a fanciful dream, and wind power plain quixotic. They point to the failures of Europe and argue that green energy doesn’t work, won’t work, can’t work. But what is leadership but the ability to take the failures of others and turn them into dizzying success stories?”

People roared in agreement as they chewed on salted pretzels and stared spellbound at the dim multicolored lights, which seemed to cast a faint vermillion glow on the president’s face.

“Thank you, thank you,” Mr. Obama said, “But you haven’t heard the best part yet. Under my plan, families of four making under $25,372 a year will be eligible for the Light a Candle for Change tax subsidy. So if you buy candles, file those receipts with the Internal Revenue Service for a credit towards your tax liability.”

The crowd once again cheered in assent.

“And the grandest innovation of all…” Mr. Obama spoke and lingered for a moment to relish the tension. “Algae. We will replace our dependence on fossil fuels with clean, green renewable slime.”

Jaws dropped. Eyes widened. Ice cream cones fell to the ground.

“I know, I know,” the president said with a laugh. “I was astounded too when I found out about it last week.”

A hush fell over the audience.  As the winds stirred briskly through that Missouri town, and plastic hot dog wrappers were blowing through the dusty streets, it appeared indeed that the gods of fortune had once again smiled upon America, that they should be blessed with such an ingenious president.

The president waved his arm in triumph, signaling the end of his address and the ceremonial christening of the U.S.S. Foolproof. With a dash of his supple wrist, the president slammed the bottle of Dom Perignon against the stolid steamship, but to no avail. Repeatedly, the president dinged the champagne bottle against the stubborn hull. Mercifully, Michelle Obama snatched the bottle from the president’s hand and shattered it against the bough.

“Heh, heh,” the president laughed, “Just a few technical difficulties. Nothing to worry about. Now, everybody go on board and do some riverboat gambling. It’s on me.”

Married To The Game Mar 17th: Apple, The Primary, And Your Introduction To SooperMexican

This weekend’s show was a little more informal than most.  We discussed what it’s like to be an Apple computer owner for the first time, and we touched a little bit on Apple’s performance in the market (as the world’s most valuable company).  We discussed the differences between the Verizon and AT&T iPads (yup there’s actually some differences).

We talked about Osama Bin Laden’s opinion of Joe Biden.

We talked about the “Stop Kony” narrator walking around naked in BROAD DAYLIGHT.

We talked about the Tom Hanks narrated campaign ad for Barack Obama.

And you got to/get to meet the multitalented @SooperMexican.  If you haven’t met Sooper Mex before, he’s quite a handful.  He’s a firecracker, even.  He runs his own website, SooperMexican.com, and he also happens to be an artist who’s contributed to MisfitPolitics.co.  He’s VERY outspoken on Twitter and has been known to ruffle feathers (mine included), but he’s a passionate conservative, and someone you should really give a chance.

Plus many more topics that were peppered in.  You’ll just have to listen right here.  (or in the player below)

Obama’s Hypocrisy Exposed (Again)

This excellent video points out two cases of delicious irony in one fell swoop.  Our president has recently called Sandra Fluke to let her know that he doesn’t approve of meanies like Rush Limbaugh calling her a “slut” while simultaneously taking $1 million (via super pac) from Bill Maher.  (who “unapologetically” calls Sarah Palin a C_NT)   The Irony Police are looking over the report to see which smacks more of hypocrisy:  His condemnation of Limbaugh while glossing over remarks by Maher.  Or his sudden change of heart when it comes to embracing Super PACs.  Anyone else remember when he scolded the Supreme Court for the Citizens United decision?  (h/t @red_red_head on Twitter)

Occupy Wall Street Hates Black People: A Satire (sort of)

Occupy Wall Street is racist.  The whole Occupy movement is racist.  This big movement (BM from this point on) is nothing more than a bunch of spoiled rich White people who have decided they’ve had enough of a Black man in office.  They are filled with rage at the thought of some uppity ni**er coming to Washington and messing with their money.  Oh sure, it was fine and dandy when he was just a figurehead, just a token voted into to office so White America could prove they aren’t racists anymore; but then he started doing stuff.  He killed jobs with a “green energy” mandate that specifically targeted the coal industry for bankruptcy.  He gave stimulus money to his crony capitalist friends and he purposefully left Guantanamo Bay open after promising to go down there and lock the doors for good all by himself.  After an international apology tour designed to reassure our global neighbors that America is not special and will renounce violence from now on, forever and ever – this Black President killed Osama Bin Laden in cold blood.  Obviously White America decided they’d had enough of his rogue President.  As along as he stayed in line he was fine…but making his own plans, without the approval of his masters? Unforgivable.

