“America is a christian nation!”
We hear this repeatedly from the evangelical crowd in this country, but is it true?
Never has been.
Never will be.
And where do I turn to for evidence in this case? The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, the words of the men who crafted those two documents….. and The Bible.
The Declaration of Independence was sent to King George III by the Americans. The document stated that “ Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed”. Basically reinforcing that the power of the government is derived solely by the governed – AKA The People.
This is the opposite of both the English monarchy, and The Bible.
In England, King George III’s official style, or title, was: ”George the Third, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith.” Thus, the king was ordained, and derived his power by the “Grace of God”, and was so ordered to defend faith in god.
The bible states the following:
Romans 13:1-2: “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but from God; the powers that be are ordained by God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God, and those who resist shall receive for themselves damnation.“
1 Peter 2:13: “Place yourselves under the authority of human governments to please the Lord. Obey the emperor. He holds the highest position of authority.“
The bible is in agreement with the English Monarchy that the king, or emperor, is the highest authority, and one must obey to please god.
However, the Founders of this nation were directly resisting God by resisting King George III. The Founders directly disobeyed the bible by saying that “Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed“, whereas the bible stated that “there is no power but from god”.
According to 1 Peter 2:13, all people must submit to government to please god. However, if America was a Christian nation, it would have been impossible for an American Revolution to occur, because this would have been in direct violation of the bible – or the word of god.
Is that not enough to make you believe that America is not, and never has been a “Christian Nation”?
How about the words of those who founded this nation? Mostly Republicans and Pseudoconservatives use rhetoric that holds these men in the highest regard, but do they actually listen to the words of the Founders?
“Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity.” -Thomas Jefferson-
“I almost shudder at the thought of alluding to the most fatal example of the abuses of grief which the history of mankind has preserved–the Cross. Consider what calamities that engine of grief has produced!” -John Adams-
“I have found Christian dogma unintelligible. Early in life I absented myself from Christian assemblies.” -Benjamin Franklin-
“To give opinions unsupported by reasons might appear dogmatical.” -George Washington”
“My opinion is that there would never have been an infidel, if there had never been a priest. The artificial structures they have built on the purest of all moral systems, for the purpose of deriving from it pence and power, revolts those who think for themselves, and who read in that system only what is really there.” -Thomas Jefferson-
“Lighthouses are more helpful than churches.” -Benjamin Franklin-
Is this still not enough to convince you?
Then let’s look at “The Law Of The Land”.
The United States Constitution states the following:
Article VI, clause 2 states: “This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land”
Therefore, it is undeniable that The Constitution, and all treaties made, are the Supreme Law Of The Land.
Now that we have established what comprises the “Law Of The Land”, let’s look at a treaty drafted under George Washington, and signed under John Adams: The Treaty Of Tripoli.
Article 11 of The Treaty Of Tripoli reads as follows:
Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,—as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen [Muslims],—and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan [Muslim] nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.
This treaty was unanimously ratified by the US Senate on June 7th, 1797, and signed by President John Adams – and became “Law Of The Land” – on June 10th, 1797.
Thus, The Laws Of The Land of the United States Of America explicitly states that the United States Of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion. Therefore, not a Christian Nation.
I cannot deny nor argue against the fact that a great majority of Americans observe or believe in the Christian faith – but the faith of the majority does not determine the faith of the entire nation. If you believe otherwise, then ALL Germans in 1930′s and 40′s Germany were Nazis. Sounds silly doesn’t it? So does declaring America a “Christian Nation” based on the majority of Americans being Christians.
I can, however, argue my opinion that The Bible, The Declaration of Independence, The US Constitution, and The Treaty Of Tripoli undoubtedly declare, and prove, that the United States Of America is not a Christian Nation.
