People are really underestimating Barack Obama and the need to get the zombified middle to vote against him. Romney polls better among moderates - that is a matter of fact and not opinion - and there is no need to ramp up gains among a base that will already walk across broken glass to vote against Obama. It is my sincere belief that the particular more conservative candidates still in the race actually endanger Republicans' chances in key battleground states and even in the House and Senate races. I am not a big fan of wishful thinking, and my desire to see someone like Gingrich in the White House does not overwhelm my rational calculus, which overwhelmingly concludes that it would be extremely risky to nominate him or Santorum or Paul. Obama has to go by whatever means possible, as long as the guy replacing him can be pressured and reasoned with.

We should be excited and thrilled. Here is a man with good character (in political circles that can be a rarity), he is smart as can be and understands how things are done, and most of all, will try, to the best of his ability, to get us out of this mess. And the most important thing of all is this: this man loves America and is willing to work hard to save her! So be thankful, we have a man who could possibly wind up being a really great president!

No. No. No.

Nope. Not doing it.

Romney doesn't have 1,144 delegates yet, and I'm going to push for a brokered convention for all I'm worth.

I want Newt or a true conservative, or I'm going to raise real hell in the Republican Party.

I have no relish for you chickens who are giving up before the game is over. It's halftime. Fight on.

You make some good points, and I will hold my nose and vote for Willard Romney in the general, much as I voted for McCain. I would have passionately campaigned and supported Newt (I am old enough to remember that time as well) who got railroaded by William Jefferson Clinton, the media (hence the vitriol), and his spineless colleagues in Congress. Perry would have been my second choice, and then, God help me, Paul, and Mitt with Santorum coming in last.

Money talks though, and it appears that Mitt is what we have. If Paul Ryan would have run (and yes I am well aware of his problems with Gingrich), there would have been no need for all of this, and a smart, articulate candidate with ideas would be our next president. Oh, well!

Amazingly well written and well articulated.

I think virtually all conservatives agree with you--we'll get behind a wilted piece of celery if it is opposing Obama.

This primary (and the lack of universal support for any of the moderates who are left in the field) is a good thing. It demonstrates to the establishment GOP that we won't stand for more of the same--that we've learned from the embarrassment we suffered at the hands of the moderates Bush 1, 2, and McCain. The primaries haven't been kind to moderates, and hopefully this time the Republican party will realize that its base is made up of conservatives.

I followed the same path as you (minus Newt, because I remembered his disorganized failure as Speaker since I am way older than you-ha!).

I am very sorry Perry wasn't a good campaigner. It would have been better for him to have stuck with his original refusal to run and wait a few more years. I am still sorry we won't have a candidate who packs a pistol and shot a coyote!

Look at it this way: With Romney, you won't be constantly disappointed. You will be pleasantly surprised when he does some conservative things. And he won't embarrass us by giving the Queen an iPod of his speeches!
