Clerk fired for heroic deed

Convenience store clerks are at a uniquely high risk of victimization at the hands of armed robbers. In many cases, these employees are literally put in a life-or-death situation without moving from behind the counter.

When 7-Eleven clerk Edward Vaught found himself staring down the barrel of a robber’s handgun, he made the quick decision to stand up for himself and the store.
Vaught said Christopher Munson brandished what appeared to be a gun, “pointed it right at my forehead” and “threatened … to kill me.”
As the clerk attempted to call authorities, Munson manhandled the receiver away from him. At that point, Vaught began to fight back.
“This man wants to hurt me so I need to defend myself,” he explained. When police arrived on the scene, Vaught had Munson subdued and waiting for them outside.
While he was initially heralded by the community for his quick action in the face of danger, his employer soon delivered a pink slip as reward for his deed.
Based on its “policy of non-confrontation,” the corporation said Vaught’s “dismissal was in order.”
Obviously, employers should have some guidelines barring violence in the workplace; however, terminating a clerk for potentially saving the lives of both employees and customers is incredibly shortsighted.
While a company statement contends the clerk “posed a danger to himself and a co-worker,” many rational Americans understand it was the lawless robber, not a courageous employee, who exhibited a threat that day.
At the risk of appearing overly partisan, this type of nonsense is emblematic of the left’s skewed worldview. As evidenced in their blind allegiance to draconian gun control laws, those on the radical left seemingly believe encouraging victimhood is the most effective way to combat victimizers.

ACLU threat prompts school to ban postgame prayer

ACLU threat prompts school to ban postgame prayer

A Michigan high school recently joined the long list of organizations unwilling to stand up to bullies on the godless left. The Lahser High School football team has a long tradition of leading an invocation, which is open to anyone on either team, following games.

Unsurprisingly, the American Civil Liberties Union suffered a collective conniption and filed a complaint in an effort to put the kibosh on the practice. Administrators, including head coach Dan Loria, immediately obliged.

Conceding the postgame prayer is “something that somebody wanted to do every year,” Loria was overly apologetic for his role in the manufactured controversy.

Claiming he “lost sight of it” because of the ceremonial aspect of the tradition, the coach said he should not have allowed his players to express their faith in the first place. Hoping to placate the godless bullies targeting his team, Loria confirmed he was only present during the prayers and never took a leadership role.

“By me being present, I was encouraging it,” he said. “This happened because of me and I had to wake up.”

Finding an area of agreement, I also believe it is time to wake up. While countless other groups receive special consideration from our government, Christians are told they must remain silent regarding their convictions.

This, of course, is contrary to Christ’s instruction to “go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” Whether bureaucrats in Washington and shyster ACLU lawyers will admit it or not, there is a higher authority to whom even they will one day answer. In the meantime, believers must be vigilant in reflecting the Light of Jesus to a dark and bitter world.

Famed singer butchers anthem at gay pride event

Jason H. Smith (CC)

Jason H. Smith (CC)

The meat dress she infamously wore to the MTV Music Awards a few years back is far less rancid than some of the reprehensible things that have come out of pop star Lady Gaga’s mouth. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise the anything-for-attention media darling would have no qualms about replacing key phrases in our National Anthem to create an alignment with her own skewed philosophy.

That is exactly what she did during an appalling rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner to begin a gay pride gathering in New York City recently. Not only did she change the words — and meaning — of the anthem just days before Independence Day, she held firmly to a rainbow flag all the while. Apparently making a reference to the recognizable symbol of homosexual culture, Gaga’s performance swapped “flag of pride” for “banner” in the song’s penultimate line. The most egregious edit came at the very end, though, when she described her vision of America: “O’re the land of the free,” she continued, “and the home for the gay?”

Homosexual activists have rightly been very celebratory in light of recent Supreme Court decisions in their favor. Though I wholeheartedly disagree with the redefinition of marriage, I understand much of this nation is on board with these changes and have an absolute right to speak out in their defense. When one of the cause’s most prominent voices rewrites the National Anthem to uphold a position many find immoral, though, it is incumbent on the rest of us to hold her accountable.

