I figured it was best to clear the air, and point out the meanings of those two words from a psychoanalytical point of view. (For those that are particular about such things, those are the second definitions offered at Dictionary.com, as the first were simple English definitions, as opposed to the clinical ones.)

Now, there is no shortage of complaints from the right about the smug, self-righteous attitude citizens of this nation see daily out of the White House. The President has arguably raised this to an art-form, not that this is a good thing. After working far too many political campaigns over a span of over 20 years, I learned one very important fact – sane people do not run for public office. That is not to say that they are all ready for a padded room, but they are all at least a little mentally unbalanced. One needs to be, in order to be willing to have one’s life placed under a microscope by the masses, with the high probability that every skeleton in one’s closet will be dragged out for all to see. And the most common mental “quirk” among politicians is arguably narcissism. It makes sense, because if one doesn’t love oneself a great deal, it is unlikely that individual will manage being berated daily by detractors without acquiring another mental malady – depression.

However, in Obama’s case, the narcissism is quite a bit more severe than in most other politicians. And now that the tide is gradually turning against him, it is apparently causing him to attempt to transfer his own high opinion of himself on everyone else. Since he’s taken to promoting his vision of the United States as an extension of himself, I humbly suggest that our little narcissist Obama has slipped to the point of being downright delusional. If defining an entire generation in his own image, with #Gen44, didn’t warn people of this development, there are new signs just in the past few days.

First, it was the campaign ad that suggested Romney might not have been gutsy enough to order the death of Osama bin Laden. One would think that Obama had learned a lesson or two about the difference between being a candidate for the Presidency, and being President. The candidate Obama made promises about getting out of Afghanistan, before he was privy to all the neat little details that only the President would know. Now he wants to make suppositions about what his presumptive opponent in November might do in a situation that cannot be truthfully tested for multiple reasons, not the least of which being that it already occurred, and can’t again? Obama can’t even play “what if” on this in a debate, because that would involve revealing state secrets for Romney’s benefit.

But that, unfortunately, was just a start. Then, Obama thought it was a good idea to share some artwork that apparently depicts his vision of America.

Yes, Obama’s ego has grown so large that he thinks that he is the face of this nation, perhaps for all time. Perhaps we should get nervous if he starts taking time out from campaigning to visit South Dakota – then we need to worry about whether or not he has intentions of immortalizing himself on Mt. Rushmore, perhaps replacing another president, or worse, replace them all! I think Adam Baldwin got it right with his comparison:

Now, we all know this isn’t just about a painting, disgusting as it may be. It is about the concept, that we have a president that thinks that he is more important than the sum total of the citizens of this nation. And his precious little minions are buying it. They believe him when he tells them that Democracy is still safe even if the government controls everything. Obama says that we are still a nation that protects free speech, as his minions run amok silencing the opposition. He promises a nation free from hate, at least if you happen to agree with him. And finally, back to Osama bin Laden, Obama takes personal credit for the end of that man’s life. So, is this the United States of America, or the Narcissist States of Obama?

The passage of time has taught the peremptorily anointed messiah a thing or two about lofty rhetoric and idle vainglory. Although the media gushed about the amorphous character’s suitability for the office, there was little or nothing in Barack Obama’s background to suggest that he had the legal acumen, political expertise, or governing experience to guide a struggling nation to the promised land of lowered unemployment, manageable deficits, and shared prosperity. Quite the contrary. The community organizer’s paper thin resume suggested that the future presider over the world’s most powerful economy knew only how to ride the left’s one-trick pony of wealth division, while displaying no understanding, let alone concern, for wealth creation. By the grace of the political gods of fortune and folly, Obama masterfully rode his Methuselah all the way into the Oval Office.

During the period between his election and his immaculation, the populace was in tumult and the riptide of a housing and credit collapse was pulling the financial order under. The charismatic Obama had soothed and wooed the bridling masses with his uplifting oratory, even persuasively arguing that once ordained he would even lower the sea levels, like the mad King Canute of English lore. But an immense economy comprising over 150 million workers, tens of millions of retirees, students, and soldiers proved less malleable to reality than to the president’s imagination. Adopting the same Keynesian canards that landed previous Democrat presidents in hot water, Obama bet the house on a technocratically administrated takeover of the private sector; housing, banking, energy, industry, and last but not least, healthcare all suffered the slings and arrows of the outrageous onslaught. And years later, the bleeding has slowed to a trickle, but only after the application of a tourniquet.

There were other areas where the disconnect between rhetoric and reality exposed the president as a charlatan not only out of his league, but out of his depth. After self-righteously chiding the former president Bush on his war policies, particularly his detainment of enemy combatants at Guantanamo Bay, the recently enthroned president eventually perceived the wisdom of what he had previously decried as human rights violations.  Not only did he then carry out the wars that he had promised to his base to expeditiously end, he ratcheted up the “overseas contingency operations” and effectively declared a war on Libya, not by appealing to the consent of the American people whose sons and daughters were to wage the campaign, but by justifying the measure as the final decision of some unaccountable international body! The actions of the president were no longer a matter of partisan contention, but were now flaunting his constitutional authority. The president had dishonored himself and his office by wantonly disobeying his oath.

The inertia caused by the administration’s ‘perpetual revolution’ of daily outrages ensuing from the moment Obama assumed office has petered out and the affairs of state are currently grinding to a halt. The tea party-led overturning of the House had at least accomplished the task of slowing things down to a manageable speed where the public could perceptibly track the insidious affairs of the administration.  The absurdity of the administration’s policies on the BP oil spill and the drilling moratorium (in defiance of court order), the Keystone pipeline, Cash for Clunkers, Fast & Furious… and the entire gambit of destructive left-wing lunacy is only now coming to light. The president’s highly suspect foreign policy vis-a-vis Russia and China, including his comment on his “flexibility” in regards to ABM defense in Europe, as well as his meddling throughout the Middle East, further throw into question his judgment.

The piece de resistance, however, is the slapping around of the president’s signature piece of legislation: Obamacare. It appears now to the majority of the attentive public that the highly unpopular legislation might potentially be struck down. But this is not the key takeaway. It is that the former Constitutional law professor seems to have not considered that forcing all American citizens to purchase a good or service might be unconstitutional. After a rough week for his Solicitor General presenting the government’s case to uphold the law, the president lashed out at the Supreme Court, even superciliously second-guessing the long-standing legal tenet of judicial review.

A fifth circuit judge has now humiliatingly issued the president’s Justice department a homework assignment: tell the third branch of government in three single-spaced pages the executive branch’s position on judicial review. It looks like the man who once had the hubris to condemn the law of the land as a ‘charter of negative liberties‘ that couldn’t say what the government could do ‘on our behalf’ is about to get a cold lesson in humility while serving as president. Instead of appealing to reason and the consent of the people, the president has routinely resorted to brute force and deception. Unfortunately for Barack Obama, these do not play to well in a court that operates according to the rule of law, and not the rule of men.
