Tattoo Wars: Can a Waiting Period Prevent Stupidity?

Maybe DC bureaucrats can add mandatory spell check to the 24–hour tattoo waiting period.

Maybe DC bureaucrats can add mandatory spell check to the 24–hour tattoo waiting period.

District of Columbia leftists have been so generous in providing ideas for negative columns; it’s only fair to compliment them when they do something positive. Currently the District of Columbia Health Department is proposing a mandatory 24–hour waiting period before getting a tattoo. I think making prospective tattoo customers pass a Breathalyzer and recite the alphabet backward would be a good idea, too, since it combines a sobriety and I.Q. test.

As gratifying as this waiting period is, it’s still mystifying. Why draw the line here? The extent of cultural decay that gets a pass in the District is breathtaking, so what makes getting a tattoo worthy of regulation?

It’s true that throughout history tattoos have been associated with less desirable elements including pirates, cannibals, the SS and neo–Nazis, but guilt by association is never an issue in DC. You have only to count the number of politicians at the various alternative lifestyle ‘pride’ parades to know that.

Trendies use a tattoo to declare themselves ‘edgy’ without the accompanying inconvenience of joining a para–military organization or abandoning their vegan diet.

Still, just the mention of a waiting period was enough to motivate the Washington Post to interview those opposed.

Paul Roe, who owns a tattoo parlor, is quoted as saying, “It’s honestly ridiculous. Why not 24 hours’ waiting time before shaving your head?” (This points out the danger of the uncreative mind attempting to construct a metaphor on the fly. Unless Roe is using henna tattoos his marks are permanent, whereas even the worst haircut eventually grows out.)

Roe’s trump card against any new rules is two words: Breaking bad. “Simple regulation is effective regulation,” he said. “Overregulation will kill the profession and drive it underground and make it less safe for everybody.” Evidently the tattoo industry is as fundamentally lawless as meth dealers and abortionists. At the first hint of government oversight everyone threatens to head for the nearest alley and bring out the coat hangers.

Actually I’m not a total anti–tattoo fanatic. I can see the need for a medicinal tattoo on Alzheimer’s patients (name, address, phone number, next of kin and the GPS coordinates of the assisted–living home) for those awkward times when grandpa is found wandering in the median wearing grandma’s pajamas.

My view of ‘decorative’ tattoos is the same as my wife’s. She believes getting a tattoo is like wearing the same tee–shirt every day for the rest of your life.

Marcela Onyango told the WaPost that she had been pondering getting her late mother’s birth year — 1961 — etched on her rib cage for the last three years. Naturally, she thinks waiting an additional 24 hours constitutes an outrage. Although she might wish she’d delayed even longer if a future armed robber mistakes those four digits for her PIN number.

William O’Sullivan contributed an opinion piece where we learn that in the tattoo subculture “there seems to be an unspoken code not to talk about them [tattoos].” Another bizarre case of flaunting something in public you don’t want people to notice.

It’s like the time I was walking through a casino and a woman passed by who was featuring her pulchritude in an outfit with a plunging neckline.

Since I’m weak and a sinner, my attention was irresistibly drawn to that canyon. Simultaneously, my wife poked me in the ribs and the woman’s companion gave me a hostile look. “Hey,” I protested in defense, “if you don’t want people to look at the merchandise, keep it out of the display case!”

While Virginia only regulates tattoos for those under 18, the DC waiting period will apply to everyone regardless of age. And about time, too, since it looks like AARP may soon be offering a tattoo discount.

Darlene Nash, a 57–year–old grandmother, told the WaPost her tattoos are for a dead sister, two granddaughters, her mother and friends who died of cancer. This epidermal notice board is located on her shoulder blades so everyone behind her on the ladder to the water slide can pause and consider mortality.

Evidently there is a lot of commemoration going on. In the same article the owner of Maryland tattoo parlor says older customers “often want to commemorate a milestone, such as the death of a spouse, the birth of a grandchild, a marriage or a divorce.” Looking at it that way, the ink saves time and gas in the long run, because you won’t feel guilty for not visiting mom at the cemetery; and it lasts a lot longer than a mylar birthday balloon.

The Posties also discovered Myrna Armstrong, a tattoo culture professor who has comforting news for older hipsters. She says since the over–55 set already has saggy skin there’s no need to worry about the tattoo wilting. It’s like buying a pre–shrunk shirt. The tattoo–wanting senior just has to find an ‘artist’ skilled enough to ink on the fleshy equivalent of a grocery bag.

