Fears of a gas shortage are spreading across the state of California as residents woke up to gas prices that had jumped as much as 30 cents in some places over night. The average cost of gas per gallon in California is now $4.49/gallon and some station in L.A. are listing unleaded prices at $5.69. Warehouse giant Costco has already closed some gas stations around the state, citing a lack of fuel and no way to predict when the next delivery will be. The price jump is being blamed by some economists on a fire and accident at to refineries that caused a slow-down in production, a switch in the seasonal blend and more gas and oil being exported to Mexico. Gas stations are already reporting long lines and worries about future deliveries.
In light of the suspicious but positive jobs numbers today a gas shortage in any state doesn’t seem to jibe with the idea of a recovery.
Always the model of awareness and concern, Governor Jerry Brown has been tweeting about…the Oakland A’s and new tax hikes on the November ballot…two days ago!
The sky is falling, but don’t worry! The recovery is booming and Jerry’s going to make sure Californians don’t have to worry about those few remaining dollars in those pesky, cumbersome savings accounts.
10/2/12 Tonight marks the first of three debates between President Obama and his opponent Mitt Romney. It will be hosted at the University of Colorado and moderated by PBS’s Jim Lehrer (making his 13th Presidential Debate appearance). This also may be the first time the nation at large will get to see the “real” candidates. During the 2008 elections Obama was an unknown quantity, a blank canvas on which Americans could project their own ideas of who Barack Obama was, and who they hoped him to be. This time around Obama has a record, a string of scandals and an air of arrogance that has surprised many of his supporters. Since the mainstream media has already been grossly negligent in reporting on the Obama administration, tonight will be the first time the public will be able to see Obama directly challenged on his dismal record.
This will also be the first time many non-Republicans will get to see Mitt Romney in action. Tonight will be an opportunity for Romney to show America his “real” personality as opposed to what gets shown on the biased evening news reports from a negligent (yes, I used the word again because it cannot be overstated) national media. If played right, this could be Romney’s Reagan moment. Just like Reagan did in 1980 when running against Carter, Romney could have the opportunity to show a lighter side than has been painted in the media; to break away from the “evil Republican” caricature and give Americans the opportunity to say “Gee, I never realized he was such a likable guy”.
Already the mainstream media and the Obama campaign (one in the same, basically) have been hard at work lowering expectations for his performance tonight. There is no doubt that this debate is Romney’s to lose…but then again, Republicans have always been good at securing defeat from the jaws of victory.
There should be no issues finding a broadcast to watch this evening as nearly every major station will be covering the event, but here is a link to one live stream if you prefer to watch online. And don’t forget to follow me on Twitter as I’ll be live-tweeting the debate tonight and that is ALWAYS entertaining. You can follow me @kiradavis422 or just click on the Twitter button right here on the site to get connected.
Spanish language network Univision is quickly becoming a powerhouse in U.S. media. Perhaps that’s because they are more concerned about their markets (read:money) then winning the beauty pageant on Capitol Hill. Their obvious concern for the people they serve and what moves them has led Univision to step out in front on the Fast and Furious scandal, which very well may be the biggest political scandal of our time. For months conservatives have been begging the mainstream media to pay attention to the deaths of hundreds of Mexicans and border agent Brian Terry as a result of the ill-conceived gun walking scheme from the Obama administration. But since the MSM is really made up of under-cover racists who actually don’t really care about the lives of people they don’t know or understand, they’ve buried their heads on the issue. Here comes Univision, picking up the slack and doing the job the mainstream media just won’t do. Perhaps when MSNBC starts caring a little more about their ratings than their spot on the cocktail circuit they’ll join Univision in covering real news. Until then, here is a replay of the Univision story with English subtitles. Please share this with friends. Americans need to know what has been happening at our hands south of the border.
Today the state of California continued it’s march toward insanity with the passage of several controversial bills. Governor Jerry Brown signed AB2189, which “will let the Department of Motor Vehicles issue licenses to illegal immigrants eligible for work permits under a new Obama administration policy. The bill requires the department to accept as proof of legal residence whatever document the federal government provides to participants in its deferred action program,” according to CBS News. No more worrying about those pesky laws against illegal immigration. One needs only to head to their local DMV to obtain a valid state i.d. and avail themselves of all the privileges of being a citizen of this country without having to go through the process of actually becoming a citizen. As a friend of mine said today, has anyone told Jerry Brown yet i.d.’s are racist?
