Government Motors & Close Enough for Government Work

GM revolving workshopTimes have been tough at Government Motors. For a while there it looked like both Osama and GM were going to be dead after encountering the Obama regime. Just recently GM announced the recall of 8,200,000 vehicles over problems with faulty ignition switches. When added to earlier North American recalls, the total for 2014 is an astounding 29,000,000 cars and trucks.

This is almost three times the 9,710,000 vehicles GM managed to sell in 2013.

At this rate soon the only place to find GM cars will be in transportation museums. Total expenses so far for this year’s recall are $2.5 billion. So far the recalls have burned up almost two–thirds of the last year’s $3.8 billion profit. One or two more recalls and GM CEO Mary Barra will be waiting outside the Oval Office for another bail out.

But enough about GM, customers are being hit hard, too. It’s been decades since owning a Detroit car meant joint custody with the dealership’s service department. Buyers are accustomed to having their cars waiting in the driveway and not parked in the diagnostic center like a preemie, with various techs hovering about the machinery while anxious parents await a verdict.

That’s why I was encouraged to learn that GM intends to radically reshape the ownership experience so it will reflect modern Detroit manufacturing reality. Establishing realistic expectations on the part of the customer — expectations that GM knows it can meet or exceed — is an important part of reestablishing credibility with customers.

Details won’t be announced until next month, but a source inside the company has leaked this news release to me and I’ve pasted it below, with a few redactions for the sake of privacy.

General Motors Announces New Foster Car™ Model for Automobile Ownership

(Detroit, MI) General Motors Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra announced today that GM is breaking away from the restrictive ‘ownership’ model of automobile sales and will instead establish a more ‘open’ customer/manufacturer relationship based on the foster care model.

“The recalls of the past few months have been hard on both General Motors and our loyal customer base,” Ms. Barra explained. “The tearful goodbyes as customers deliver their beloved GM products to the service bay, or watch as one of our GM Neighborhood Recall flatbed trucks loads the auto, are emotionally wrenching for both our loyal owners and GM service personnel.

“To say nothing of the occasional hurried calls to 9–1–1 as emotions got the best of some of our more impassioned customers. What’s more, the expenses associated with a nationwide network of grief counselors was becoming burdensome and has a sharp impact on the bottom line.

“That’s why I’m proud to announce today that General Motors is breaking the mold and instituting a new ‘Foster Car’ ™ program that will still provide mostly reliable GM transportation without the emotional commitment of actual ownership.”

In practice the only difference families will notice between foster care of a child and foster care of a car will be that instead of the government paying you to take the child into your home, the family will pay GM a monthly fee to have the car in their garage.

Foster care families are always aware that fostering a child is a temporary situation that can spiral out of control on very short notice, much like the ownership experience with a General Motors product. And the relationship is always subject to rapidly changing government rules and obscure regulations, unevenly enforced by bored bureaucrats.

Foster Car ™will be almost the same. Foster families will only pay GM during those months when they have full possession of the automobile. During a recall there will be no charge and when the car or truck is upgraded to generally prevailing government standards, it will be returned with a full tank of gas. *

Foster Car ™ will differ from a lease in that there is no specified duration for the arrangement. Variables regarding whether or not any one vehicle model will be recalled, how many times it will be recalled and when a Foster Car ™family will want a new vehicle are simply impossible to predict. This flexible model will also prevent families from forming an unnaturally strong bond with the vehicle.

R. E. Call, Vice President of Engineering, believes the Foster Car ™to be a forward–thinking response to GM manufacturing realities, “In the past we’ve avoided large recalls. We felt the tradeoff between inconveniencing millions of owners just to prevent something bad happening to an unlucky few, simply wasn’t worth it.”

That policy has been changed under CEO Barra.

For the customers who still own GM vehicles outright and are waiting for their number in the latest recall drive to come up, Call suggests taking precautions to make sure their ignition switch does not spontaneously shut down. He recommends drivers remove any extra weight from the key ring holding the ignition key. This includes charms, lucky coins, rings, flashlights, small knives, beer–bottle openers and key tags with barcodes.

GM recognizes that removing these items will leave the vast majority of Americans unable to take advantage of frequent buyer programs or identify themselves at grocery stores, drug stores, public libraries and bagel emporiums, but ‘Safety First!’™ is now a byword at General Motors.