Oh sure, the BM uses as its cover the idea that they are fed up with capitalist greed and corporate welfare, but that’s just a ruse to detract from their real problem.  After all, Obama’s largest campaign contributors are major corporations such as GE and wealthy Hollywood 1%ers like Will and Jada Smith.  So rest assured, anytime the BMers use the phrase “corporate greed” they really mean “darkie President”.  Its a fact.

We also know this BM is racist because of the horrific, sick signs on display at BM protests around the country.  Many of the signs use vile, racist terms that have not been regularly used since the civil rights era.  If BMers had their way, America would return to Jim Crow and uppity Black folk everywhere would take their rightful places once again at the back of the bus.  The offensive signs that have been popping up at protests around the country show a very white, very racist undercurrent of rage.  Of course we don’t have pictures or footage of these signs, but there have been reports…unsubstantiated, eyewitness reports.  Many of the reports have come from those who identify as politically conservative and say they oppose the BM.  Unfortunately, no one has thought to get a picture of or point a news crew toward these sickening displays of racism, but we know its true, because we know the whole BM is racist, and we know they’re racist because they’re mostly White, and they were nowhere to be found as long as America was governed by White men.

Perform a quick Google Image search of protests from around the country and it becomes glaringly obvious that the BM hates Black people.  Besides a few tokens peppered here and there- in order give them credibility- it is nearly impossible to ignore the fact that these crowds are largely made up  of White people…racist, bigoted White people.  Occupy Wall Street seems to be the most “diverse” of the BMs.  The first Black people I saw in my image search came 3 searches in on the Occupy Wall Street search, and it was a picture of Russell Simmons and Kanye West, noted 99%ers and Uncle Toms.

On top of all this madness there have even been reports of protesters at Occupy D.C. shouting racial epithets at the White House and spitting on members of the Congressional Black Caucus while calling them ni**ers as they walked into the capital building.  Again, no footage or pictures have been found, but there is little doubt the reports are true.  One only needs to look at a picture of an Occupy protest to know that its true.  Truth needs no evidence or facts.  Truth needs no research.  Truth only needs one person to say its true, and then it is.  That’s in the Constitution.  I heard it at an Occupy Denver general assembly.  Uptwinkles!

When will America wake up to the divisive, hateful, vitriolic rhetoric of this terrifyingly racist BM?  When will the media stop covering for these bigots and release their hours upon hours of footage of protesters shouting the n-word over and over again and beating up Black people indiscriminately?  With all the proof that has been laid out its time that sane Americans fight back against this evil rage.  Its time expose the true goal of the Occupy Wall Street BM: to remove that Black man from office and set things right again.

To Kill a Mockingbird – The Lynching of Herman Cain

Fifty one years after Harper Lee penned “To Kill a Mockingbird”, we are watching the same story played out in real life. Truth may be as strange as fiction after all.

Harper Lee’s novel, set in Maycomb Alabama during the depression, tells the story of two children and the lessons they learned as their father, attorney Atticus Finch, defended an innocent black man accused of sexually assaulting a white woman.

To watch the media feeding frenzy surrounding Herman Cain of late, I cannot help but be reminded of the American classic tale written by Lee.

From the 1962 movie, perhaps we will remember Mr. Finch’s Jury summation: “To begin with, this case should never have come to trial. The state has not produced one iota of medical evidence that the crime Tom Robinson is charged with ever took place… It has relied instead upon the testimony of two witnesses, whose evidence has not only been called into serious question on cross-examination, but has been flatly contradicted by the defendant. Now, there is circumstantial evidence to indicate that Mayella Ewel was beaten – savagely, by someone who led exclusively with his left. And Tom Robinson now sits before you having taken the oath with the only good hand he possesses… his RIGHT. I have nothing but pity in my heart for the chief witness for the State. She is the victim of cruel poverty and ignorance. But my pity does not extend so far as to her putting a man’s life at stake, which she has done in an effort to get rid of her own guilt.”

While this doesn’t quite apply to Herman Cain, because there is not even circumstantial evidence in his case, the attitude of the left, particularly in the Media, and most particularly on MSNBC seems to be identical.