Brown also signed SB-1172, billed as Sexual Change Efforts. This bill “prohibits a mental health provider, as defined, from engaging in sexual orientation change efforts, as defined, with a patient under 18 years of age. The bill would provide that any sexual orientation change efforts attempted on a patient under 18 years of age by a mental health provider shall be considered unprofessional conduct and shall subject the provider to discipline by the provider’s licensing entity.” Although the bill specifically addresses mental health providers, a more in depth reading of the bill reveals language that basically makes the concept of reparative therapy for same sex attraction illegal under any circumstances, including in the religious sphere. The bill claims reparative therapies add to an air of intolerance, causing those who identify as homosexual to suffer rejection from family and society and adding to suicide rates. The Pacific Justice Institute has already launched a challenge to the bill, claiming it violates parental rights, freedom of religion and freedom of speech.
Cathy is a California mother who’s son Jack (names have been changed to protect privacy) has struggled with same sex attraction. Cathy and Jack sought out therapy to help him deal with his feelings and the arising consequences. Although Cathy says her son’s therapy was not focused on “conversion” it did lead to better understanding of his feelings and seemingly healthy opposite-sex relationships. Though Cathy’s son identifies as a bisexual she says, “if one assumes sexuality is on a scale and not binary then many bisexuals can choose. Some may choose straight, some may choose gay.” She goes on to say parents know what is best for their children and any anti-reparitive legislation isn’t going to change how a family accepts their gay child. In the end, Cathy echoes what many Americans believe: it should be up the individual whether or not they want to partake in such therapies, not the state.
I contacted Exodus International, which is a Christian ex-gay ministry. A representative told me they “are not a therapy organization” but declined further comment, saying an official response would be posted on their website shortly.
These bills are indicative of California’s downward slide: restricting the freedom of law-abiding citizens while granting more freedoms to those here illegally. Regardless of your feelings about homosexuality the idea of the state limiting how any one individual chooses to deal with the issue is a direct violation of our freedoms of speech and religion; and issuing valid state i.d. to illegal immigrants (essentially making them legal residents) is an insult to every immigrant waiting in line to gain the privileges of American citizenship the right way.
But if you’re a gay illegal alien, your life just got a whole lot easier.

President Obama will address the United Nations this week and reports are that he will once again address the YouTube video that is supposedly fueling the anti-American riots across the Middle East. Whatever he says, I know I will be underwhelmed and disappointed. I decided to provide my own address to the United Nations. This video is what I would say if I had the opportunity to address the United Nations as a representative of the American people. I’m sorry for the poor audio. It’s just me and the webcam so quality is limited but as my friend Lee Doren says, don’t sweat it and don’t be afraid. Just turn on the camera and talk. A transcript is also posted beneath the video.
Despots, traitors, authoritarians, totalitarians, thieves, war criminals, genocidal maniacs, dictators and the precious few rest of you who actually carry the mantel of freedom, welcome to the United States and New York City, where you’ll remember over 3000 of our innocent citizens between here and Washington DC were murdered 11 years ago as many of you danced in your elaborate golden palaces, many of which are lined with the tears and blood of your own people. We are so privileged to have you here. My fellow citizens and I find no small measure of entertainment in watching you eat and drink the bounty of our land and enjoy the privileges of comfortable luxury appointments, all of which are provided to you by the very freedom you pledge to murder wherever and wherever possible.