It could be the DC Dept. of Health is on the leading edge of a body ink backlash. The Army is considering a ban on any tattoo on the forearm, below the knee or above the neckline and it will require the removal of “offensive” tattoos.

I only wish the District would expand activities covered by a waiting period. Right now the authorities require a waiting before you can buy a gun, but it’s step–right–this–way if you want an abortion. It seems only consistent to expand the wait period to abortion, too. Because although a gun purchase may sometime result in an innocent death, an abortion purchase is designed to result in an innocent death.

The revolution will not be televised – Intellectual Froglegs S2 – Ep 11

The democrats want a blank check again to spend, and are blaming the conservatives for not being willing to compromise – also accusing them of not being fiscally responsible. Of course, liberals also think that just because ObamaCare is the law, it’s not up for being debated or changed. Joe Dan Gorman suggests the radical concept of not giving in to liberals. Now, we just have to see if the conservatives that are left in Washington take that advice. Of course, there’s also more indictments against the mainstream media.

Are They Children, or Aren’t They?

A study released last week showed that adolescence now ends at age 25. Because of these findings, child psychologists can now work with these “children” until that age. According to the study, young people were experiencing an inferiority complex as a result of pressure to leave the home by age 18 or achieve other key milestones by that age.

Psychologists have decided that there are three stages of adolescence. Early adolescence ranges from ages 12 through 14. Middle adolescence spans ages 15 through 17. Anyone aged 18 or over was classified as late adolescence.

Being the layperson that I am, phase one has a three year span, phase two has a three year span, and phase three covers eight years. Does this make sense?

Researchers feel the brain has not completed development until midway into the 20’s and, in some cases, into the 30’s. Amazing!

Psychologists suggest we should not rush kids through adolescence but rather allow them to develop over the natural course of things. Really?

So, now they are telling us we shouldn’t rush kids to make decisions, get a driver’s license, or a job or try to reach any of those traditional milestones that help strengthen our children in preparation for adulthood. Aren’t these the same psycho-babble-ists that told us in the 80’s that we shouldn’t score the games our kids played, no one wins or loses, no grades at school, everyone gets a trophy? And now we’re finding out that implementing these practices actually set our kids back and made it worse on them.

Since when was 18 years-old too young to get a job and help pay for your car or insurance? Since when was 18 or 16 or 14 too young to get a paper route?

I know some lefty is going to call me a stuck up, Bible thumping conservative that doesn’t believe in science and can’t understand the concept of cognitive brain development.

Let’s say for argument’s sake, I agree with the study. According to the study, the adolescence brain “reorganizes itself” several times during the teenage years. The new “scanner” device they have been using shows the brain actually uses different physical areas as it develops to process information and make decisions.

If this is true, why do we allow “children” who are still developing to drink at age 18 or 21. Do they have the mental capacity to make that decision rationally? Not according to this study! Why do we let them sign contracts or operate dangerous machinery? Why do we force them to go to college and amass a mountain of debt before their brain has developed?

An even bigger question goes to some social issues. Why do we allow 12 year olds to decide they want an abortion and obtain one facilitated by a stranger without their parents ever knowing? Why do we let, 7, 9, or 15 year olds decide they are gay, lesbian, or transgender? How do they make that kind of life-altering decision when their brain, according to the experts, isn’t capable of making that decision yet.

When it comes to hypocritical logic the left takes the cake. They constantly verbally beat on the conservative, Bible thumping right for not having the same respect for science that they do. However they pick and choose what they want to believe.

We need to deal with the climate change issue. Recent studies and scientists say there has been no real change in the temperature of the planet in over 40 years. That’s science!

A woman’s right to choose to terminate the fetus. What they mean is a woman’s right to kill a human. And, yes, that’s proven by science. They now say a “fetus” can survive outside the womb at 21 weeks and that all the human traits are either formed or are forming at 8 weeks. Scientific fact!

If these “kids” need to live at home longer because they don’t have the mental capacity to make adult decisions until they are 25, then how in God’s creation (or any deity you chose to insert here) do you allow “children” to decide their sexual orientation, in some cases to get a sex change or gender reassignment surgery in their early teens? It’s becoming more and more common. They don’t have the capacity to make that decision. Scientific fact!

If the progressive left want us to adhere to scientific standards, shouldn’t they have to do the same? They’re not being truthful. They are using the same information that President Obama uses when he says, “the private sector is doing well,” “it’s all Bush’s fault, “the economy is doing well,” “it’s all the Republicans fault.” Do I really need to go on?

