When Did Everything Become A Right In This Country?

I was watching T.V. the other day, when a story came up about Obama-Care, on the screen was a liberal saying, “at least, health care is now a right.” As I sat there I said to myself, Just what we need another right in this country, I mean really, it seems everything is a right these days. This society is rights crazy. We are drunk with rights. Everything is a person’s right. There is no such thing as common sense anymore. Because now-a-day it doesn’t matter if somebody does something wrong, because it’s their right to do it. It is a teachers right to teach our young kids to put a condom on a cucumber at school. However, does it make sense?  It is a school’s right to give 13 and 14 year old girls birth control pills. But does it make sense? If a child has a headache at school they are not allowed to give them an aspirin. But here’s a birth control pill, go have fun. Make sense? Our children can’t pray or pledge allegiance to our flag.   Make sense?

There is no doubt about it; we are living in an entitlement society. So many people in this country feel they are entitled to everything in life. Somehow, entitlements and rights became the same thing. Moreover, we can thank the liberals for that too.  It goes back to the ‘cradle to grave’ mentality. When you are born, no one owes you a damn thing. No one owes you a house, a job, a bank account, or a successful life. You want those things? Go get ‘em. If you are not happy with your life, it is up to you to change it.  The Declaration Of Independence guarantees us the pursuit of happiness. The key word is PURSUIT.  That means get off your ass and go for it.  Not sit on your ass and have it handed to you. All too many children are brought up today thinking that the world owes them a happy successful life, boy are they in for a big surprise.

The government must protect us from enemies, foreign and domestic. Everything else is open for discussion. We need to go back to a time when most things were considered a privilege, not a right. If we can get our society back on a privilege mentality, instead of a rights mentality, the country would be a lot better off.  All we need to do is to look at other countries around the world, countries like China, North Korea, Cuba, Iran, and look at the differences. I bet the things that we call rights in this country, would be considered privileges in those countries. We take too much for granted in this country. The people in those countries consider something as simple as the first amendment a privilege, where we consider the first amendment a right.

Like millions of other immigrants, my grandfather came to this country in the early 1900’s.  He came for a better life, and never asked for a handout. Moreover, more importantly, he did not expect one.  I remember him telling me that we have a right to breathe as free men. This is the only right that God handed down. Everything else is a privilege. A job, bank account, house, car, health care, school, are just some of the privileges we enjoy in this country. Unfortunately, too many in this country consider them rights, things that are owed to us. Moreover, that is the sad part, because society is paying the price for all these self-appointed rights.