*Customers participating in the program are cautioned to remove all personal items from a recalled vehicle. Due to the increasing size of GM recalls, the company does not commit to returning the same vehicle that was sent back.

U.N. Assistance requested for Detroit water bills: what it really means

Detroit asks for United Nations help

Detroit asks for United Nations helpNews agencies across the continent today reported that more than half of Detroit’s residents were refusing to pay their water bills. In response, the politicos have requested the United Nations to intervene.

Now, a collection of activists has requested that the United Nations aid Detroit citizens who are being left without access to water.

While access to the necessities of life are certainly a basic human right, getting them without work, effort, payment or any measure of .. well .. anything .. is NOT!

Many of the residents are actually choosing not to pay their bills as Detroit Water Department Spokesperson Curtrise Garner said, “once we shut water off, the next day they are in paying the bill in full.” That’s strange, they aren’t destitute, they just were using the money for other things until someone threatened to take away the water.

People can work for food, have the right to purchase food or raise food for themselves. There is no inherent human right that says that free food must fall from the sky, appear at the door or be shat from magical ducks. Freedom allows one to pursue food, water, clothing, housing, medical care, cable TV, wi-fi or just about anything else. It does not give a guarantee that they will get any of those things. Nothing can do that.

This is the odd argument of the left – all humans need things and therefor should have them – regardless of effort or sacrifice. It is the foundation of “from each according to ability to each according to need.” An ideal proven failed over, and over, and over, and over. If it worked, more able citizens would have stayed in Detroit to provide for the needy ones. Instead more needy appeared from every corner while the able fled for areas less destitute.

When those unwilling to sacrifice or put forth effort are afforded the necessities of life anyway – why should they expend their limited resources on the necessities of life? I mean, seriously, if housing is free, spend your government check on an iPhone. If food is paid for, spend more of your resources on things like a new video game, a flat screen TV or a trip to the coast. Now.. if water is also free, just imagine what else someone could spend their money on.

Consider if your house was paid for, food provided and cell/internet included? That’s a lot of money not going to pay for services that you are consuming – free lunch! Except… someone must be paying for them…

The problem in Detroit is that after the progressives ran the city into the ground on Utopian promises, tremendous over-spending and crony politics, all the people with real resources left. Now, as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher once put it, they have “run out of other people’s money.”

So we have the intersection of Socialism’s failures with Socialism’s promises. When Socialism is in trouble, who do you turn to? Obama isn’t getting much of anything done and at this point doesn’t seem to care. Harry Reid is too busy catering to his cronies and the right is bickering over amnesty.. or something.

Bring in the United Nations .. to the United States… to straighten things out.

Which city or state will request U.N. help next? California, Cumberland, MD, Harlingen, TX?

The real question is what the heck happens once the U.N. is given authority to act on American citizens?

$300 Million for Detroit: Arbitrary Sequestration Continues

Sequestration
It seems that there is some $300 million in the federal budget for the bankrupt city of Detroit, despite what Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said. But there are no funds to conduct White House tours. Or to continue National Park services.

By cutting out White House tours, the Secret Service is saving $18,000 per week. If the money for Detroit was spent instead on tours, there would be 16,666 weeks, 320.5 years of tours that could be restored. The National Park Service endured $153.4 million in budget cuts due to sequestration, just over half what is being given to Detroit. As a result, government officials worry that these cuts will hurt towns and cities across the country, since the park system generates $30 billion in economic activity and supports 252,000 jobs.

And half of the cuts mandated by sequestration will fall upon the defense of this nation. According to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta (an Obama appointee), sequestration cuts will mean:

  • The smallest ground force since before World War II
  • The smallest Navy since before World War I
  • The smallest tactical fighter force in the history of the Air Force
  • Termination of the Joint Strike Fighter and next generation bomber
  • Delay of the next generation ballistic missile submarine, as well as cuts to our existing sub fleet
  • Cancellation of the littoral combat ship
  • Elimination of all modernization of ground combat vehicles and Army helicopters
  • Undermine our ability to meet our national security objectives
  • Generate significant operational risks and delay response time to crises, conflicts, and disasters
  • Severely limit our ability to be forward deployed
  • Severely reduce force training and threaten overall operational readiness
  • and, most importantly, undermine our ability to meet our national security objectives

What was Dear Leader Barack Hussein Obama’s response to sequestration that he proposed? He called it dumb and arbitrary, and blamed Republicans.