If “children” ages 18 through 25 do not have sufficient brain development to make career decisions and live independently, how can children younger than that make life-altering decisions regarding sexual orientation and abortion?

I doubt there’s enough “science” to explain that one to me!

What:

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Whether it’s “down the rabbit hole”, or “through the looking glass”, the world of politics is often referred to in the lexicon given to us by Lewis Carroll. No matter what, those terms are resurrected when referring to something that has gone terribly wrong. And that’s what’s here on Jabberwonky…

Tonight: So, everyone’s upset about the fact that the Republicans keep pushing a continuing resolution to temporarily fund the government that Obama doesn’t like, and won’t sign. What now? Other than the obvious, that the Democrats are gearing up to blame the GOP for whatever goes wrong, what else could be in their bag of tricks? Join us tonight with guest, Meredith Ancret (@MeredithAncret), as we discuss this, and whatever else comes to mind.

Last Warning For the Trainwreck Known as Obamcare

Despite last-minute efforts, ObamaCare officially begins on Tuesday, Oct 1st. But even as open enrollment is set to start, most Americans still don’t understand what they have to do. Already, huge tax increases and fees are hitting — impacting individuals and businesses. There are more than 20,000 pages of ObamaCare rules and regulations. If you don’t know these provisions it could cost you dearly in skyrocketing insurance rates and mountains of new taxes and surcharges. Here is a partial list of only some of the changes in this train wreck you can expect:*Insurance rates are expected to skyrocket and are already doing so. People will eventually pay doctors out of pocket rather than pay the high rates. After a while with enough people doing this insurance companies will shut down and everyone will be forced to turn to the government which is what Obama wants. Obama said   people will see their insurance rates drop by $2500 instead they were rising to $7,500. Obamacare will cost each person about $100-200 a month. That’s not affordable so they will opt to pay the fine instead and pay out of pocket to doctors.

*Medicare benefits will shrink. Obama to0k 750 billion dollars out of medicare to pay for Obamacare and plans to take another 750 billion out of it. Also the baby boomers are retiring and there won’t be sufficient costs to cover them.

*The government will decide the benefits of every insurance policy.

*New Obamacare capital gains tax adds a 3.8 surcharge to certain income groups.

*There will be a new income tax on health deductions.

*New excise tax on cadillac health plans that hits employers with a 40% penalty over a certain threshold.

*Long term care for the sick won’t be covered such as nursing homes.

*If you sell your house there will be a 10% charge that will go to Obamacare to help finance it.

*Be prepared for the coming doctor shortage as doctors will be laid off to help cover costs and there will be long waits for a procedure or MRI or cat scan just like Canada and Europe and people may die.

*A fifteen member non medical panel will come between you and your doctor to decide if you should warrant a certain procedure or not. The cut-off date for a major procedure is age 70. After that you can expect minimal care like being put on a pain pill or comfort care. These are the so called “death panels” that Sarah Palin warned us about.

This came about  when at a town hall  meeting a woman told Obama that her 80 year old mother needed a heart transplant and no doctor would take her until she found one doctor who said her mother had such a yen to live he was willing to take a chance. He did and the woman said her mother lived another 15 years. Obama’s reaction was “I’d just put her on a pain pill.”

This is only part and partial of the horrors facing us in this monster known as Obamcare.

Doug Patton in his commentary on GOPUSA said it best:

In a few days, the century-long dream of every utopian-minded socialist from Woodrow Wilson to Hillary Clinton will become a reality. And when it does, those who mocked Sarah Palin for daring to tell us the truth that Obamacare will lead to health care rationing, which will lead to defacto death panels, will have reached another milestone in their march toward “equality.”

“If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan.
If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.” – Two of the biggest lies so far
in Barack Obama’s mendacity-filled presidency

On Halloween Day, 2008 — appropriately enough, since his tenure as president has been a nightmare that makes Freddy Kruger look like Santa Claus — candidate Barack Obama told the American people, “We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.” Well, guess what. He meant it.

But in an exclusive interview with Newsmax, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell insisted that Republicans weren’t fighting a lost cause to defund Obamacare as part of legislation to prevent the federal government from shutting down next week.

“I don’t think it was a waste of time,” the Kentucky Republican said. “The American people do fully understand that still, not a single Republican in the House or Senate favors this awful new law — and if they will send us enough additional new members to get rid of it, we will.”

In addition to delaying final implementation of the Affordable Care Act for a year, the House bill would repeal a tax on medical devices that helps pay for the law, said Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif.