In her novel, Harper Lee says of racial prejudice, “As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it – whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash. “ (Atticus Finch)

As I listened to MSNBC’s Morning Joe Tuesday morning, they discussed Herman Cain. After Donny Deutsch described the GOP race as a vaudeville show, and one must wonder does he REALLY want to go there, black-face make-up and all, he goes on to describe Mr. Cain’s top rating in the polls at 20% to 23% as “people just wanting the show to go on, and if Mr. Cain goes away, there is no show.” When discussing Herman Cain’s pause answering a question about his agreement or disagreement with President Obama on the handling of Libya, Mike Barnicle said that Herman Cain is a joke. Mr. Barnicle should have listened to the rest of the answer, which as Howard Dean said, was the correct one. After gathering his thoughts, Herman Cain responded that he was not privy to all of the information about the situation in Libya and who the rebels were. We still don’t know exactly who the rebels are, but we do know now, that they want to impose Sharia Law in that country. They may well be Al-Qaeda jihadists for all we really know. The “clowns” in the room (as Barnicle referred to the GOP field) really seem to be the commentators on MSNBC who, like Mr. Cunningham and the other residents gathered outside the Maycomb Alabama courthouse seem intent on a lynching. Why are they so afraid of a strong principled black man. And like Mr. Cunningham, do they need an 8 year old Scout to hold a mirror to their prejudice and shame them back to their hovels.

After calling Mr. Cain “Stupid”, fortunately without the epithet, Mika Brzezinski then smirked about Mr. Cain’s offer of the Secretary of State job to Henry Kissinger, and his refusal of it. Cain said that Kissinger declined because he did not wish to come out of retirement. Cain said he was grateful that the former Secretary spent some time with him and answered questions about the middle east. If seeking counsel on foreign policy from one of the most respected and knowledgeable statesman in modern times is stupid, one wonders what brilliant might be. One has to expect that the daughter of Jimmy Carter’s National Security Advisor would be a little left leaning, but one would hope she would show a little intelligence and insight.

Why all the Cain bashing from the left? As Ms. Harper’s novel points out, “Why reasonable people go stark raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up, is something I don’t pretend to understand.”

Maybe it can’t be understood, but it seems possible that the left, with it’s long, long history of truly renown racists like George Wallace, Woodrow Wilson, Bull Connor, Robert Byrd, and Stephan Douglas among others, can bury an attitude so deeply that they don’t even notice it. It seems equally possible that, by what psychologists might call projection, it is impossible for the left to fathom a GOP that is truly colorblind. Perhaps they cannot see that the bulk of the Republican party, and particularly the Tea Party took to heart Dr. King’s dream, that we do judge a man, not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character. That certainly would explain why Tina Brown, Mika Brzezinski, Mike Barnicle and their ilk are having such a hard time understanding why Herman Cain remains at the top of the Iowa polls, and why they must use personal ridicule to attack him, rather than try to joust in the arena of ideas.

More stereotypes have been thrown around by the political pundits, particularly on MSNBC than have been heard in decades. What’s worse, they have completely ignored the recent heinous acts of Anti-semitic vandalism and mayhem in Crown Heights, as well as the anti-Jewish rhetoric being spewed by some of those lovely souls attending Occupations about the nation.

While they smirk, and joke and impune, perhaps they have failed to realize that our once great nation is declining rapidly into chaos. We have no leadership in the halls of Governance, our freedoms are being usurped as the regulatory agencies attempt to enslave us to the nanny state, our economy is near ruin, our youth have no work ethic, no values and no sense of responsibility. Our financial institutions behave recklessly while those in oversight line their pockets. And rather than debate policy, rather than seek men and women with real ideas about how to extricate ourselves from the weeds and point this once mighty ship of state back toward the main channel, we should laugh and poke fun about how long it takes for a man of honor to answer a question? In what kind of insane world do we find ourselves? Should we seek the white rabbit and a bite of the cake which reads eat me?

Mr. Cain is an honest man, with good ideas who cares about America and the direction in which this nation is headed. Who could blame him if he took up his hat and went home, yet here he is, offering his leadership to a leaderless Republic. Kick him if you wish, but do so at your soul’s and your nation’s peril.

Lou Dobbs: Obama Is A Hypocrite Socialist

This weekend, Lou Dobbs was asked how he felt about our president’s huuuuuuuuge flip flop when it comes to dealing with congress.  When Barack Obama was the jr. senator from Illinois, he seemed to think the president (Bush) should not try to override congress.  Then he became president, himself, and decided he “can’t wait” to deal with congress, so he’ll just enact policies on his own. (without congress)  Lou Dobbs talked about this hypocrisy, and then he worked in a mention of “socialism” somehow. (gotta love Uncle Lou)

What do you guys think?  Is the president a hypocrite?  Is this all Bush’s fault?  Was Lou right to discuss socialism in this context?  And how much money should the Koch brothers being paying me, because I think they’re ripping me off.

