Happy American Dream Day?

Most of you know today as Labor Day. What exactly is Labor Day? Sounds like a day to celebrate work, but it isn’t. Maybe it’s a day where we celebrate the ability for women to give birth? Nope, not that either.

Labor Day isn’t just a day off with pay. And it’s not BBQ at the beach or a celebration of the end of summer.

Actually, it’s a day for us to celebrate workers. But who really loves to work? Wouldn’t most people love to have enough money not to have to work? So, why do we celebrate the American worker?

Originally, Labor Day was an olive branch extended by President Grover Cleveland after he sent American troops in to stop the railroad workers strike and 12 workers were killed in the process. He gave them a day off (with pay?) to let things settle down. Cleveland’s olive branch withered and the celebration died away.

I appreciate the sacrifices that the American worker has made over the years to feed their families, buy homes and cars, provide their children’s education, and make a good life. But isn’t that what the American Dream is all about?

In the early days of America we had many shameful moments. Workers were taken advantage of. Working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, being replaced permanently if they were out sick a day or two, and even plant workers being beaten for not working hard enough. Barbaric!

But that was then. America has come a long way. I’ll even give the unions credit for helping to make working conditions fair and give workers some protections. But somewhere along the way, like with any big corporation that disconnects from its people, they went bad. Yes, bad.

Workers’ salaries shouldn’t be based on what the company makes, it should be based on a fair days wage for a good days work. In most cases, the worker doesn’t lose his investments, 20 years of sweat, his home and cars if the company goes out of business. Business entrepreneurs very often do! Workers can usually get a job in the same industry. There is no real risk being an employee.

The owner of the company usually puts up his house, his name, his reputation, and all his assets to borrow money to start the company up and running. It’s the entrepreneur that comes up with the idea, figures out how to produce it, figures out how to bring it to market, and figures out how to make a profit on it so he can hire the laborer. Then the laborer can show up do his job, feed his family, afford a house, and so on. Once in a while, one of those workers rises up, figures out how to do it better, starts their own company, and becomes an entrepreneur. That’s the real American dream… freedom to make money to live comfortably after hard work and ingenuity! Sadly, that’s also what the unions seem to hate the most, entrepreneurs.

It’s unclear who the brainchild behind Labor Day was. Many credit Labor Day to Peter J. McGuire, cofounder of the American Federation of Labor. Others have suggested that Matthew Maguire, a secretary of the Central Labor Union, first proposed the holiday. Either way, it was union officials making a big deal out of union workers.

What about all the other American workers? Maybe we could rename it to “American Dream Day” and celebrate the fact that we have the freedom choose our profession and where we work. We can choose to start our own business, to own a house and a car, to get a good education, and to move freely about the country. Yes, we can simply work for someone and enjoy the American Dream.

Let’s celebrate the American worker and the American entrepreneur, not just union workers.

Anyone can make it in this country… anyone! No excuses. You make it or you fail because of your ability, your tenacity, and how bad you want it and are willing to work for it.

I don’t celebrate the union worker, I celebrate all Americans who work hard to obtain the American Dream and “make it big” and those who work hard to enjoy the freedoms they have here. Happy American Dream Day!

The Classless Community Organizer Strikes Again

On this past Saturday of the Labor Day weekend that generally marks the end of summer in America, President Obama was in full community/union organizing mode during a speech he gave in Detroit. In an article at TheHill.com, Obama previews jobs plan, warns Republicans against ‘more games’, In that article citing direct quotes from his speech,  we get a glimpse of just how nasty and uncivil Obama and the Democrats are becoming leading up to the 2012 elections where they are slated to receive another historic beat-down due to their far Liberal agenda of the past four plus years. While the elections are still over a year away, Liberals and their fearless leader, Barack Obama are acting more like rabid attack dogs than the “new civil discourse champions” they demanded after Rep. Gabby Giffords was shot.