As one responder to an article I read said “I hope every jerk that voted for this  guy in the WH faces a death panel one day.”

Cops Investigating Complaint get kicked out of a Garage Sale

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_vv3xYwwb0

state-patrolMost people are congenial when they have contact with their local police. Granted we get annoyed when we get pulled over for speeding or we see a cop parked on patrol in our neighborhoods, but most of us realize that the officers are just doing their jobs to keep our streets and neighborhoods safe.

And then there are people like this!

A recent video went viral on You Tube shows a trio of police officers responding to a local residence in the midst of a garage sale. The video shows an officer coming to investigate after hearing a report that guns are being sold at the sale. The neighborhood looks like a middle class to upscale neighborhood and there are people wandering around the tables in the driveway looking at various items for sale.

The officer comes onto the property, not unlike the customers and starts asking questions about the possibility of guns on the property for sale at the garage sale. The uncooperative couple, instead of answering the officer’s questions and setting his mind at ease, start resisting the officer, video taping him and demanding that he leave the property immediately.

Now there are some interesting facts that come out after watching the video. Apparently you are welcome on this residential property and can buy their gently used items as long as you don’t have a badge and a gun. Second, it is not illegal to have garage sales or even to sell guns at your garage sales.

Most municipalities have a process whereby residents can apply for a permit to have a garage sale. (It usually involves a small fee or tax.) Likewise states have statues regarding the sale of weapons between private persons. The video doesn’t say where it was filmed, so there is no way I can confirm what the local laws state. They vary from state to state and sometimes between municipalities. In Minnesota, a seller of long gun or hand gun can download a document to facilitate the transfer of the weapon to another private person. A call to the BCA, Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, can clear up whether or not a buyer is authorized to purchase a gun. The process is identical to that you’d expect in a gunshop, gunshow or from an authorized licensed dealer. In my state, long guns don’t require a permit to purchase, unless you are talking about the AR or AK style weapons.

Most of the time, doing a routine pre-purchase check takes 20 minutes or less. It can take as much as 5 days, so it pays to be patient. Regardless, the sale of guns between private persons is legal and there is usually a process set up to do it. I would check your local laws before you make a transfer. I would never sell a gun to someone who is out of state as it is too hard to verify his or her status. I would also never sell to anyone who did not either have a permit to purchase or to carry. A quick call to the BCA can confirm whether or not that person’s credentials to purchase are still valid. You don’t want to run into any problems or sell to someone who has a record.

Bottom line is this: we are all concerned about the apparent encroachment of government in our lives. A police state is not something any of us want. But we have laws and we have cops and it behooves us to be polite to the people who wear badges and guns. No one in this video was tazed, no one was set down on the ground, and you just have some cops on routine patrol asking questions. THAT’S THEIR JOB. The homeowner should ask himself or herself, after treating cops this way in the routine execution of their jobs, what happens when I need to call 911? Are these officers going to be very quick in answering my call? Probably not.

Police are people too and it is important that we not forget that fact. Some are good and some aren’t. I’m not convinced that these officers are bad, that they wanted to ‘raid’ the garage sale as the videographer claims. There are so many bad eggs out there willing to do people harm that the officers who enforce our laws have to be super-careful in regards to their safety and ours. It doesn’t hurt us to greet an officer with a smile and a wave. After all, we pay them to do the job that they do. Why not earn their trust when they do it? I would make things go a lot better for all of us.

As for the bad eggs in uniform, they are definitely out there. Keep the cameras warmed up for them. It isn’t illegal to tape officers doing their job, just don’t get involved yourself or interfere. The evidence you gather could lead to the firing of a bad cop and a change in how a local department does business.

The Obamacare Train Wreck

The problem with 2,400 pages of legislation is not in what politicians promise the legislation will do, but what it does in reality, including the creation of nearly 40,000 pages of regulations affecting our health care. And the reality with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), as we’re witnessing nearly daily in financial media, is devastating. And not just for the economy and the middle class (as we discussed last week) but for our healthcare system itself. When you dramatically alter the third-party payment system and place federal mandates on available health-care insurance plans, the whole health care delivery system is adversely affected. To believe otherwise is naiveté.

Obamacare_NO_01_280x271The ACA (Obamacare) was sold to us on the basis that there were 40 million Americans without health insurance and that the Act would rectify the apparent inequity. That actually is the first broken promise of Obamacare. The Congressional Budget Office  (CBO) admits that after 10 years of implementation, Obamacare “will still leave 31 million uninsured.” And we’ll have spent $1.93 trillion failing to achieve the primary objective of the Act! And that new dollar figure from the CBO is still likely an underestimate since they’ve revised the figure upward three times already.