Perusing the OMB “Preliminary Estimates of Sequestrable and Exempt Budgetary Resources and Reduction in Sequestrable Budgetary Resources by OMB Account – FY 2013″ shows that Obama’s favorite programs, such as childhood nutrition, student aid, unemployment assistance, and renewable energy, have been largely (and arbitrarily) exempted from sequester cuts.

Obama was correct – sequestration is arbitrary. What does and doesn’t get sequestered is entirely and arbitrarily up to him. It’s interesting to note that ALL Detroit mayors since 1962 have been Democrats. It now appears as if Detroit is one of his favorite programs.

Nancy Pelosi, a political hack if ever there was one, assured us this past weekend that “The cupboard is bare. There’s no more cuts to make.” Well Nancy, I hope you are embarrassed because $300 million was “found” that could have been cut.

City of Detroit declares bankruptcy

Fried Dough (CC)

Fried Dough (CC)

Fried Dough (CC)

The City of Detroit is bankrupt. Conservatives have been pointing out the problem with municipalities of all sizes continuing to spend beyond their means, and now Detroit has become the largest city to date to officially apply for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protections in Federal Court. As reported in the Wall Street Journal:

The Chapter 9 case filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan came after Kevyn Orr, the emergency manager, failed to reach agreements with enough of the bondholders, pension funds and other creditors to restructure Detroit’s debt outside of court. The final decision rested with Republican Gov. Rick Snyder, who had appointed Mr. Orr as Detroit’s overseer in March.

It was expected that the city would report long-term liabilities close to $20 billion. The city’s assets were less clear, but Mr. Orr had called the city functionally insolvent and recently missed a payment to the city’s pension system of nearly $40 million.

Detroit has been in a state of decline for many years, primarily due to residents and businesses moving out of the city – migration to the suburbs. To make up for shortfalls in revenue, the city has been borrowing not only for day-to-day operational expenses, but also to meet pension and health care obligations for retirees. The latter has been an issue for many cities and municipalities nationwide, as the “Baby Boomer” generation continues to reach retirement age. As for Detroit, the city’s population has been dropping since an all-time high in 1950 of around 2 million residents. Today, the population of approximately 700,000 is after a 26% drop between the years 2000 and 2011.

Mayan Doomsday Talk Sparks Fear; Schools Close

MayanCalendar

MayanCalendarYes, you read that right. The doomsday predictions of that some are reading into the Mayan calendar have sparked discussion, jokes, and in some cases fear. One situation where the fear and rumors reached a crescendo was in that bastion of knowledge, the public school system.

Citing the significant disruption to the teaching and learning process Lapeer Superintendent Matt Wandrie stated that his district will be starting their Christmas break early due to rumors and concerns of violence within Detroit. In the wake of the tragic events in Connecticut, school officials of several Detroit Districts have decided to cancel school rather than risk any incidents. Other area schools are indicating a stepped up police presence.

While these may be prudent decisions on the part of the schools one might question the missed opportunity to quell rumors and Middle-Ages type hysteria rather than accept and embrace it.

Of course, I may be wrong.

Obama: My Ideas are Same as Built MI. Detroit Residents: Have You Looked Around?

Detroit_Michigan

President Obama visited Michigan to stand before workers telling them, “My ideas are the same that built Michigan.” Residents in the downtrodden city of Detroit may not be quite so enthusiastic.

Once a thriving metropolitan city Detroit saw its heyday begin with the automotive industry in the 1920’s. But changes led to economic downfall that depressed the city, causing much of the population to leave, while its infrastructure remains, crumbling. Built to house two Million residents there are now just one-third the population. A discouraging seven percent of eighth grade students can read at grade level according to US Daily Review while twenty percent of students are illiterate.  Homes are for sale at just $1000. The city holds the dubious position of most dangerous city by Forbes.  City managers are talking about bulldozing entire neighborhoods now vacant because they can’t afford to keep them secure.