Barack Obama is the head of the Liberal Party USA today, and how he goes, so go the fake Democrats of Congress. Like a bunch of drones incapable of independent thought, most Democrats rely on parroting Obama’s words, or repeating his talking points memos verbatim. Keeping that in mind, we can easily deduce the democratic talking points for this week as Congress reconvenes and prepares for Obama’s upcoming supposed new jobs creation plan speech.  A few excerpts from Obama’s speech as noted in the above-mentioned article from The Hill:

Blame it all on Republicans, although the fake Democrats have been running roughshod over Congress for over the last four-plus years:

“We’re going to see if we’ve got some straight-shooters in Congress,” Obama said. “We’re going to see if congressional Republicans will put country before party.”

I would have to ask the President if he has been living in a cave in Pakistan for the last five years when he makes statements like this, that show him to be so far out of touch with reality as to try to deny what his Liberal spending Party has done to America.  FYI- Barack, your fake Democrats are directly responsible for massive amounts of national debt since 2008 when they took over Congress. To be precise,  Obama and his Liberal Party have slapped slap more debt onto the backs of  American citizens and their children in under fours years than GWB and Republicans did in eight! Obama himself called this massive debt increase “unpatriotic,” back in 2008 when he was community organizing for the office of president:

To quote Barack the candidate: “The problem is, is that the way Bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion for the first 42 presidents – #43 added $4 trillion by his lonesome, so that we now have over $9 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back — $30,000 for every man, woman and child. That’s irresponsible. It’s unpatriotic.” ( emphasis added)

Considering that the very same credit card from the bank of China Obama referred to back in 2008 is now pushing $15 trillion dollars, perhaps he should talk to his very own Democratic Party in congress about putting country before politics? Show some class Mr. President, and accept responsibility for you and your parties actions for once. Did U.S Senate majority leader, Liberal puppet Harry Reid ( pictured with you above) get the memo on putting country before politics? It sure doesn’t look like it, considering how he failed to act on the Transportation funding bill that the House had passed over three months ago, leading us down the path to another manufactured government crisis by your fake Democratic Party.

Threatening to bypass Congress once again the constitution be damned: Obama said he is hopeful that Republicans will join him in looking for ways to create jobs, but he warned “we’re not gonna wait for them.”  In plain English, that means either Republicans will line up at the feeding trough with Obama’s Liberals and continue to spend America into insolvency, or he will do so by executive fiat, no votes in Congress needed. It is always very informative to publish President Obama’s Union-pandering speeches, as they generally expose his true agenda of more spending and debt, and always include his tired rhetoric of blaming Republicans while ignoring the truth.

Taxpayers lost $1.3 billion dollars in the bailout of Chrysler , yet Obama and his Union pals called this a huge success Saturday:

“We stood by the auto industry and we made some tough choices that were necessary to succeed,” he said. “And now the Big Three is turning a profit and hiring workers and building the best cars, right here in Detroit, right here in the Midwest, right here in the United States of America.”

If Chrysler is such a success today and turning profits, how about making them pay back the treasury that $1.3 billion dollars Mr. President? Maybe your Liberal party will put the country before politics and work with Republicans in demanding your Union vote-buying pals pay us back in full during this session of Congress? By the way, when talking about the big three auto companies in Detroit turning profits today, how is the vaunted Chevy volt doing?  Not so well, as we see here:  Hard Times For the Chevy Volt  .  Now there is talk about a possible Union strike by the UAW which may only apply to Ford Motor Company, whom just happens to be the only one of the big three not currently run by the Unions in bed with the U.S. government: Ford Is Most Vulnerable Without Strike Ban as Union Talks Open.