One of the byproducts of a third-party (insurance company) payment system for health care is that the consumer or patient is considerably removed from the cost of services. The ACA increases this gap by requiring “free preventive services,” restricting deductibles, and proscribing lifetime benefit limits. Currently, over 36% of health insurance plans have higher out of pocket limits than allowed by the ACA. The Act also places new restrictions on Health Savings Accounts that have allowed 24 million Americans to be more attentive to pricing since they paid for services themselves. These provisions will remove the consumer from the cost of service even more, which has an escalating effect on healthcare costs.

“We will keep this promise to the American people. If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan. Period. No one will take it away,” we heard daily from the president while pitching his plan. This is the second major broken promise of the ACA. The new requirements imposed on employer sponsored insurance (ESI) plans will make the costs increase significantly for employers. Many employers will discontinue their plans altogether, forcing employees to the state exchanges to buy their insurance for themselves.

In June, McKinsey & Company released results of a study where they found, “Overall, 30 percent of employers will definitely or probably stop offering ESI in the years after 2014. Among employers with a high awareness of reform, this proportion increases to more than 50 percent, and upward of 60 percent will pursue some alternative to traditional ESI.” This contrasts sharply with CBO estimates of 7% of employees losing their current ESI, and the president’s promise that none would.

Those who will be able to retain their current plan will see significant changes. According to the National Business Group on Health, 30% of all companies with ESIs are considering dropping coverage for retirees and over 50% are considering dropping spousal coverage. And it’s not just the private sector, as local governments are looking at the same solutions. The mayor of Chicago, Obama’s former Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, is planning to drop 30,000 city retirees off of the city’s ESI and push them into the exchanges to buy their own. He projects a savings of $108 million per year.

Promoting the passage of his signature legislation, President Obama vowed, “that my plan will reduce the cost of health insurance by $2,500 for average families.”  But according to Investor’s Business Daily, since Obamacare passed, the cost of an average family policy has already increased by $3,000, mostly in anticipation of the new regulations and mandates imposed on providers and insurers.

All the new regulatory requirements are going to cause health insurance premiums to soar even more, especially for younger and healthier individuals. After all, the government subsidies will pay for the added expense of covering preexisting conditions, which was forced by the ACA. Holtz-Eakins’ American Action Forum analyzed insurance premiums in five major cities, and calculated that Obamacare mandates will cause premiums to rise additionally an average of 169%.

The National Center for Policy Analysis warns that seniors may be the most hard hit with service quality, and quantity issues. NCPA President John Goodman correctly observed that almost half of Obamacare is paid for over the next decade by draining $716 billion out of Medicare.

Confirming the fears of many who actually read the bill, Howard Dean, a doctor and former DNC Chairman, wrote recently in the Wall Street Journal, “One major problem [with Obamacare] is the so-called Independent Payment Advisory Board. The IPAB is essentially a health-care rationing body. By setting doctor reimbursement rates for Medicare and determining which procedures and drugs will be covered and at what price, the IPAB will be able to stop certain treatments its members do not favor by simply setting rates to levels where no doctor or hospital will perform them.” This obviously was what the president was referring to when he said “Give them a pill instead of the surgery.”

This barely scratches the surface of the myriad of problems created by the ACA. To my count, there are dozens of such problems. Ted Cruz was right to dominate the news cycle for 21 hours in an attempt to prevent this “train wreck” to the economy and our health care. The ACA is clearly the wrong prescription for our healthcare ailments, and won’t even accomplish what it was promised to do.

You really ought to go home! Navy Pilot Intercepts Iranian Over International Waters.

Jeremy_F4

The Author with an F4 Phantom II at Fort Snelling MN. The F4 was the workhorse of the US military and is currently in use in the Iranian Air Force.

“You really ought to go home!” were the words of warning from an American F-22 pilot, likely a Navy pilot, to an Iranian Air Force pilot this past March. The F-22 intercepted the F-4 Phantom II aircraft over international waters over the Gulf after the Iranian pilot attempted to engage a US drone there.

The Washington Times carried the story this week and PJTV’s Bill Whittle has excellent commentary on it on his hit podcast “Afterburner”. I invite everyone to look at both of these. I also wanted to pile in and comment on this story.