Taxpayer $ Spent On Obama Memoir. AWESOME!!!

Yesterday, a fellow CDN writer told you that our State Department had spent about $70,000 on copies of Barack Obama’s book, “Dreams of My Father”.  What do I think about that?  I think it’s GREAT.  I’m laughing so hard I could cry as I think about it, and I’ll tell you why…

From what I can tell, these books were bought for our U.S. embassies that we have scattered across the globe.  I decided to google “Do U.S. embassies have books?” in an effort to understand why we would be purchasing copies of Obama’s memoir for them.  It turns out that we have libraries in some of these things (embassies).  Below is a picture of what I found on one of the embassies in India’s website.

So it turns out that we have books (and libraries) in our embassies across the world.  As I thought of this, I had a somewhat evil idea cross my mind.  See… there are nearly 7 billion people on earth, and only 300 million of them are from the United States.  The rest (over 6 billion) are from various nations and continents.  And as crazy as it might sound, a lot of people on this earth don’t have the greatest appreciation for the United States, Anglo-Saxons, or anything that looks like colonialism.   As it turns out, they do, however, have an appreciation for an American President (with a Kenyan father) who grew up in Indonesia.

It crossed my mind that Obama’s book, “Dreams of My Father”, might actually be a brilliant marketing tool to have in our embassies.  And… it can even have a “Walt Disney effect”.  When you go to Disney Land, you can go to the gift store and (I assume) find a book that details how awesome Disney was, and it gives you a reason to feel like his amusement park was a good thing.  So… I imagine it helps us to have books in our embassies that feature a guy who doesn’t even seem to like America as our president.  Obama’s life story and his disposition towards America send a subliminal message to other countries.  I’m not sure that it’s one that *I* particularly appreciate, but it’s one that might resonate with young people in other parts of the world.  Basically, his book (which really “seems” to hate white people) might ultimately do us a favor in some of our foreign embassies.  I could be wrong, but it seems like having these books at American embassies might actually help us.

So before we decry the spending of $70,000 (of our hard earned tax money) on some crappy books, we should ask ourselves… “Could this actually help us in the long run?  Could it be useful to have foreigners read a book that illustrates how an ‘America-hater’ became the leader of the greatest country on earth?”.

What do you guys think?  Is $70,000 even enough money to worry about?  Or is it absolutely absurd that tax money should be used to purchase books written by our president?  Or… is this much to do about nothing?  Let us know in the comments below.  Or you can tell us on Facebook.  We’re pretty flexible like that.

Herman Cain Speaks the Truth on Abortion

Herman Cain got into some hot water the other night on the Peirs Morgan show over his comments on abortion. Mr. Cain’s problem is one that I find quite refreshing, he tells the truth.

The truth about abortion, such as it is, is that ultimately it is the mother who will make that choice, just as Mr. Cain said. They were making it long before Roe v. Wade, and they will make it long after Roe v. Wade is overturned, if it ever is.

The context of Mr. Morgan’s question was, to this author’s hearing, under current law. He asked Mr. Cain what he would do if his granddaughter was the victim of a rape and had become pregnant. Mr. Cain replied that the choice was ultimately up to the family involved.

Cain released a statement the following day in which he said “As to my political policy view on abortion, I am 100% pro-life. End of story. I will appoint judges who understand the original intent of the Constitution. Judges who are committed to the rule of law know that the Constitution contains no right to take the life of unborn children.

I will oppose government funding of abortion. I will veto any legislation that contains funds for Planned Parenthood. I will do everything that a President can do, consistent with his constitutional role, to advance the culture of life.”

In truth, the only choice the government can make about abortion is whether it is done safely and legally, or in a back alley as it was before the Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade. If the other candidates don’t understand that it is because they believe in a fantasy land where the law is universally obeyed. It would be nice if that were the case, but to see the reality, one only needs to look at how successful we have been in the war on drugs. The ultimate choice to take illegal drugs still lies with the individual.

It is extremely refreshing to have a candidate who understands the real world, and how it works. It is refreshing to hear him speak honestly about that world. The crowd inside the beltway seems to lack Cain’s insight, and the result is that they pass law after law with horrendous unintended consequences and seem utterly unable to see it. Herman Cain is a real man for a real America.

Apple Knows How To Generate Revenue; Why Doesn't Our Government?