The Blaze also chose to look at Detroit this week. They saw a different side of the city than what President Obama imagined. You can see the sad pictures of a once thriving area now completely dilapidated and destroyed. The Blaze.

The changes are being documented byDetroiturbex.com. Visit their website and scroll through the slide show on the “Why” page.

This surely is not the future as envisioned by Obama. But if he is using the same ideas what’s to stop it from happening?

Detroit Church to give out ‘Government Assisted’ Phones

FREE_PHONE_copy

Not to be outdone by Cleveland residents, this Detroit church is getting in on the “government assisted” cellphone giveaway.

The advertisement assures “recipients” that the “sign up process is easy and will only take a few minutes to complete”.

Just as the Obamaphone Lady made it clear, if you “are on food stamps, SSI, Medicaid or Section 8 you are welcome to receive a free cell phone”… well, that is, (while supplies last).”

Detroit; A Liberal Tragedy

Every now and then I receive an E-mail that shocks me, I am going to reprint it here, see if it shocks you. I still find it hard to believe.

Frosty Wooldridge (born 1947) is a US journalist, writer, environmentalist, traveler

DETROIT: By Frosty Wooldridge

For 15 years, from the mid 1970’s to 1990, I worked in Detroit, Michigan. I watched it descend into the abyss of crime, debauchery, gun play, drugs, school truancy, car-jacking, gangs and human depravity. I watched entire city blocks burned out. I watched graffiti explode on buildings, cars, trucks, buses and school yards. Trash everywhere!

Detroiters walked through it, tossed more into it, and ignored it. Tens of thousands, and then hundreds of thousands today exist on federal welfare, free housing, and food stamps!

With Aid to Dependent Children, minority women birthed eight to 10, and in one case, one woman birthed 24 children as reported by the Detroit Free Press, all on American taxpayer dollars.

A new child meant a new car payment, new TV, and whatever mom wanted. I saw Lyndon Baines Johnson’s ‘Great Society’ flourish in Detroit. If you give money for doing nothing, you will get more hands out taking money for doing nothing.

Mayor Coleman Young, perhaps the most corrupt mayor in America, outside of Richard Daley in Chicago, rode Detroit down to its knees… He set the benchmark for cronyism, incompetence, and arrogance. As a black man, he said, “I am the MFIC.” The IC meant “in charge”.

You can figure out the rest Detroit became a majority black city with 67 percent African-Americans.

As a United Van Lines truck driver for my summer job from teaching math and science, I loaded hundreds of American families into my van for a new life in another city or state.

Detroit plummeted from 1.8 million citizens to 912,000 today. At the same time, legal and illegal immigrants converged on the city for the free government handouts, so much so, that Muslims number over 300,000. Mexicans number 400,000 throughout Michigan, but most work in Detroit. As the whites moved out, the Muslims moved in.

As the crimes became more violent, the whites fled. Finally, unlawful Mexicans moved in at a torrid pace. Detroit suffers so much shoplifting that grocery stores no longer operate in many inner city locations. You could cut the racial tension in the air with a knife! Detroit may be one of our best examples of multiculturalism: pure dislike, and total separation from America…

Today, you hear Muslim calls to worship over the city like a new American Baghdad with hundreds of Islamic mosques in Michigan , paid for by Saudi Arabia oil money. High school flunk out rates reached 76 percent last June, according to NBC’s Brian Williams. Classrooms resemble more foreign countries than America… English? Few speak it! The city features a 50 percent illiteracy rate and growing.

Unemployment hit 28.9 percent in 2009 as the auto industry vacated the city. In Time Magazine’s October 4, 2009, “The Tragedy of Detroit: How a great city fell, and how it can rise again,” I choked on the writer’s description of what happened. “If Detroit had been ravaged by a hurricane, and submerged by a ravenous flood, we’d know a lot more about it,” said Daniel Okrent. “If drought and carelessness had spread brush fires across the city, we’d see it on the evening news every night.” Earthquake, tornadoes, you name it, if natural disaster had devastated the city that was once the living proof of American prosperity, the rest of the country might take notice.

But Detroit, once our fourth largest city, now 11th and slipping rapidly, has had no such luck. Its disaster has long been a slow unwinding that seemed to remove it from the rest of the country.