My brother first brought my attention to this story. He’s a retired Army Major and served as a space officer in Afghanistan. Here’s the story. The Iranians have been aggressively testing their limits in the region attempting to establish themselves as the dominant power in the Middle East. With the fall of their nemesis, Iraq, Iran feels a power gap in the region and is willing to fill the void. You may remember that Iran and Iraq were engaged in an 11-year civil war, a conflict that was costly in blood and material on both sides and ended in stalemate.

Since then Iran has been in a proxy war with us. As Mr. Whittle points out, most of the IED’s, improvised explosive devices have been manufactured by Iranian Quds Force agents operating in Iraq and have been used to target our American Servicemembers there, to costly effect. The Iranian military would love to further embarrass us and damage our credibility in the region, which is why they attack our drones from time to time.

In February of 2012 they attacked a drone and downed it, capturing the vehicle. They made another attempt in March, but it didn’t go as planned. Instead, as they were lining up a shot with their internal machine guns, the pilot, unawares, was intercepted by the best stealth fighter in the world, the F-22 Raptor. He literally didn’t see it coming. The US pilot lined up beneath the F-4 to check it’s payload, to ascertain the weapons it was carrying. Then it nonchalantly rolled out to the wingtip of the other aircraft and that is when the US Navy pilot got the Iranian’s attention. The US pilot flipped to the Iranian frequency and warned him in English, the international language of aviation that, “You really ought to go home!” The Iranian complied, tail tucked down between his legs, intimidated by the superior technology of the opponent aircraft and in awe of the sheer skill and aplomb of its pilot.

Now Bill makes some eloquent points on why this incident is significant and I’ll let him explain what those are. I would like to add a few more.

Sure, the F22 is a special aircraft, there is none like it and they are in short supply, thanks to the Obama administration’s canceling of their manufacture. That matters, but there is something else that matters more. Our political leaders lack in the vision and strength to meet the threats out there and it shows, but our men and women in the military are not lacking in that regard. They have it in spades and as long as we have them, the US is in good hands. What they need to succeed is a real leader in the White House, not the little girly man we have now that rides a little girl’s bike. We were blessed with that kind of leadership when Ronald Reagan occupied the office and for the most part the Bush family kept up appearances. We were lucky to have George W. for the beginning of this new cold war with radical Islam.

But, we are backsliding now and the world can feel our lack of leadership. Russia is stepping up and Obama is being easily outmaneuvered by the skill and political savvy of Vladimir Putin.  The influence of Russia, which supports regimes like Iran and Syria, is growing, while the influence of the US is unfortunately shrinking.

While we are distracted by the healthcare debate and the economy and jobs, let us remember that we still have real men and women in uniform out there who are holding back the hordes of tyranny all around the world. They need our thoughts; our prayers and they deserve better leadership. They deserve the best training and the best equipment, items like the F22. Next time around, I hope we can pick a leader who is worthy of them.

$300 Million for Detroit: Arbitrary Sequestration Continues

Sequestration
It seems that there is some $300 million in the federal budget for the bankrupt city of Detroit, despite what Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said. But there are no funds to conduct White House tours. Or to continue National Park services.

By cutting out White House tours, the Secret Service is saving $18,000 per week. If the money for Detroit was spent instead on tours, there would be 16,666 weeks, 320.5 years of tours that could be restored. The National Park Service endured $153.4 million in budget cuts due to sequestration, just over half what is being given to Detroit. As a result, government officials worry that these cuts will hurt towns and cities across the country, since the park system generates $30 billion in economic activity and supports 252,000 jobs.

And half of the cuts mandated by sequestration will fall upon the defense of this nation. According to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta (an Obama appointee), sequestration cuts will mean:

  • The smallest ground force since before World War II
  • The smallest Navy since before World War I
  • The smallest tactical fighter force in the history of the Air Force
  • Termination of the Joint Strike Fighter and next generation bomber
  • Delay of the next generation ballistic missile submarine, as well as cuts to our existing sub fleet
  • Cancellation of the littoral combat ship
  • Elimination of all modernization of ground combat vehicles and Army helicopters
  • Undermine our ability to meet our national security objectives
  • Generate significant operational risks and delay response time to crises, conflicts, and disasters
  • Severely limit our ability to be forward deployed
  • Severely reduce force training and threaten overall operational readiness
  • and, most importantly, undermine our ability to meet our national security objectives

What was Dear Leader Barack Hussein Obama’s response to sequestration that he proposed? He called it dumb and arbitrary, and blamed Republicans.