By now it has come to our attention in no small manner that many of you and your people have been gravely upset by a YouTube video that purportedly disparages Islam. So upset, that your proxies who claim to represent Islam have murdered our ambassador and overrun our sovereign embassies in defiance of hundreds of years of international tradition and diplomacy. Apparently the 98 people with internet access in your third world dictatorships were so outraged by this YouTube, I repeat, YouTube video they saw fit to rape ambassador Chris Stevens before killing and photographing his body in the streets of Libya. Now I know that to many of you, this is not a shocking allegation as you have very fond feelings for the act of rape. But here in America we consider that the ugliest of violations toward any human being. It’s a shame that YouTube video, I repeat, YouTube video was ever produced at all. Forget the content, the quality is most offensive to those of us who actually value freedom. Most Americans could have probably done a better job with some bedsheets, Halloween hair coloring and tanning lotion, and done so without insulting what so many of our own citizens believe to be a holy book and prophet. However, that is the unfortunate price of freedom. The freedom to make good choices is also the same freedom to make poor choices. How else do you explain Glee and Matt Damon? Two things we do sincerely apologize for. We also apologize for not telling you sooner that your determination to condemn your citizens to a 12th century existence in a 21st century world is no longer our problem or our concern. If this never-ending war in Afghanistan has taught us anything it’s that too many of you have placed little or no value on the lives of your own citizens, your own women, your own children. You have traded the message and basis of freedom for greed, corruption, selfishness, cruelty and evil at the expense of those you pledged to care for when you took, or stole leadership. We apologize to the citizens of Iran and Egypt who truly do want freedom and progress, and whom we abandoned under our own President when they needed our support the most. That is a genuine source of grief and shame for many Americans who long to see you free and prosperous as well. We are so sorry for that. We also apologize for emboldening some your state sponsored terrorist organizations by perpetuating the lie that these attacks on our sovereign embassies over a YouTube, I repeat, a YouTube video and not calling this what it really was from the beginning: an attack on American interests and values to commemorate the anniversary of September 11 in the United States. We apologize for our President, who has clearly abandoned the message of freedom and achievement that has made our country the greatest country on the face of the planet in all history forever and ever in favor of a message of appeasement; appeasement to you dictators who give not a moment’s thought to the suffering of your own people while you live lives of ease and luxury upon the dollars and earnings that you have outright stolen at the end of a gun.
What we don’t apologize for and will never apologize for is our own citizens exercising their own God-given right to free speech (no matter how ugly or poorly produced) on our own soil, using our own technology, to reach our own people. American values have not and will not ever be dictated by a small group of fascist demons with daddy issues who hate the idea of freedom so much that they have pledged, sworn to eradicate the only free, successful society among them, that being Israel. Americans will not apologize to anyone outside of our borders for what we do inside our borders. It’s our business. If we’re ever in the mood for stonings, beheading homosexuals, or wiping our butts with our hands we’ll come visit you and subject ourselves to your national dominion. However, until then we’ll continue to do as we please with our own rights in our own country provided to us by our own Constitution and our God. There aren’t many of us who are truly excited about the content of this YouTube video, I repeat, YouTube video; but we all understand that freedom of speech is not truly free unless you have the freedom to say things that might offend others. What true freedom also produces, is a general common sense among the masses that offensive speech does not and should not produce massive violent attacks.
We are Americans, and our right to free speech is one of the most valued rights we have; indeed most of our other rights flow from that one concept; the idea that every human should be able to speak their mind without fear of retribution or physical harm. It is no coincidence that we are the freest, most powerful country on earth. That too is directly tied to our freedom of speech. But I think you know that, and that is why you work so hard to censor us within our own borders from within your own borders. You understand that the only way to truly break the American spirit that has been responsible for so much prosperity and yes, so much peace is to destroy our freedom of expression. But I’ve come to tell you today that will not happen. We will not bow or capitulate to your warped ideas of morality. Ideas that advocate killing over people over a YouTube video, I repeat, a YouTube video, but have no issues with treating women as property, cattle, or less. Sorry, we’re just not going to do that. so while we agree that this YouTube video, I repeat, YouTube video really sucks, we also understand that it has the right to exist and suck. It’s not always pretty, but that is price of freedom and whenever I sit down to enjoy my daily meals, running showers and household technology I do believe it is an appropriate price to pay for plethora of blessings we have.
In summary, we’re Americans and we love freedom and we always will so suck it.
I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the controversy surrounding my ejection from MSNBC’s outdoor pavilion during the DNC. I decided to lay out my version of events on YouTube. I hope this clears up any questions for you. I also want to thank Tabitha Hale of the Franklin Center, Brandon Darby and Lee Stranahan for standing by me during this ridiculous course of events.