There is no question many in the movement do not want mere equality for gays — which they have had all along — but superiority. Gaga’s irresponsible performance proved just that by admitting she sees a “home for the gay” at the apparent exclusion of everyone else. Should any other group — especially one heavily populated by either whites or Christians — dare use patriotic sentiment to champion a separatist cause, its members would be mercilessly and justifiably chastised. When the otherwise unpardonable act is perpetrated on behalf of the influential homosexual lobby, however, one struggles to hear even the hint of disapproval from major media.

Pelosi distorts July 4 to celebrate “health independence”

In a desperate effort to prop up an utterly unpopular law, Democrat hack and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi seeks to redefine Independence Day with a shameless Obamacare plug.
While Americans across the nation take time to reflect on the sacrifice made by our founders to grant us the freedom — such as it is — we enjoy today, Pelosi claims “we’ll also be observing health independence.”
She is referring, of course, to the abysmal and falsely labeled Affordable Care Act, which was unfortunately upheld by the Supreme Court about one year prior to her recent comments.
Without cracking a smile, which is admittedly tough given her penchant for cosmetic surgery, she said the law “captures the spirit of our founders.”
There is nothing in our Constitution on which she could possibly base that absurd allegation, but history has proven Pelosi and her cohorts on the lunatic left care little about backing up their reckless rhetoric.
Obamacare offers the exact opposite of “health independence,” as those subjected to its coverage are completely at the mercy of federal regulators. Pelosi did not stop with the requisite propaganda in support of her party, she also threw in a few jabs aimed at the right.
“If Paul Revere were here today,” she speculated, “we would need someone like him to be running through the streets saying, ‘Sequester is coming!'”
Reckless spending is somehow equated with liberty to the faulty mind of a leftist like Pelosi. In that regard, it is no wonder she will be spending Independence Day expressing gratitude for the most bloated, wasteful, and unnecessary bill in American history.

Million-dollar program turns students into Obamacare shills

Million-dollar program turns students into Obamacare shills

Leftist indoctrination has become so ubiquitous within the American public school system, students themselves are now feeling pressure to themselves become propagandists for the progressive cause.
Such is the case with a nearly $1 million program designed to ensure Los Angeles teens present a rosy portrait of Obamacare outside of school.
According to the L.A. Unified School District, the project will result in students “trained to be messengers to family members.”
A spokesperson for Covered California, the state exchange responsible for a total of $37 million in grants to promote Obamacare, said she has “confidence” that, through this initiative, students will be “successful in reaching our target population, which includes family members of students.”
Exposing teens to a one-sided, misleading view of a law so nebulous even its supporters do not understand it is an unconscionable misappropriation of school resources. Already taught factually incorrect and highly prejudicial nonsense from the earliest grades, this audacious program serves to raise that already towering bar.
District spokesperson Gayle Pollard-Terry issued a written statement calling participating students “part of a ‘pilot’ program to test whether young people can be trained as messengers to deliver outreach and limited education,” later explaining “funding will come based on performance.”
Larry Hicks, another LAUSD spokesperson, elaborated on the particulars of the agreement.
“At a minimum, grantees will be required to submit to Covered California monthly, quarterly, and annual reports on their activities towards agreed upon outcomes,” he said. The district must submit additional reports should progress fall short of expectations and the entire initiative will be under the purview of field monitors.
I have long contended traditional parents must become engaged and involved in their children’s education, considering the surreptitious nature with which teachers and administrators often disseminate leftist talking points. Hopefully hearing a child offer a half-baked defense of an indefensible law at the dinner table will be the wake up call these well-intentioned parents need.

U.K. scouts remove God from pledge

mjtmail (CC)

In the wake of a controversial Boy Scouts of America vote allowing openly gay members, traditional scouting was dealt another blow by administrators in Great Britain.

The Girl Guides and Brownies programs overseas have pledged to “love God” for more than a century, but a recent decision scrapped that portion of the oath for more politically correct, humanist language.

The program’s counterpart in Australia has already undergone a similar change to its pledge and U.K. Boy Scouts are also looking into whitewashing any references to a Higher Power.