Even the death rattle that in the past year emanated from its signature industry brought more attention to the auto executives than to the people of the city, who had for so long been victimized by their dreadful decision making.”

As Coleman Young’s corruption brought the city to its knees, no amount of federal dollars could save the incredible payoffs, kickbacks and illegality permeating his administration. I witnessed the city’s death from the seat of my 18-wheeler tractor trailer because I moved people out of every sector of decaying Detroit.

“By any quantifiable standard, the city is on life support. Detroit ‘s treasury is $300 million short of the funds needed to provide the barest municipal services,” Okrent said. “The school system, which six years ago was compelled by the teachers’ union to reject a philanthropist’s offer of $200 million to build 15 small, independent charter high schools, is in receivership. The murder rate is soaring, and 7 out of 10 remain unsolved. Three years after Katrina devastated New Orleans, unemployment in that city hit a peak of 11%. In Detroit today, the unemployment rate is 28.9%. That’s worth spelling out: twenty-eight point nine percent.

At the end of Okrent’s report, and he will write a dozen more about Detroit, he said, “That’s because the story of Detroit is not simply one of a great city’s collapse, it’s also about the erosion of the industries that helped build the country we know today. The ultimate fate of Detroit will reveal much about the character of America in the 21st century.

If what was once the most prosperous manufacturing city in the nation has been brought to its knees, what does that say about our recent past? And if it can’t find a way to get up, what does that say about America s future?”

As you read in my book review of Chris Steiner’s book,”$20 Per Gallon”, the auto industry won’t come back. Immigration will keep pouring more and more uneducated third world immigrants from the Middle East into Detroit, thus creating a beachhead for Islamic hegemony in America. If 50 percent illiteracy continues, we will see more homegrown terrorists spawned out of the Muslim ghettos of Detroit. Illiteracy plus Islam equals walking human bombs.

You have already seen it in Madrid, Spain, London, England, and Paris, France with train bombings, subway bombings and riots. As their numbers grow, so will their power to enact their barbaric Sharia Law that negates republican forms of government, first amendment rights, and subjugates women to the lowest rungs on the human ladder. We will see more honor killings by upset husbands, fathers and brothers that demand subjugation by their daughters, sisters and wives. Muslims prefer be-headings of women to scare the hell out of any other members of their sect from straying. Multiculturalism: what a perfect method to kill our language, culture, country and way of life.

This was once a great city, Henry Ford must be turning over in his grave, Liberal views and policies have brought this city down. Of course Liberals will deny it, but it is a fact, something that Liberals like to ignore. If we sit and do nothing, the rest of the country is sure to follow.

This Is One Man’s Opinion.

Clint Eastwood: Spokesman For The New Detroit

Much ado has been made about the Super Bowl Clint Eastwood/Chrysler commercial, expressing the theme that Detroit, and America at large, is making a comeback. In some conservative circles, “Dirty Harry” has been criticized as shilling for President Obama.

But after reading this article by Mara Gay of The Daily, I’m convinced that the tough-guy libertarian may be the ideal spokesman for Motor City. Facing huge cutbacks in the city police force, abysmally poor response times to calls for service, and a general lack of police effectiveness, the residents of Detroit- which purportedly has the nation’s second-highest per capita murder rate- are arming themselves in record numbers- and self-defense shootings are up 79% year-over-year, and 2200% above the national average.

The article, while clearly left-biased (it describes armed citizens as “vigilantes”), illustrates a major shift in public thinking in Detroit: People are realizing they must provide for their own protection. The city police department, with its long history of mismanagement, is even more of a failure today than it ever has been. Even as the department faces multi-million-dollar budget shortfalls, the city paid over $6 million for a former casino building (VIDEO) to convert into a new police headquarters; and DPD is rolling out a “virtual precinct” program which directs calls for crimes reported after-the-fact during evening and overnight hours to an officer at headquarters to take a report. Translation: If you come home after work to find your house has been burglarized, DPD will take a report and get around to investigating it sometime. It’s no wonder foreclosed houses are selling (or not) for as little as $50 in Detroit.

Those who can afford to move out of Detroit have already done so, and those who can’t are at the end of their rope. Big-government, predominantly-Democrat Detroiters are now fully realizing that their city government can’t even provide essential services, and so they are forced to become self-sufficient.

