Entrepreneurship Not Government, Can Save Our Country

America woke up on November 7th to find a transformed country, but that is what Obama promised anyway, so why were we surprised. We are now a big Government country; it seems America has chosen to have big Government in charge of our lives, boy how America has changed. We are a far cry from where we started, history has proven time and time again that big Government suffocates, not grows an economy.

I have always been fascinated and intrigued by history as well entrepreneurship, so when the History Channel had a series called The Men Who Built America, you could not keep me away. As I watched the series, I could not help but realize that there was one thing missing from the equation, and that missing part of how these men became rich and successful was Government, that’s right Government.

It seems that these men became rich and successful and this country grew and became a powerhouse without the interference of Government. But how can that be, when we have a society today that believes that we would all perish without Government in our lives. A month ago, I would not have believed that, but after this past election, it is obvious that the people of this country think that Government is the answer, instead of the individual being responsible for their own lives. It seems that the Democrats plan of making people dependent on Government, so that they will always vote Democratic is working. It’s a shame.

The more I watched, the more I was amazed at how much these men accomplished by themselves, without one ounce of help from the Government, and yes Obama, they did truly build that. Men like Andrew Carnegie, big steel man, when he needed a bridge to cross a river so he could sell his goods and grow his business, he did not run to the Government, he rounded up investors, raised the money himself in order to build that bridge, no Government help. Yes Obama, he did build that.

After Cornelius Vanderbilt built a ferryboat empire, and realized that railroads were the next big boom, did he run to the Government for help? No, he built all the railway stations himself, as well as laying the entire track throughout the country with investor money. That included all the roads, bridges as well as the tracks; Government never came into the picture. In addition, during a rough period in his life, when he was faced with losing everything, did he run to the Government for a bailout? No, with his own ingenuity and determination, he managed to pull himself back to prosperity.

Moreover, during the financial meltdown of 1907, who saved the country from falling into a deep depression? J.P. Morgan. As a matter of fact, the panic might have deepened if not for the intervention of financier J. P. Morgan, who pledged large sums of his own money, and convinced other New York bankers to do the same, to shore up the banking system. How about that, the Government came running to the private sector for a bailout. During the recent financial meltdown of our own, people were screaming that the Government had to do something, so they did, with taxpayer money, now we are all on the hook for it. As I was watching this, I found myself thinking why the hell do we need Government, these men built this country without Governments help, then I realized that America, the America of rugged individualism and independent thinkers is no more, now Government is the only answer.

There are those in this country, well, it seems most in this country, want Government to not only run everything, but also take care of our every wants in life. I find it very sad where we find ourselves as a country and as a people. After this past election, I had to face the fact that we are no longer a center-right nation; it seems the people of this country decided that big Government is the way to go.

Calvin Coolidge, our 30th President said, “The business of America is business.” He was so right, without business how would this country survive. It is businesses that pay the taxes, create jobs so people can live, why without the private sector creating jobs and wealth in this country, we would cease to have a country.  I think America woke-up on the wrong side of the bed this past Election Day.