Replacing an oath to the Creator, the young girls now must pledge only to “myself” and “my beliefs.” The permissive left regularly uses such language to justify any number of unconscionable acts.

While the Girl Guides hope to bring in more non-believers with the secular update, some see it as an inexcusable break from tradition.

“Taking ‘God’ out of the promise denies the history and foundations of the movement without offering anything in its place,” said Christian Concern CEO Andrea Miniciello Williams, noting “the organization will lose its distinctive ethos and end up meaning nothing.”

Standing for nothing is vital to the radical left, though, because it won’t offend anyone. The Christians upset with having any reference to the organization’s heritage ripped from the oath can easily be dismissed as intolerant extremists.

Scouting programs were one of the last remaining programs through which traditional values and code of conduct were passed from one generation to the next. This, too, has now been thoroughly infiltrated by the lunatic left.

The Girl Guides’ selfward shift in focus can be seen in the larger context of its recently appointed CEO, Julie Bentley, who called the organization the “ultimate feminist organization.” Feminists have long been misled to believe they are better off independent and without any outside, ‘oppressive’ influence. Removing a young girl’s greatest potential influencer from her pledge is one more step in continuing that dishonest narrative.

For now, American scouts still pledge to God. Given this nation’s rapid and unprecedented moral decline, though, smart money says it’s just a matter of time.

Proposed bill would “blindfold” New York cops

Proposed bill would “blindfold” New York cops

Modern law enforcement officers already face a litany of hurdles and red tape while performing their prescribed duties and a proposed New York City bill would further hamstring that city’s policing efforts.
Police in the nation’s most populous city are outraged by a city council recommendation that would prohibit them from describing suspects using almost any objective criteria aside from clothing.
NYPD Captains Union President Roy Richter explained the proposed bill would “ban cops from identifying a suspect’s age, gender, color, or disability.”
Doubling down on the already ridiculous anti-discrimination laws on the books, officers would effectively be pursuing leads blind. That concept is illustrated perfectly through recently unveiled advertisements criticizing the absurd proposal.
Michael Palladino, president of the department’s detectives union, elaborated on the ad campaign, which features Richter wearing a blindfold as a stream of pedestrians pass in the background.
He said New York City Council Speaker and bill sponsor Christine Quinn is trying to “sell the security of all New Yorkers for votes.”
Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch was similarly incensed, explaining “the council should be supporting its police officers, not attacking them.”
Officers rightly rely on physical descriptions to locate wanted individuals and this foolhardy bill would only benefit the criminal population. Perhaps the fact that even notoriously audacious NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a vocal opponent of the bill is evident of its overreach.

Pastor sues after receiving “pagan” license plate

Pastor sues after receiving “pagan” license plate

Anyone familiar with my position relating to tort reform understands I feel this nation’s overly litigious nature is a factor in many of our current ills.
While I firmly stand by that assertion, I also believe a lawsuit can sometimes be the only way to bring much deserved attention to an issue that might otherwise be ignored.
Such is the case with a case filed by Bethany, Okla., pastor Keith Cressman. Though Christian messages are often banned as images or phrases on license plates, Cressman was taken aback by the inclusion of Native American theology during a recent visit to the DMV.
While a pro-life message was blocked in North Carolina just months before, the pastor said he was compelled upon accepting his new plates to become a “mobile billboard” for a belief he doesn’t share.
The tags bear an image of an archer who, according to Apache belief, will be able to bring rain by using a specific arrow.
An appeals court is allowing his case to continue after it was shot down by a judge after a prior hearing.
Speaking for his client, Center for Religious Expression attorney Nathan Kellum said Cressman is constitutionally protected from displaying “an image that communicates a pagan practice” that contradicts his own belief system.
While there are other personalized license plate designs from which he could choose for an additional fee, Cressman said he should not face a financial penalty for requesting inoffensive tags.
Once again, the dichotomous nature of modern leftists is on full display. While Christian themes are altogether unavailable, Christians themselves face a choice of displaying a heathen practice or paying a premium to choose an alternate image.

Shocker: Media criticism of gay marriage virtually nonexistent

Shocker: Media criticism of gay marriage virtually nonexistent

Though the results of a recent survey could easily be filed under “Duh,” it is important to illustrate the obvious agenda today’s mainstream media relentlessly pushes onto its near-catatonic audience.

