What you would be much more appauled to learn is that the government doesn’t pay for these phones. Every person who has a cell phone, (I’m honestly not certain about land lines), pays an additional fee on their monthly bill that pays for these phones. People were in an uproar about the ‘government phones’, and the White House was quick to adamently deny that the government was paying for them. If you research carefully, you’ll find that to be absolutely true. It is we, the taxpayers who are footing the bill.
Leslie, I challenge you to think outside of the box a bit.
I notice that you said “It is we, the taxpayers who are footing the bill.” So it is my assumption that you are a taxpayer, not someone looking for a handout. So when you “see” me “yelling” below, it’s not a personal attack… it’s to stress my point that YES, the GOVERNMENT IS paying for this. It’s all a matter of how you look at WHO is the government.
You are ABSOLUTELY right! It IS WE THE TAXPAYERS who are footing the bill- not only for the cell phones, but for other entitlements such as government housing, food stamps, medicaid, etc. Now, Medicare and Social Security are actually PAID INTO over the years, I believe that the government has just misused these funds over the years and this is one of the main reasons those two programs are in the trouble they are in.
However, for the other entitlements such as the ones I listed above, and the cell phones as well, these are AL STRICTLY PAID FOR BY THE TAX PAYERS!
The FUND for this program- set up by the FCC (FEDERAL Communications Commission)- see, notice that the F in FCC stands for FEDERAL-which is our United States GOVERNMENT- hence, the GOVERNMENT, FUNDED BY TAX-PAYERS- is footing the bill for this WELFARE ENTITLEMENT!

the amount paid out is rising more and more every year. Where, oh WHERE do these funds come from? Ahhhh yes….. WE TAX PAYERS who TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for ourselves! We do not EXPECT the GOVERNMENT to take care of us, NOR do we feel we are ENTITLED to a cell phone or anything else for that matter. WE BELIEVE WE MUST ALL WORK FOR WHAT WE HAVE!
WE- THE TAXPAYERS- ARE the government! We just don’t act like it these days, because we have allowed the politicians to take over things. And now we are paying the consequences.