Perusing the OMB “Preliminary Estimates of Sequestrable and Exempt Budgetary Resources and Reduction in Sequestrable Budgetary Resources by OMB Account – FY 2013″ shows that Obama’s favorite programs, such as childhood nutrition, student aid, unemployment assistance, and renewable energy, have been largely (and arbitrarily) exempted from sequester cuts.

Obama was correct – sequestration is arbitrary. What does and doesn’t get sequestered is entirely and arbitrarily up to him. It’s interesting to note that ALL Detroit mayors since 1962 have been Democrats. It now appears as if Detroit is one of his favorite programs.

Nancy Pelosi, a political hack if ever there was one, assured us this past weekend that “The cupboard is bare. There’s no more cuts to make.” Well Nancy, I hope you are embarrassed because $300 million was “found” that could have been cut.

Presidential Proclamation — National Hunting and Fishing Day, 2013

NATIONAL HUNTING AND FISHING DAY, 2013

- – – – – – -

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

Through hunting and fishing, in traditions handed down from generation to generation, families strengthen their bonds and individuals forge connections with the great outdoors. They rise before dawn to cast a line on a misty stream or wait patiently in a stand as a forest awakes. Parents help toddlers reel in their first catch, and young hunters master the call of a wild turkey. On National Hunting and Fishing Day, we celebrate these longstanding traditions and recommit to preserving the places in which they flourish.

Working across all levels of government and alongside nonprofits, private organizations, and conservation advocates, my Administration launched the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative. This program engages Americans at the grassroots level to protect and restore our cherished lands and waters and to help reconnect all Americans, regardless of their age or background, to the outdoors. Anglers and hunters have played an integral role, living up to their legacy as some of our Nation’s strongest defenders of wild places.

In addition to its significance as a time-honored tradition, outdoor recreation supports millions of jobs. Hunting and fishing form a large part of this essential industry, bolstering tourism, strengthening America’s economy, and funding conservation through fishing licenses or duck stamps.

Today, as we reflect on the value hunting and fishing bring to our lives — from fortified family bonds to a renewed appreciation for nature — let us ensure future generations will have the same opportunity to take part in this experience.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 28, 2013, as National Hunting and Fishing Day. I call upon all Americans to observe this day with appropriate programs and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-seventh day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-eighth.

Judge Napolitano: ‘A Treaty Cannot Trump An Expressed Right In The Constitution’

YouTube Description:

On Wednesday, Secretary of State John Kerry signed the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty, designed to regulate international weapons trade. It immediately caused some, however, to worry that it could take away parts of our own Second Amendment rights.

“The fact that John Kerry signed the treaty is just symbolic,” Judge Andrew Napolitano said on Fox and Friends on Thursday. “The treaty would have no effect on the United States unless and until it’s ratified by two-thirds of the United States Senate, which is a near impossibility.”

Napolitano also added that what could be impacted by the treaty includes the ability of importers to import certain amounts of ammunition and weapons from other countries.

What it could not affect, however, is a citizen’s right to keep and bear arms.

“A treaty cannot trump an expressed right in the Constitution,” he said.

So, why all the worry? The judge explains.

Durbin Thinks the Gov’t Has Profits to Spend

In a perfect example of Progressive thinking, Sen. Dick Durbin (P-IL), has taken issue with the idea of lawmakers and congressional staff having to be subjected to the mandates of Affordable Care Act, a.k.a., Obamacare. As people like Durbin, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid throw around rhetoric like “hostage,” “extortion,” “legislative arson,” etc., they are – at the very same time – carving out incredible perks for themselves and their staffs, paid for them on the backs of the taxpayers, while creating a super-privileged class.

Since the US Supreme Court, under the direction of SCOTUS Chief Justice John Roberts, over-stepped their function in literally re-framing the
law as a tax — even as Progressive lawmakers debating the law stated without doubt that is was not a tax, it is fair to assume that this “tax” is covered by the authority of Article I, Section 8, of the US Constitution, which mandates all taxes, “… shall be uniform throughout the United States.”

Specifically:

“The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;…”

Before the rhetorically challenged chime in, an “impost” is, by definition, a “tax.” But I am getting off track on the issue of tax inequity…\

In attempting to create – or, to be more accurate, further the privilege of the elitist political class, Mr. Durbin has suggested that government be treated on an even plane at the private sector.

The Washington Times reports:

“‘If Obamacare is going to force Americans all over this country to lose their employer-provided health insurance, be forced onto the exchange with no subsidies, then the men and women who serve in this body should feel that pain exactly the same,’ said Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who on Tuesday staged a filibuster to block the chamber floor and draw attention to his fight to defund the health law.