The Pew Research Center determined news sources approach the topic of gay marriage favorably more than five times as often as they present any level of criticism. In fact, positive stories outnumber even neutral, unbiased coverage by three percent.

A mere nine percent of media reports highlighted opposing views, researchers found, despite results of a poll by the same group that shows 42 percent of the public disapproves of gay marriage.

Among the most unbalanced reporting found in the study came from MSNBC. Again, no big surprise. On that network, a full 64 percent of stories presented gay marriage in a strictly positive light while just six percent focused on opposition.

Fox News did a better job of remaining unbiased. In an effort to live up to its “Fair and Balanced” tagline, under 30 percent of the news giant’s gay marriage coverage championed the cause with eight percent providing a voice to detractors. As it should be, 63 percent of the network’s reporting featured varied opinions on the subject.

Journalism has long been trapped under the oppressive thumb of leftism as purported news anchors increasingly use their position to disseminate opinions instead of facts. As this and countless other similar studies prove, there is often little to distinguish mainstream reporters from the bevy of shameless political hacks. At least the hacks have the decency to be honest about their intentions.

Landrieu slams “dumb” border fence then fails remedial geography

Landrieu slams “dumb” border fence then fails remedial geography

One brief comment during Senate debates recently gave Mary Landrieu an opportunity to illustrate how vindictive and ill-informed the modern political left has become.
The Democrat began her remarks by trashing a border fence amendment suggested by her Republican counterpart John Thune.
He wants a double fence to trace America’s southern border, which Landrieu said she “would be voting against” because of “how easy it is for people to be very ingenious about getting over it or under it.”
Though she voted for the Secure Fence Act in 2006, she now says she won’t “waste taxpayer money on a dumb fence.”
Had she stopped there, she would have only been guilty of proliferating the incendiary rhetoric common on her side of the aisle. She kept talking, though, and didn’t stop until she had wedged another foot in her mouth.
Landrieu said she would rather listen to Sen. John McCain, whose home state of Arizona borders Mexico, than South Dakota’s Thune, “who only has a border with Canada.”
For those whose geography education was limited to the public school system, North Dakota – not South – shares a border with Canada. Facts, however, are of little value to the party ruled entirely by feelings.

The unbelievable case against beloved children’s stories

The unbelievable case against beloved children’s stories

According to results presented by a researcher during a recent conference, parents who read their children books featuring the Berenstain Bears, among other characters, are putting the next generation at risk.
Nora Timmerman and Julia Ostertag, obviously lunatic leftists of the highest order, were among those who prepared research papers for the annual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences held recently in Canada.
They contend stories featuring animals – such as cartoon protagonists Arthur and Franklin – who act like humans are detrimental in a litany of ways, despite the fact generations of children grew up on just such fare with no evidence of negative influence.
Primarily, Timmerman said, these stories send the wrong message to adolescents by ignoring the fact that “animals themselves may have lessons to teach us” and instead insert them into a human situation.
Anthropomorphic animals should be replaced by creatures shown in their “full richness and ambiguity,” the paper suggests.
Otherwise, Timmerman contends, adolescents won’t “come to value that experience as much or think it’s worthwhile.”
While ridiculous on its face and easily addressed with a visit to the zoo, the paper’s next contention highlights the inanity of leftist thought.
Traditional families, which are roundly ridiculed by elitist academics, is easier to sell when embodied by talking animals, the researchers claim.
These stories advance a “culture of prejudice,” Timmerman said, suggesting politically incorrect plots consisting of a mother, father, and children [gasp!] is often “more hidden when they’re inserted into a story about animals or animal form.”
Making sure there is no mistake about their research, the paper includes the outrageous opinion that “much” of the wholesome, educational content available for developing minds “reproduces and confirms, racist, colonial, consumerist, heteronormative, and patriarchal norms.”
Research from the likes of Timmerman and Ostertag, while objectively ludicrous, can be of some assistance to new parents. I suggest compiling a list of the books and cartoons these women criticize, using it as a reference for media to which your children should be exposed.

