Jimmy Fallon+Seth Myers=Late Night Saturday Night Live (SNL)

When Jimmy Fallon took over for Jay Leno on the Tonight Show I decided to see how he does because replacing a giant like Jay Leno is surely a task worth fighting  for. Jimmy is a talented guy and can be very funny. He was originally a cast member and writer for Saturday Night Live from 1998-2004. He’s 40 years old this September and has been in 9 movies from 2000 to 2009 mostly which are forgettable. He’s been the recipient  of numerous TV awards and nominations and hosted SNL many times. He had his own show called Late Night with Jimmy Fallon from 2009-2014. Jimmy can be very funny and is excellent at impersonations of famous people.

The new producers of the new Tonight Show said Jimmy’s show would be less political in humor and guests than Leno was, so what do they do? They book the biggest political guest Michelle Obama on last Monday’s show. She did a bit with Fallon and comedian/actor Will Farrell who I think is really funny called their “EW moment” or something like that. Fallon and Farrell dressed up as two teen-age girls who said “Ewww” a lot as they interacted with Michelle. I thought this skit was very juvenile, silly and lame. Later Jimmy interviewed Michelle and it was here she called young people who didn’t sign up for Obamacare “Knuckleheads” which I thought was highly insulting. If I was a young millenial I would be so put off to her by that remark.

I tried giving Jimmy another chance so I watched him the next night. I thought his opening monologue was terrible and he seemed nervous for someone so used to being in front of live audiences and had to re-emphasize his jokes throughout, yet the audience roared in approval. He seemed to be appealing to a lower class of people than Leno did and maybe that’s the idea. I guess they want to appeal to a younger demographic.

Jimmy seemed better at interviewing and interacting with his guests like Paul Rudd and Shaquille O’Neil than stand-up. On Wednesday night Jimmy has comedian Adam Sandler on who I have mixed reactions to from being really funny to very obnoxious. Sandler was also a regular on SNL.

In 2007 Jimmy married producer Nancy Juvonen and they have a daughter born in 2013 via surrogacy.

Following Jimmy’s Show is Seth Myers who also was a writer for and cast member from SNL. Seth Adam Meyers (born December 28, 1973)[4] is an American actorvoice actorscreenwriterproducertelevision host and comedian. He is a former head writer for NBC‘s Saturday Night Live and hosted its news parody segmentWeekend Update. Meyers currently hosts the talk show Late Night with Seth Meyers, which premiered on Monday February 24, 2014, on NBC.  On Monday’s show Seth had Amy Poehler on from the new show Parks and Recreation as well as VP Joe Biden.  Poehler was also a member of SNL and known for her impersonation of Hillary Clinton. I wasn’t really familiar with Seth Myers, but found him to be very lackluster and boring and just blah in his appearance and monologue. His guitarist in his band struck me as being a nerdy, deadpan sidekick complete with horn rimmed nerdy glasses. Late Night With Seth Meyers” will need several weeks before it lands on its own particular brand of strangeness and attitude, if viewers will wait around that long. Obviously Myers appeals to the same demographic as Fallon. I can’t see either of these shows lasting, but time will tell.

The big question is why would NBC fire someone like Jay Leno who was at the top of his career bringing in the biggest ratings NBC ever had not only once but twice? Sean Hannity thinks it was because they want to make NBC and the Tonight Show a safe haven for liberals since Jay was more conservative and partisan. Another comment I saw from a reader said something interesting also. He said that the mid-term elections are coming up and they want someone influential towards more liberal candidates such as Fallon and Myers whereas Jay was influential towards conservatives. We shall see what the future brings.

In the meantime I found this interesting comment from a viewer that sums it up.: Seth Meyers was just ho-hum, ok, and will continue to be just a mediocre funnyman. Seth Meyers is also an obvious beneficiary of Lorne Michaels’. If it weren’t for majordomo Michaels, the two, former SNL “Weekend Update” hosts/co-hosts (Messrs. Fallon & Meyers) would not have just happened to roll their dice and got (extremely) lucky as they did. No mind-blowing, uproariously funny new comedy on NBC btwn. 11:35p-1:35a. Just recycled mess from Fallon & Meyers, Inc.’s halcyon days over the past 2 decades at a similar workplace (Rockerfeller Center, NBC, SNL) in NY.