Stated another way: Residents of one of the most liberal cities in the nation are getting the harshest “wake-up call” one can receive on the failings of big-government liberalism as a theory of governance: The promise of greater safety, which is the most-effective and most-often used means of convincing the public to give up their money and their liberties, is now a broken promise in Detroit. The usual socialist responses to such a crisis are unavailable: Raising taxes isn’t an option, because there’s nothing left to tax; begging for money from the state government isn’t an option, because the state is broke; harsher gun control laws would be opposed, because people across the political spectrum are buying and carrying guns; and more stringent enforcement isn’t a possibility, because Wayne County Jail has no room to house convicts.

As Detroiters begin to cope with the “new normal” of self-reliance, they’ll also ask questions about the condition of the city’s police force. They’ll want to know how it could get to be so bad. The answers to these questions- corrupt Democrat politicians, incompetent management, greedy and self-serving public sector unions, short-sighted liberal policies, overspending and overtaxing- can’t be concealed behind socialist rhetoric any longer. The city government has run out of excuses and other people’s money, and there’s no room in the budget to hire Robocop.

Big changes in self-defense thinking are nothing new for Detroit: The Sweet Trials of 1925-1926, which took place in Detroit, were the first occasion in our nation’s history in which an African-American successfully claimed self-defense in court.

Maybe the star of Gran Torino is a good spokesman for Detroit after all.

The Motor City Plunges Off the Greek-Style Debt Cliff

Detroit, Michigan has long been known as the motor city due to it’s being the home of the big-three auto-makers ever since the first mass-produced automobiles rolled off the assembly line of Ford Motor Company.  As the population of America increased and the demand for more automobiles skyrocketed, along with it came massive doses of wealth and prosperity for the Motor City and it’s home state of Michigan.

Fast forward to the year 2012, and we see the city of Detroit facing Greece-style austerity measures due to a $200-$300-$400 million dollar hole in it’s operating budget. (Depending on who’s numbers you believe)  Government services have been slashed, workers laid off and now we see that Detroit May Close Half of it’s Schools. “According to the Detroit News, Detroit Public Schools considered filing for bankruptcy in 2009 but declined.  In the past year alone, debt in the district has increased by more than $100 million, brought on by a ‘mix of revenue declines in property taxes, reduced state aid, declining enrollment and an unplanned staffing surge’ this past fall.” That was almost exactly a year ago, and apparently the Detroit Labor Unions are still bankrupting the Motor City today.   Add to that past crop of debt-caused austerity measures, the current reports that the State of Michigan will be forced to appoint another emergency manager with broad powers to cut spending” if city employee unions and the bureaucrats do not reach a deal on major concessions proving that Detroit’s debt problems can no longer be ignored.  How can a school system that is millions of dollars in debt, while facing declining enrollment and revenues, justify the above-mentioned “unplanned staffing surge”?  UNIONS.

Mike Shedlock sums  up the situation as follows, regarding the supposed deals to save Detroit announced by Detroit Mayor Dave Bing:

Deal Reached?
Mayor Bing is taking his script straight from Greece where a deal has been “close” for days, weeks, and now months.

What’s Best for Detroit?
The best thing for Detroit would be if there is no deal, or the state rejects the deal.
Unions are the problem and the solution is to get rid of them entirely. That will not happen under Bing, but it could happen in a state takeover.
Bing is not interested in what’s best for Detroit taxpayers nor is he interested is what’s best for Detroit school children where shockingly only 25% graduate high schools. Rather, Bing is out to save as much of the status quo as he can, including his own job of course.

Collective Bargaining has Morally and Fiscally Bankrupted Detroit Schools.

In the ultimate example of Mayor Bing proving to be nothing more than a big spending and tax increase [Democrat] denier of reality, last week Bing began firing 1000 of the city’s 11,300 public employees, has proposed a 10% cut in payments to vendors, and wants to double the 1% tax on corporations.  He proposes all of this while largely remaining silent about the real culprit that is driving the Motor City off of the debt cliff: Public Unions lavish salaries, pensions and benefits packages.

NOTE:  The Detroit Public School System is controlled by a Big Labor Union, resulting in over half of Detroit’s adults being deemed illiterate.

Update: Detroit makes top 10 list of America’s most miserable cities. (again)