“Sen. Richard J. Durbin (P-IL), though, said if members of Congress lost their taxpayer subsidies for health insurance, would Mr. Cruz want all workers to be stripped of support from their companies.

“‘You better think twice about this. If you want to stop the employer contribution to health insurance, that is the headline for tomorrow,’ Mr. Durbin, the second-ranking Democrat in the chamber, said.”

When Sen. “Dickie” Durbin (P-IL), took to the floor during Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX), elongated floor speech to advance this ridiculous notion, he tried to slough off the underwriting of Congress’s health insurance, making a subsidy of 72% sound like Congressmen and their staffs were shouldering some sort of burden. Then he equated it to what large corporations do for their employees.

Note to Mr. Durbin: Corporations make profits out of which they pay for the benefits they provide their employees, or at least they used to before Obamacare, which is making them abandon their employees.

The Federal Government doesn’t make a product by which to create a “profit.” Government “profits” are taxes extracted from taxpayers. So, because government doesn’t create profits they can’t use those profits to pay for your health insurance benefits, or those of your staffs.

That said, there should be no federal health insurance benefits with the advent of Obamacare. All federal – all – should be in the Obamacare exchanges; each and every federal employee – union or not, regardless of branch – should be forced onto the exchanges.

Suddenly Obamacare doesn’t sound so hot, eh, Mr. Durbin?

Worth The Effort for Several Reasons

As US Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), continues his “filibuster” of Obamacare, many in the so-called Conservative punditry have smugly dismissed the effort as futile, tunnel-visioned in their understanding of why Cruz’s actions are not only critical to the eventual repeal of Obamacare, but to the effectiveness of the Republican Party and the survival of representative government.

A cursory examination of the by-products of Sen. Cruz’s efforts not only illuminates the incredible short-sightedness of the establishment Republican apparatus – both elected and not, but advances an argument to the American people as to why they should question the Conservative punditry and re-evaluate just how bright the Republican “strategists” actually are.

FOX News reports:

“‘Obamacare isn’t working,’ [Sen. Ted Cruz] said. ‘There are politicians in this body who are not listening to the people.’

“The feisty senator spoke through the night. His topics ranged from the American revolution and the Washington establishment to his Cuban-born father and the impact of the healthcare law. By 6am EDT Wednesday, Cruz and his fellow GOP conservatives had spoken for more than 15-and-a-half hours, the sixth longest since precise record-keeping began in 1900…

“The speech was reminiscent of Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), earlier this year staging an old-fashioned filibuster to voice his concerns over drones.

“Paul joined Cruz on the Senate floor for a time, telling his colleague to make sure he is wearing comfortable shoes for the long night ahead and saying “we’re asking for a dialogue” on Obamacare.

“‘How do we get the dialogue unless somebody’s willing to stand up and say enough’s enough?’ Paul asked.”

Before the brilliance of what Mr. Cruz is doing is outlined, it should be noted that each and every Republican who has run for office since the passage of the ACA (Obamacare) has run on a platform of “defund, repeal and replace.” And while the House has consistently passed bills aimed at repealing Obamacare, none – none – of these efforts could possibly have been taken seriously. Ergo, establishment Republicans have done nothing – nothing – to keep their campaign promises. Conversely, Mr. Cruz and his brethren are keeping their promises; Mr. Cruz and his brethren are actually executing representative government.

Now, three (if not more) by-products come of Mr. Cruz’s efforts.

First, Conservatives have identifieddefinitively – who the RINOs are in the GOP. This will allow true Conservatives to target them in the midterm elections, as well as future elections. Frankly, the day of the RINO looks like it is coming to an end.

Second, this show of dedication to campaign promise and principle has served to foment an expectation among the voters that anything less than a one-year delay of the implementation of the ACA is completely unacceptable to the American people. To wit, even Democrats are now talking about delaying the implementation and re-working the law to codify “agreeable” elements, i.e. covering pre-existing conditions and portability, to name two.

And third, it breaches the “concrete wall” establishment Republicans have erected around the “official message” of the National GOP. By Cruz, Lee and the Senate Conservative Fund taking their message directly to the people, circumventing an impotent and ineffective Republican leadership, they have started the long journey to breaking the Progressives lock on “the narrative.”

The last point, if not all three, makes what Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Jeff Sessions, Pat Roberts, David Vitter, James Inhofe and Mike Enzi worth the effort…very much so.