In light of the recent revelation that Steve Jobs told Barack Obama that he’s on his way to being a “one term president”, I thought I would share something with you that I originally posted on AiPolitics.me.  In it, I discuss how our politicians lack creativity when it comes to generating revenue, and that over-taxing us is not the way to go about improving our fortunes.

There’s been a story circulating lately that’s caught more traction than I thought it would.  You’ve probably heard it.  It’s the story of how Apple has more money than the U.S. government.  I’ve considered it a non-story, because the government makes (and spends) more money in fifteen days than Apple has after a decade of hard work.  So… I haven’t paid it much mind, but the story still persists.

And while I still believe it is, in fact, a non-story, I have realized that it contains a valuable lesson about “revenue”.  You see, our nation is in a rut when it comes to this subject; it’s as if we’ve simply run out of imagination.  And that’s sad, because imagination has long been one of our strongest exports.  But I digress… (sorry for beginning so many sentences with connecting words by the way)

Revenue is the life blood of any society.  In simple terms, “revenue” is money.  In broader terms, revenue is roads, hospitals, and air conditioning.  (blessed are those who have air conditioning)  Even if you hate capitalism, you need revenue.  The Soviet Union didn’t have enough of it, and the Berlin Wall came down.  Incidentally, Germany is doing quite well these days.  Revenue is how I see my family that is thousands of miles away from me.  Revenue is how we got to the moon.  Revenue is how you are reading this right now.  There is no free lunch, free ride, or free internet.  It all costs money.  And money is revenue.

So how do we get it?  There are various ideas of how to do that, but the proof is in the pudding.  The countries with the most financial resources almost always use capitalism or have a free market mechanism of some sort.  The countries where people die of thirst and have no food generally have a poor mechanism for generating revenue, but still they employ deficient techniques so long as the dictators have mansions or palaces.  (with air conditioning, of course)  But… this piece is not about the promotion of free markets; it’s about revenue.

So again, I ask, how do we get it?  Well, if you ask our current politicians (most of them Democrats), they would tell you that we raise taxes.  They equate raising taxes to creating revenue.  And in a sense, they are correct.  If you charge more for a product, you will get more money per product, therefore you should have more money at the end of the day.  But… That’s not how life works.  Usually when you make things more expensive, fewer people buy them, so at the end of the day, you can actually have LESS money in your coffers.  Think about it:  Is Walmart the biggest retail chain in the world, or is Neiman Marcus?  Volume usually wins at the end of the day.

So what does this all have to do with Apple?  Apple updated their operating system for their Mac computers earlier this month.  And by “update”, I mean they created a whole new product.  The new operating system is leaps and bounds more sophisticated than the previous (and popular) one.  Typically, an operating system is worth every penny of $100-$200, and that’s the price that is generally charged.  Apple is in a unique situation.  They sell almost every piece of equipment they make, and their fans are generally quick to adopt their new software.  If Apple charged $100 for Lion (their new operating system), it would sell like gangbusters.  But… they didn’t.  They sold it for thirty bucks.  You read that right.  The software that makes their insanely popular computers so popular retails for $29.99.

Do you want to know why Apple has more money on hand than the U.S. government?  If Barack Obama headed Apple, and not Steve Jobs, Lion would sell for $200.  Don’t believe me?  Look how much Microsoft sells Windows 7 Professional for.  It retails for $199.99.

And that’s what I mean when I say our politicians lack imagination.  Our government wants to tax people and make things more expensive in an effort to raise their revenues, when there are other ways to make money.  Drilling in our coast would be a great start.  Which makes more sense?  Taxing gasoline more so that we drive less (therefore we shop less and do less commerce in general, thus costing revenue), or drilling in the coast?  If you drill, then the oil companies get taxed every step of the way from the equipment they use to how they distribute the oil to the profit they make on it.  That’s a lot of revenue we are missing out on.  Then the gas stations sell more gallons (each being taxed, thus generating revenue), and the more trips people make to the gas station, the more likely it is they are going to buy additional products from there (which all get taxed, generating revenue).

I’m telling you folks that volume wins.  Ask Apple.  Ask Walmart.  Ask the “old” United States.  Volume wins everyday, every time.  So why do we limit our volume?  To paraphrase @IowaHawkBlog, “Sell more tacos; don’t charge more for them”.

So even if if I originally thought of this as a non-story, there’s still a lesson to be learned.  Apple knows how to generate revenue, and it’s sad that our government does not.

What (currently) unexplored ways of making revenue do you think our government is missing out on.  Let me know in the comments below.  Maybe we can send some suggestions to Washington.