Is secession our only hope?

Is secession our only hope?

There exist in today’s America a rising number of groups advocating secession from the U.S. in several states. In decades past, such movements would have likely been immediately relegated to the dustbin of absurdity; however, advocates for the cause currently include mainstream patriots upset with the metastasizing tyranny they see originating in Washington, D.C.
Of all the states seeking independence, the effort in my home state of Texas is clearly most prominent. Gaining attention through petitions that circulated after Barack Obama’s re-election, the Texas Nationalist Movement was active long before 2012.
Curious about the actual feasibility of such an ambitious proposal, I recently had the opportunity to meet with organizers in my county.
Roger Jordan and Gerald Neece serve as the Parker County TNM coordinator and deputy coordinator, respectively, and took time to break down the specifics of the movement and their reasons for becoming involved.
The uproar among leftists over Chick-fil-A’s support of traditional marriage was a tipping point for Jordan, he said, prompting him to realize something unrecognizable had replaced the nation he knew and loved.
“After that, I started looking at independence movements,” he said, though some he researched initially were “too militant for me.”
TNM, on the other hand, “works with the legislation,” he said. “It’s a peaceful movement.”
He initially became involved by contacting local representatives and traveling to Austin with his wife to learn more from state leaders.
“One of the biggest things we come across is people saying, ‘You can’t do that,'” Jordan explained, adding Texas is in a uniquely advantageous position to attain independence.
A country is defined by its political, economic, and cultural characteristics, he said, noting the Lone Star State possesses its own identity in each category.
Depending on criteria used, Texas has between the 10th and 14th largest economy in the world, he said, adding it is diversified among a plethora of industries and the state has a positive trade balance with other states.
Furthermore, he said the state has an independent power grid and nearly all major pipelines either originate or run through Texas.
Another misconception Jordan addressed is the perceived lack of patriotism associated with secessionist movement.
“What’s the higher patriotism?” he asked, explaining the TNM embraces founding principles instead of the bloated federal government currently stifling American freedom.
Though both Jordan and Neece expressed support for the work of the Tea Party, they feel the time for reform has passed.
“The idea they’re going to make a dent is $16 trillion in debt is ridiculous,” Jordan said. As federal power increases, the rights of states and individuals necessarily diminishes, he noted.
“We don’t repeal laws,” he said. “It took 13 years to repeal abolition as unpopular as that was.”
Many people forget, Neece interjected, that states created the federal government – not the other way around.
“Why do we even have states at this point?” he asked, decrying the “iron-handed despotism” feared by anti-Federalists during the nation’s founding. “It’s just prophetic.”
The federal government has passed an average of 300 laws each year since 1970 and currently spends $700,000 each second. Such rampant growth is unsustainable and TNM members want to get out while they still can.
“We organize volunteers to act,” Neece said, explaining nominal membership dues support grassroots efforts, not funding lobbyists. The group will also be supporting candidates through a political action committee, he said, and advertisements will soon carry the message across television and radio airwaves.
Jordan noted 14 new countries have formed within the past two decades and there are currently 72 “widely recognized independence movement” throughout the world. “This is a revolution and it’s too big to stop.”
While public schools teach “a good citizen is somebody loyal to the government, not the Constitution,” he noted “our Constitution describes 50 sovereign republics.”
The Texas Nationalist Movement began in 1995, Neece said, quashing misconceptions the group is merely against Obama’s policies.
“We’re not just anti-Democrat,” he said, adding the organization has members in each state and across the world. Neece also responded to another common inference.
“We are not a militia,” he said, “and notice I didn’t wink when I said that.”
The movement isn’t about rousing rabble, he explained, adding that if “the Texas Nationalist Movement is successful, we disappear.”
Jordan admitted that “Texas independence on its face looks crazy,” but he and many others feel its far crazier to stand idly by as America is destroyed from within.
Though I haven’t officially joined the secessionist cause, I am seriously considering it. Jordan and Neece offered a cognizant, cohesive plan of action and those involved warrant gratitude for championing freedom and liberty despite unfavorable odds.
The movement highlights the same moral character embodied by our founders nearly 250 years ago and certainly deserves to be taken seriously.