Ford Motor Co., the most profitable U.S. carmaker, heads into contract talks with the United Auto Workers next week in the worst position among the
companies. Because Ford didn’t take a government bailout, it lacks two weapons rivals have: binding arbitration and a ban on strikes.(emphasis added)

President Obama’s Union-pandering speech on Labor Day weekend this past Saturday is being touted as some kind of a preview about his much-anticipated, “I will save America” jobs speech to be given to both houses of Congress this week.  Show some class Mr. President, and start with a statement that truly exemplifies what has transpired in America during your term as President and start your jobs speech with the following statement of truth:

” The big spending, big government expansion carried out on my orders to the far left Liberal party USA will continue for 2 more years whether or not the U.S. Congress or the people approve. Just like when we used illegal methods to pass my historic Obama-care that will lead to the destruction of the best health-care system in the world, while it was  against the wishes of over 70% of the people, we really did not care what you people wanted then, nor do we care what you want in the next two years. We will continue to ignore the U.S Constitution and the rule of law to ramrod oppressive wealth redistributive laws onto the backs of the workers of America in order to empower the Liberal Party and their vote-buying Union cronies for decades to come. “

Show some class Mr. President and start your jobs speech with some of the above-mentioned truth which includes a healthy dose of that vaunted, “Change we can believe in” campaign slogan you used to inject yourself as our President. Act like the President of the greatest nation on earth, instead of a classless community organizer on the perpetual campaign trail. Is that too much to ask for today?

Laborious Day… Or… The Behavior of Slugs

Ahh, Labor Day! The first Monday in September. The unofficial end of summer (tell that to those of us south of the Mason-Dixon line). It’s a time to fire up the grill, spend time with family and, of course, reflect on the reason for the season – labor unions.

Granted, back in the day, working conditions were not so good for the uneducated laborer. Twelve hour work days, six day work weeks, no vacation or sick leave – conditions were often unsanitary and unsafe. Because of America’s massive push towards industrialization, workers were left with little rights. Many companies became big fat bureaucratic slugs and failed to treat their labor force with the dignity and respect they deserved.

Thus, the labor union was created. For many industrial workers, it was a godsend, protecting them from the big bureaucratic slugs. The strength in numbers and threats to strike gave them the power they had never had before. Unions could stand toe to toe with big industries. In a sense it was the first version of MAD – mutually assured destruction. Unions could cripple a company with a strike but ran the risk of mass firings. Industries could call their bluff and lay off the entire workforce but then they risked financial hari-kari.

The little guy was finally being protected. The unions stood up for the individuals against the big fat bureaucratic slugs. All was right in the world, the peasants rejoiced.

Fast forward 130 years – there are still big fat companies, but now we have a new slug – big fat labor unions. Somewhere along the way most, if not all of these labor unions – the defenders of freedom, the protectors of the innocent (Cue Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man”) – turned into the very thing they were fighting – big fat bureaucratic slugs who take advantage of their members for their own political gain.

Lest we be rude, we cannot leave out the third and largest member of the slug family – the federal government. If there is any force on this earth that can out-slug big business and big labor unions, it’s big government! The government is the largest slug by far and evidently has no problems having incestuous relations with it’s two slug cousins. All the while, the people who these three slugs have sworn to protect – the laborer, the customer and the citizen – are being crushed under the weight of the big fat bureaucratic slug trio.

So the moral of the story? What made America great from her birth are the radical, yet powerful philosophies of individualism and small government. Whether it is a particular company or industry, a labor union or a governing body, the result is the same. If you allow it to become too large, bloated and uncaring, it will be more of a hindrance than help.

There was a time and place for labor unions. But the lean, mean, fighting machines have turned into big fat slobs who are only interested in getting a bigger piece of the pie for themselves, not for their members. The government is not for the people, by the people and of the people if they have become so large that they can’t see the harm that they are doing. And a company that only sees the bottom line and does not look out for the welfare of their customers and their workers will not last.

I suppose it is fitting on this Labor Day that Jimmy Hoffa himself would call for his political opponents to be “taken out”. This, he said, at a rally that included a president that has signed into law over $4 trillion of deficit spending in only 2 1/2 years. Two big slugs – their big slug arms wrapped around each other, singing their slug songs, feeding at the trough of those they have sworn to protect….. does anyone have a really big saltshaker??!!
