Group likens soda to “bioweapon”

The Center for Science in the Public Interest has made ludicrous claims in the past and consistently seeks legislative action to limit the food choices of supposedly free citizens.
The agency recently joined other radical progressives by setting its sights on soda and piling on even more hyperbolic rhetoric aimed at irreparably tarnishing the entire segment of the beverage market.
Calling out “Coke, Pepsi, and other sugar-based drinks,” a CSPI executive claimed such drinks are “unfit for regular human consumption” in a press release.
Going further, the spokesperson said soda represents the equivalent of “a slow-acting but ruthlessly efficient bioweapon” and called on the Food and Drug Administration to “require the beverage industry to re-engineer their sugary products over several years, making them safer for people to consume, and less conducive to disease.”
While it is true that sugary drinks are unhealthy when overused, the same can be said for countless other products not disparaged by the CSPI and other leftist watchdog groups.
As with tobacco, these groups seek to completely discredit industries with which they disagree by relentlessly harping on their negative attributes.
When consumed in moderation, soda can be a perfectly acceptable addition to an overall healthy lifestyle.
The CSPI is merely doing what it does best: isolating a target and using extreme language to tear it down.
As long as a company is honest about a product it provides, which by all accounts the soda industry has, it should be up to each American citizen to decide what is best for his or her own body.