Trash collectors, mailmen assist cash-strapped Calif. cops

Trash collectors, mailmen assist cash-strapped Calif. cops

California is so broke…
It could be the setup to any number of outrageous punch lines, but few jokes could top the reality in one Golden State town.
Antioch police are apparently experiencing a staff shortage so severe public servants of all stripes are being drafted to help enforce law and order.
An ongoing program known as “We’re Looking Out for You” provides training to local mail carriers and trash collectors in the hopes they will be able to spot crime being missed by genuine authority figures. The city of more than 100,000 currently deploys as few as five officers during a shift.
Reports show the department is at least 12 officers short and, even if fully staffed, would employ about 25 fewer officers than in recent years.
There are many reasons California is not on my short list of vacation spots, but the thought of relying on a postal employee in an emergency is particularly discouraging.
I certainly mean no offense to the many proud mail carriers and garbage collectors across America. My sentiments would be the same no matter the municipal workers called on to fill in the law enforcement gap.
If actual police are not capable of effectively patrolling the streets of Antioch, calling on staff from unrelated departments – who are already performing their own prescribed duties – doesn’t make me feel significantly safer.

Stimulus grant funded sex study among gay dads

Stimulus grant funded sex study among gay dads

When one considers the rampant waste associated with the ill-fated 2009 economic stimulus package, it is evident the economy was not its true focus at all.
Apparently, the California district represented by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi decided to instead to focus instead on a “stimulus package” of an altogether different stripe.
Financed by nearly half a million in stimulus grant money, the San Francisco State University set out to unravel the mystery surrounding homosexual fathers’ sex lives.
The results of “Health and HIV Among Gay Fathers” was initially published in a psychology journal in 2012 and included the claim homosexual parents are at a reduced risk for HIV because “they become very focused on the kids, they are tired, there is less time for communication and less desire for sex.”
Such a groundbreaking discovery is obviously worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from a stimulus meant to restart a depressed economy, but the researchers didn’t stop there. They also made sure to look out for those sexually promiscuous gay dads out there who might have missed the memo about the risks of HIV.
Calling monogamy a “stigma” for gay fathers, the report said rampant unprotected sex “could be a concern” and urged men to “talk to their physician about their sexual agreement and get tested for HIV.”
The exhaustive – and exhausting – report touched on several other topics, including the “deepened … relationship” between two men after adopting kids.
Concerning the purported mission of Obama’s stimulus package, though, this grant was just another abysmal failure. Reports show no jobs were either created or retained through the expenditure of all related funds.

Elementary school hosts toy gun buyback

The unprecedented overreach of public school administrators regarding the issue of guns continues at breakneck speed. Regardless of context, children now regularly face draconian punishment for even mentioning the word.
If rational thought ever again prevails in America, we might look back to one event signaling the point this leftist movement jumped the shark: an elementary school’s toy gun buyback program.
Charles Hill, principal of Strobridge Elementary School in California, organized the “Safety Day” event and offers students books and a chance to win one of four new bikes as incentives to bring in their water guns and other toys he said make it “easier for them to use a real gun.”
Gun rights advocate Yih-Chau Chang of Responsible Citizens of California is a vocal critic of the program, suggesting its mission is misguided.
Calling it a “normal part of growing up,” he explained children have long played imaginative games involving guns and other weapons.
Despite his good intentions, Chang said Hill’s program “doesn’t really educate children about guns or gun safety,” citing the fact firearms are “more often used in defensive ways which prevent violent crime from occurring in the first place.”
Hill also expressed concern that “one of our sixth-graders wanting to fake someone out at a 7-Eleven” would be shot by someone mistaking a toy gun for the real thing.
Of course, Chang responded with the fact that toymakers are “forced to paint guns in bright colors … that make it virtually impossible for an officer to mistake it for a real gun.”
Still, Hill stands by his controversial mission, saying “we need to start early,” apparently through compulsory indoctrination, to assure “older kids” do “not think guns are cool.”
The demonization of guns and their owners is boilerplate rhetoric on the left. Reaching an increasingly younger audience merely creates an increased likelihood the next generation will embrace this misguided worldview.
